1 2013 The Candidate Filing Period for DeSoto s Municipal Election Begins January 30, 2013 We are already gearing up for the May 11, 2013 General Election, for which, three positions will be on the ballot as follows: Mayor Place 1 Councilmember Place 3 Councilmember Place 5 For more information on the upcoming election, visit our website at For persons interested in becoming a candidate for any of these positions, you may request a Candidate Guide in person at the City Secretary s Office located in City Hall at 211 E. Pleasant Run Road or by calling Applications for a position on the ballot will be accepted beginning January 30, 2013 until March 1, 2013 at 5 pm. All members of the City Council run by place but are elected at large. This means that they must reside in the district for which they are seeking election but voters who live anywhere in DeSoto may cast ballots for that position.

6 What s New at the DeSoto Public Library? Celebrate Amelia Bedelia s Birthday at the DeSoto Public Library! Amelia Bedelia, children s author Peggy Parrish s beloved literal-minded housekeeper, turns 50 this year, and the DeSoto Public Library is throwing her a birthday party! Children ages 7-12 are invited to celebrate Amelia s big day on Tuesday, January 29 th, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This event will have games, stories, crafts and other fun surprises. Registration is required, so call the Children s Information Desk at to register. This program is free and open to the public. Valentine s Day Craft Program at the DeSoto Public Library Children ages 8 14 are invited to come to the DeSoto Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 5:30 pm 6:30 pm for a Valentine s Day craft program. Children will be creating Hanging Hearts Mobiles that can be admired in or outdoors. This fun and easy project is great to share with friends and family. This program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. DeSoto Public Library s Anime Club starts again in 2013! Children ages 7 12 are invited to join the library s Anime club to see showings of Anime TV series, do craft projects, play games, and enjoy all things Anime! Dates: Thursday Feb. 7 and Feb. 21 Thursday Mar. 7 and Mar. 21 Thursday April 4 and April 18 Thursday May 2 and May 16 The Anime Club is free and open to the public. No registration is required. 7 African American Repertory Theater Announces Fifth Season at the Corner Theatre 2013 is the fifth full year of operation for the African American Repertory Theater Company whose goal is to create opportunities for African American artists and performers and to produce quality, cross cultural theater that will enhance the values of the African American community. This organization s founders; Irma P. Hall, Regina Washington and Vince McGill, have been offering great entertainment at DeSoto s Corner Theatre since In celebration of their fifth year, AART is offering season passes for three shows in 2013 at a reduced price. If purchased separately, evening performance tickets would cost $75, but the season pass price is $60. Here s what they have planned: February 1-24 The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of your Presence at a Celebration of their First One Hundred Years, starring Irma P. Hall is a romantic comedy about the tradition of cotillion featuring a group of African American debutantes who are preparing to meet society in 1964 in Alabama. April 5-28 A Lesson Before Dying takes place in the 1940 s South when an African American man is wrongly accused of the killing of a white store owner. In this production, Ms. Hall will reprise the role she made famous in the movie version. May 24 - June 9 Fences by August Wilson is the story of a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who is now working as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and son who now wants to play professional ball. Performances are offered on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 pm at the DeSoto Corner Theatre located in DeSoto Town Center at 211 E. Pleasant Run Rd.
