3 2018 Sound Waves Music Festival Information Sound Waves is a music festival for beginning, middle and high school bands, choirs, orchestras and jazz ensembles. The festival is designed to provide a fun and positive educational learning experience for all groups. It is a rewarding first contest experience for young groups and a more challenging opportunity for experienced groups. The program features morning and early afternoon performances leaving the rest of the day free to enjoy Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City s hottest, coolest time! All Sound Waves tickets include festival admission, exclusive use of some of the park's most popular attractions (limited attraction availability), quality adjudication, a trophy for every group and a FREE return visit ticket to enjoy the full waterpark any other day during the 2018 season. This music festival is set up to be a stress-free event for the director and performers and a fun experience for all involved! Date Saturday, May 5, 2018 Festival Director Rob Foster Rob Foster has been a music educator for the last 27 years at the middle school and high school levels. He has served on the music faculties at the University of Maryland, Texas Christian University, Haskell Indian Nations University and Tennessee Tech University. He has adjudicated music festivals in New Jersey, New Mexico, Maryland, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Head Adjudicator Robert E. Foster Bob Foster served as Director of Bands at the University of Kansas for more than 30 years, then as Assistant Chairman of the Music Department at the University of Kansas. He has adjudicated bands and presented clinics throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy and Germany. A member and past president of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and National Bandmasters Association, he is recognized as one of the most respected music educators and band directors in the United States.
4 Adjudication Groups may perform for COMMENTS ONLY or for RATINGS. All groups receive written comments from our adjudication panel. Groups performing for ratings receive a rating from the judges and perform with other groups from the same age level. All groups performing for ratings are awarded trophies based on ratings received. Judges The panel of adjudicators is balanced and consists of college music faculty and well respected high school and junior high band directors from the Midwest. We encourage beginning, junior high and high school concert bands, choirs, orchestras, pep bands and jazz bands to participate in the Sound Waves Music Festival. The reputable judges provide each performing group with positive feedback and suggestions to improve your ensemble s musicianship and overall performance. Use this music festival for motivation and as a reward for your students! 2018 Band & Choir Adjudicators Ann Goodwin Clark Ann has enjoyed a twenty-five year career as a music educator and clinician. She is currently in her fourth year as Band Director in the Cameron R-1 School District where she teams to guide all aspects of the instrumental music program, grades As Director of Bands at Gallatin, Nevada and Park Hill High Schools, Ann led the programs to success in marching, jazz and concert bands. From , Ann served as Band-Vice-President for MMEA. Jim Oliver Retired from Lee s Summit High School following a career in which he developed one of Missouri s outstanding small school bands at Maysville, after which he built one of the state s great large school bands at Lee s Summit. Since his retirement he has been very active as a clinician and consultant, working with bands throughout NW Missouri and NE Kansas. Dr. Marion Roberts Dr. Roberts has served as Assistant Director of Bands at Kansas State University, Director of Bands and Music Education and later Chairperson of the Department of Music at Baker University, Assistant to the Director of Bands at The University of Kansas, twenty-eight years at Blue Valley North high school. Dr. Paul Popiel Director of Bands at the University of Kansas. Conducts the KU Wind Ensemble, directs the graduate program in wind conducting, and guides all aspects of the university band program. Dr. Popiel has lectured and performed throughout the world. His Carnegie Hall debut was heralded by the New York Times. Dr. Popiel is a member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
5 Ratings Division I - SUPERIOR Division II - EXCELLENT Division III - GOOD Awards Each group will receive written critiques of their performance. Groups performing for RATINGS receive either a SUPERIOR (Division I), EXCELLENT (Division II) or GOOD (Division III) trophy based upon their performance. Trophies are awarded at the Sound Waves Awards Ceremony following the final performance of the day. Time and location of awards ceremony is provided at the park on the day of your performance. Performing groups that are unable to attend the awards ceremony may notify Schlitterbahn Group Sales or stop by the Sound Waves Registration Area at the park entrance to arrange trophy pick-up. Unclaimed trophies may be shipped at the expense of the recipient. Accreditation The Schlitterbahn Sound Waves Music Festival is accredited by the Kansas State High School Activities Association and the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Performing groups must be in good standing to perform for ratings at our festival. Schools not accredited by their State Activities Association may still perform for comments only. Music Requirements Bands perform on a minute schedule which includes setting up, performing and exiting the stage area. Choirs perform on a 10 minute schedule which includes setting up, performing and exiting the stage area. Songs may be fun, light pop selections. Directors may choose to perform one serious contest selection, but the other must fit the criteria above. We want to hear your group perform something that is fun for the students and spectators. When you check-in with one of the Sound Waves staff members, please leave three original copies of the scores with measures numbered. If your music selections are out of print, your photocopied scores must have a letter from the publisher granting your permission to photocopy the score. The scores and adjudicator comments may be picked up at the award ceremony following the final performance of the class. Warm-Up Areas Each performing group must report to the Sound Waves Registration Area no less than 30 minutes prior to your scheduled performance time. All groups check-in at the park entrance. All groups should be dressed and ready to warm-up. Each group will have 10 minutes in the warm-up area. Schlitterbahn provides a warm-up area with limited chairs and music stands. Directors needing additional warm up equipment may want to bring it along if needed. Electricity and percussion or jazz band instruments are not provided in the warm-up area. Each ensemble will be assigned a Sound Waves assistant to escort your group to the warm-up area, performance area and back to the park entrance. Each school is responsible for transporting their own instruments and equipment to the performance drop off area.
6 Performance Area Band equipment provided includes concert bass drum, four timpani, xylophone, bells, electric piano, drum set, bass amplifier, electrical outlet with multiple plug-ins, conductor s podium, chairs and music stands. Choirs are provided a piano. Registration There are two steps in the Sound Waves registration process per performing group: 1. Submit an online registration form for each group. 2. Pay the registration fee for each group. Online Registration Form Registration is accepted via our Sound Waves Online Registration Form only. Payment of Registration Fee A $30.00 registration fee is due at time of registration for each performing group. The registration fee must be received by Schlitterbahn in order for a performance time to be reserved for each group. IMPORTANT: Once you open the online sales window, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter promo code FESTIVAL to access the registration payment page. Receipt of a completed registration form and registration fee will confirm your reservation for Sound Waves. Space is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations made online without payment are held for 10 business days only. Groups who wish to mail their registration payment should register online and mail their payment immediately to: Please Note: Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City Group Sales Department 9400 State Avenue Kansas City, KS Purchase orders are not accepted as payment. The $30.00 registration fee does not apply to your Sound Waves ticket purchase. Sound Waves Registration receipt/ticket is not valid for admission to the park. Registration fee is non-refundable. Actual performance time will be sent to confirmed groups in April.
7 Event Tickets $ tax per person, all participants must purchase a ticket in order to be eligible to compete. Please register your group for a performance time BEFORE you order Sound Waves tickets. Please use the Sound Waves Ticket Order Form below to order Sound Waves tickets. Tickets are for performers and all guests and include festival admission, exclusive use of some of the park's most popular attractions (limited attraction availability), quality adjudication, a trophy for every group and a FREE return visit ticket to enjoy the full waterpark any other day during the 2018 season. Sound Waves Ticket Orders and payments are due 10 business days prior to your performance date. Contest times are subject to change as a result of late payments. SOUND WAVES LUNCH $ tax Groups have the option to pre-purchase a specially discounted lunch. Meal is served in a reserved area and includes All-Beef Hot Dogs, Potato Chips, Cole Slaw, Relishes, Lemonade and Water. All guests must have a meal wristband to enter the meal service area. Advance reservations are required. Extra charge. If you would like other catered meal options, please call Additional Sound Waves Tickets After the initial purchase, additional tickets may be purchased at the same rate at the park entrance on the day of your visit. The contact person must be present the original Order Summary at the Guest Relations counter to purchase additional tickets at the same price. Complimentary Chaperone Admissions One complimentary Chaperone Admission is provided for every 15 prepaid Sound Waves tickets. Groups must prepay for tickets a minimum of 10 business days prior to the date of their visit to receive Sound Waves group rates AND to be eligible for complimentary Chaperone Admissions. Complimentary Chaperone Admissions are assigned per order only and not on a cumulative order basis. Bus drivers receive one complimentary admission when they present their valid CDL at the Guest Relations counter. Bus driver admissions are not distributed in advance and are only valid on the day they are assigned. No complimentary meals for complimentary chaperone or bus driver admissions. Payment All group outing ticket orders must be purchased with a single payment. We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover Card, Diner s Club, organizational checks and money orders (no personal checks, please). Refunds Unused tickets must be returned to Schlitterbahn by June 5, 2018 to be eligible for a refund. No refunds or exchanges will be made at the performance site. Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City reserves the right to be closed to the public and season pass holders for private events and capacity limitations. Proper swimwear is required. Prices, policies, schedules and attraction availability are subject to change without notice. No rain checks or refunds.
