Amongst all the other things that seem to be hand in hand with Christmas these days there is still one spectacle that seems to delight both young and old. I am referring to the manifestation of seasonal lights! For you it may be ample if you have lights in your garden or, of course within your lounge. For many there is the delight of seeing our Fine City festooned in colourful style. There is something rather special and appealing about attractive lighting displays that seem to be part of the charm of this time of the year. When I was a child I do remember we had lights on our Christmas tree. They were not very colourful and they didn t fl ash on and off they were quite simple in design and I daresay that kids today would have thought them very boring indeed. But that s all folk had in the 1950s. However, boring or not, I have a very good reason to recall those old, quite large bulbs, because inquisitive little me wondered what would happen if I connected one up to the mains supply! After a considerable amount of time fi ddling with a screwdriver and an old socket I found in the shed, I then plugged my creation into the ceiling light in my bedroom. The instantaneous result after Local History Matters A Seasonal Walk in the Footsteps of Mediaeval Monks switching the light on was a huge bang and shards of glass hitting me and all areas of my bedroom and, of course, blowing all the fuses in the pantry plus frightening my dear ol mother half to death who was suddenly plunged into festive gloom downstairs. When she burst through my bedroom door I had the audacity to say the blackout was nothing to do with me even though the ceiling light socket was still smouldering! It s probably best for everyone s sake that I generally leave electric wiring demands to a professional these days. Back to seasonal lights and perhaps an evocative display that you may not have yet enjoyed. At this time of the year with dusk falling around four pm, the exceptionally fi ne display in the ancient cloister of Norwich Cathedral should not be missed. They are not on the usual shopping route in the city so you have to go and seek them out. If you do, I m sure you will be impressed with the distinctively warm glow as seen in the picture above. Maybe you might just be tempted to believe that you can still sense the presence today of the ancient monks who fi rst experienced the atmospheres of holiness in this very special place many centuries ago. Happy Christmas and New Year. DAVID A. BERWICK 8 PLEASE QUOTE THIS MAGAZINE WHEN YOU CONTACT OUR ADVERTISERS COPY DATE DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE: 11TH JANUARY

7 First Steps on the Investment Ladder t can be scary to start Iputting your money into stocks and shares. Phil Beck looks at the benefits of taking independent financial advice. It s been a long while since interest rates on cash savings were higher than the rate of inflation. As a result we are finding that more and more people are looking to the stock market to deliver a better return on the money they want to put aside for their future needs. Investing is a serious business: there s a long list of factors to take into account and it is always a good idea to get independent advice before committing your money to any particular route. It s important to make sure that any adviser you consult is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as that will ensure firstly that the adviser has reached minimum standards of qualification and secondly that, if things go wrong, you have recourse to the Financial Ombudsman and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (in most cases). The fact is that investing in stocks, shares and investment funds does involve risk. When we use our risk warnings at the bottom of articles, it s not just to tick a box. It s absolutely imperative that anyone who takes on investments understands that although there is the potential for above-inflation gains, there is no guarantee of a positive return and that there is a danger that you could lose some or all of the money you have invested. There s a myriad of different types of investments we could recommend and as Independent Financial Advisers, we ll consider options from the whole of the market. Advising clients throughout East Anglia > Independent Financial Advisers The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. Of course you did. The Christmas stuff has been in the shops since the 1st September, the Christmas adverts have been on television for a month now and I am reliably informed that some shops have been playing Christmas music since the end of October. So, as we re deep in the Festive Season, I thought I d just put you straight on a couple of things about Christmas. Firstly, a Christmas film is a film where Christmas is integral to the plot, i.e. the film would make no sense if it wasn t happening at Christmas. It is not a film that has, probably quite cynically, been set at Christmas, but has nothing to do with Christmas, or could be set at any other Holiday. That means that the following, all of which appear in lists of the best Christmas films are NOT Christmas films you will disagree, but you are wrong: Home Alone (could be any other Holiday, or, indeed, any other time) The Holiday (no reason for it to be Christmas, other than to cash in) Die Hard (do I really need to explain?) It s A Wonderful Life (controversial, I know, but it could be any other time could be any money, not just Christmas money I will still watch it at Christmas, anyway.) Gremlins (Really?!) Trading Places (would work at any other time) Secondly, the following are the best Christmas songs. Again, the song has to be about Christmas, not just be released at Christmas, or have a Christmas video (yes, I m looking at you, Frankie Goes To Hollywood!). And again, you will disagree, but you are wrong. In order they are: 1. White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin (an emotional rollercoaster of a song not everyone celebrates Christmas in Winter) 2. Father Christmas by The Kinks (their, mostly successful, attempt at a snotty-nosed punky song) 3. Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl (borderline, perhaps, but it mentions Christmas several times) 4. Xmas Wrapping The Waitresses (witty, bouncy, Christmassy!) 5. Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade (Ok, by the time we get to Christmas we re all sick of it, but it just screams Christmas. Literally!) Anyway, even if you choose to celebrate by watching the wrong Christmas films, or listening to lesser Christmas songs, I wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a joyful New Year! 12 PLEASE QUOTE THIS MAGAZINE WHEN YOU CONTACT OUR ADVERTISERS COPY DATE DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE: 11TH JANUARY

The talks this Autumn on Philosophy for Now covered many different aspects of the modern world such as freedom of speech, sex and gender issues, mobile phones, alternative medicine, etc. The speaker, Susan Pine, explained the views of some modern philosophers and the relevant ideas of some philosophers from earlier centuries. Three or four times during each talk, she would get the class to discuss various points among themselves and then express their views, making for a lively and vocal atmosphere. Next Spring there will be a series of 10 talks entitled A Good Day for a Fight, about the American West in the 19th century. Most of us will have seen Hollywood or Spaghetti Cowboy and Indian versions of how the West was won, but the talks, given by Dr. Mark Felton, will examine the true story, revealing the exploitation, massacre, theft and ecological vandalism that is too often ignored. You will hear familiar names like Custer s Last Stand, the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Wyatt Earp and Crazy Horse, but perhaps shorn of their mythical aura. Dr. Felton has taken the title for his talks from one of the more than 20 books he has written, two of which are currently being made into Hollywood fi lms. He has also appeared on radio and television. The talks begin on Monday January 14th 2019 in the Jubilee Hall, George Lane, Loddon, where there is ample free parking. They continue until Monday 25th March, with a half-term break on February 18th. The fee for the ten talks will be 55; if you are undecided, come to the fi rst talk free of charge and pay only if you continue. Fee remissions are available for those receiving certain State benefi ts. You may speak in confi dence to the Treasurer, Elvie Herd. You may enrol at the fi rst talk on 14th January or you may enrol on line beforehand by going to WEA Eastern Region courses, quoting the title of the course in para. 2 above, and the reference number C For further information, phone (01508) or All kinds of people on bikes If I say cyclist, do you immediately think of someone young, lean and super-fi t? You d be wrong. At Bicycle Links we meet lots of people with ageand health-related issues who ride bikes. For someone with hip or back pain, a bicycle with a low step-through frame instead of a crossbar can be the answer. We can source larger bikes and dark colours so you needn t assume that step-through means ladies bikes we like to think of them as unisex. Handlebar position also makes a big difference. One of the most common adjustments we make is to change a handlebar stem for a longer one, giving a more upright riding position. We can fi t rounded handlebars with padded grips to help with arthritis in the hands. For anyone with limited strength in their legs or knees, we can advise on the most suitable e-bikes. Electric bikes are also great for those customers who are no longer able to drive a car for health reasons. If you are a large build or overweight that s no barrier either. Just fi nd a suitable bike for your size and make sure it s comfortable, and join the rest of us on two wheels. 10 Almost nothing about butternut squash! The Seed Co-operative ( cooperative.org.uk) are a community owned seed company who believe passionately in producing seeds that everyone can grow, everyone can save for the next year, and everyone can afford. All their seeds are certified organic or biodynamic. They are growing for genetic diversity which we are in danger of losing as a result of the industrialisation of agriculture and the increasing monopolisation of seed production in the hands of a few global conglomerates like Monsanto and Syngenta. They grow the seeds at their farm near Spalding and have a number of growers around the UK and in Germany. All of this is a good thing if you want your footprint on this planet to be as small as possible. I tried several of their salad varieties, summer purslane, spring onions, peas and radishes, all of which are still growing in the greenhouse. The broad beans would have been brilliant too, if they hadn t been eaten by our resident muntjac family. This brings me onto my favourite subject. You may remember that my quest to grow butternut squashes required me to be positive in the face of adversity. In the last week of September female flowers finally made a late appearance and I had numerous fruits developing. I went on holiday with a spring in my step. But by the time I returned, all of them had been neatly bitten off. You might want Seed Co-op seeds for Christmas. I want muntjac stew! BIRGIT GRIEM Lost in Translation Circus bring an Italian Christmas tradition to Norwich A taste of Italian festivities comes to Norwich this Christmas with Lost in Translation Circus spectacular The Baron in the Trees, inspired by Italo Calvini s novel of the same name. It can be seen at The Oak Circus Centre from Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th December at 6.30pm each day. The family show will feature astonishing and astounding performances from Lost in Translation performers and friends. High flying aerial stunts and amazing acrobatics mix with slapstick, poetry, live music band juggling to create a show to thrill young and old alike. Massimillano Rossetti, Director of Lost in Translation Circus said, In Italy The Baron in the Trees is one of the children s books that we always read at Christmas. It s a traditional thing to and something that I ve grown up with each year since childhood. The Baron in the Trees is a playful, romantic fable, set in the 18th century. Twelve year old Cosimo, eldest son of the Baron, climbs a tree in protest at being forced to eat snails and vows never to touch the ground again. He spends the rest of his life in the trees and as he grows up he has adventures with bandits and pirates, falls in love, and watches The Age of Enlightenment unfold beneath him. The Oak Circus Centre s Christmas Special is fast becoming a Norwich tradition. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and last year the sold out shows were filled with appreciative family audiences enjoying traditional Christmas family entertainment. Norwich based Lost in Translation are now one of the country s leading and best-loved contemporary circus companies. Their trademark warm humour combined with heart-stoppingly virtuosic skills has won them fans and admirers wherever they perform. They have toured widely throughout the UK and Europe. I like mine with a spicy dip like Seranchi Mayo. 100g fine cornmeal (the yellow stuff) 50g self-raising flour 30g cornflour (the white stuff) 15g baking powder 1 teaspoon Cajun spice ¼ - ½ teaspoon chilli powder good pinch salt 2 medium eggs 1 garlic - crushed 1/2 onion - grated 200 ml any milk 20g butter cut in to small pieces oil to fry Sift the cornmeal, flour, cornflour, BP & spices (inc. salt) all-together in a large bowl. Mix in the eggs, garlic and onion, giving it a good stir with a wooden spoon. Meanwhile bring the milk and butter to the boil set aside. Cool slightly and then whisk in to the cornmeal mix to form a smooth, thick batter. Meanwhile heat up a deep fat fryer, alternatively use a wok or frying pan with 2 inches of oil (never leave heating oil 90% of house fires are caused from frying pans!) 12 Refl exology at Inner Space Hi, my name is Lisa and I manage Sole2SoleRefl exology offering clinic sessions at Inner Space. The Neutrinos return for 20th anniversary concert Refl exology is a non-invasive, holistic therapy which is based on the principle that the body is represented in, and connected to, refl exes found in the feet. By using gentle thumb and fi nger pressure these refl exes are stimulated which can aid the body s natural healing processes, promote wellbeing and aim to balance the entire system. Refl exology can be particularly effective in treating stress-related disorders, including anxiety, insomnia, IBS, menopause symptoms - also just during those times when we are experiencing big changes and feel the need to ground and protect ourselves. Treatments can also support the management of more chronic health conditions as refl exology aims to treat the whole person, not the condition; each session is tailored to your individual needs at that time. I also offer Aromarefl ex which is a lovely way to enhance a standard Refl exology treatment. Essential oils are individually blended to provide another therapeutic level to your treatment and can also be a great pampering experience for anyone who just feels like an extra special treat! Gift Vouchers are also available great for Christmas and includes a free Aromarefl ex treatment. To fi nd out more go to or book through my website exology.co.uk In 2019 it will be twenty years since maverick Norwich art-rock pioneers The Neutrinos played their fi rst gig. To kick start the celebrations they have just announced a one-off home-town show at Norwich Arts Centre on Saturday 26 January. A Neutrinos live show is always an event, the band are renowned for their experimental approach to presentation. We don t want to give too much away at this stage said singer Karen Reilly but if you want to see every minute of Neutrinos action on the night get there early! Sal Pittman, a regular collaborator and long-term visual inspiration, will be lighting the show and often the entire room, with her stunning cinematic style projections and super-graphics. The band will be playing with the aesthetic of Norwich Arts Centre to create a central stage allowing the audience to see the musicians from all angles, possibly with satellite performance spaces around the main stage, and don t expect that support band/headliner thing said Reilly we ll be mixing it up to defy the usual conventions. Extremes of light, sound and mood create something truly memorable as the music swoops from explosively loud to deceptively soft ballads with a heart of darkness. Special guests on the night will be Norwich/ London quartet Graceland with their thoughtfully angry pop music that comes over all riff heavy whilst retaining a strongly danceable punch. The irrepressibly adventurous nature of The Neutrinos has led them to perform on boats, in complete darkness at The Sainsbury Centre, in a former horse hospital, a bus depot, a disused small animal hospital, a former Inland Revenue Offi ce and a vast furniture depository. They have made numerous festival appearances in the UK and overseas, have recorded in Berlin s legendary Funkhaus and their music has been used for underground fi lm soundtracks and throughout the feature length Channel 4 documentary The Trials of Amanda Knox. Today they are perhaps best known for their totally unique site responsive KlangHaus collaboration with Pittman. Described as the most innovative presentation of live music I ve ever seen a total game-changer by The Guardian, KlangHaus debuted in a month long run at the Edinburgh Festival. The show was subsequently re-styled for two, month long, sold out residencies at The Royal Festival Hall and for other venues around the country. VOICE PROJECT: The Sky is Full Of Light In celebration of their 10 years of song, Norwich s Voice Project Choir are presenting two very special Christmas concerts on Saturday 22 December at St Andrews Hall. Titled The Sky is Full of Light after the song written for the choir by famed jazz musician Barbara Thompson (one of the fi rst to be specially written for them), the concert will feature some of The Voice Project s favourite pieces from the past decade alongside new seasonal songs especially written for the event. They will also be joined by guest singers and musicians including saxophonist Andy Sheppard. With innovative visuals and atmospheric lighting by artist Sal Pittman, the event will be a visual as well as aural delight. Credit: Will Teather Calling all Norfolk art ists Be part of Norfolk & Norw ich Open Studios 2019 Applications are now open for artists from across Norfolk to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be celebrating its 25th year in 2019 and will run from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June. Each year hundreds of artists take part in the scheme, inviting the public into their studios to reveal how and where they work. The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2018 more than 36,000 people fl ocked to studios across Norfolk. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios enables artists to promote and sell their work directly to visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the studio. During Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018, 460 artists participated across 256 venues- along with 16 Norfolk schools. Throughout the county artists came together to create 15 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event. Ros Dixon, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios Administrator, said: It s wonderful to think that Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be in it s 25th year in It goes to show that the scheme has a timeless appeal for both artists and visitors. It s not just about buying and selling work directly from the artist, which of course is one of the appeals, but it also offers artists the chance to meet and talk with people who are interested in their work. Many artists also enjoy being able to meet and work with other artists, which for some has resulted in long-term collaborations and friendships. Being able to see artists at work in unique working spaces will continue to fascinate and appeal to people, whether the artist has been taking part in Open Studios for 25 years or whether it s their fi rst time. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year and for many, taking part is not just about selling artwork. Artists also take part in the scheme to join a wider community of artists which helps to bring their work to new and diverse audiences, opening up discussions about their practice. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk. Get YOUR Equipment quickly and efficiently Tested, Labelled and Recorded Contact Stan Smith a qualified PAT tester today! stansmithpattester@outlook.com As we conclude 2018 I am personally looking back fondly on a year in which Penguins Go Pop had a successful album launch, have been getting some good airplay, gigs, a radio broadcast, and reviews, and the 10th anniversary of my Acoustic & Eclectic radio show on Future radio that I did not expect to reach. However I cut back on organising many events due to a lack of time and going to concerts a lack of cash. Nights at Jurnets bar remain affordable and for the price of loose change in a pint pot their Halloween night produced the ghoulish storytelling of Nick Gibbs, an eclectic and thought provoking set of personal poetry, surf guitar, and looping from Jacob Solstice, Marla melding soaring guitars and swirling synths in a funky stew, and the astonishingly dextrous mesmerising classical and fl amenco guitar playing of Peter Turrell who himself organises free nights at Platform 12 on Sunday, The Wild Man Tuesday, The Walnut Tree Shades Thursday s and The Louis Marchesi on the fi rst Monday of the month. Great and economical ways to hear local live music for sure. While not always a fan of covers or tribute bands there are exceptions. Pure Floyd for example while mostly staying faithful in their rendition of the classic Dark Side.. take occasional liberties, delve into the earlier years airing Astronomy Domine and Lucifer Sam before delivering a superb Shine On.. Have a cigar and the title track of Wish you were here. While personally not a fan of The Wall ( Another Brick.. excepting) I understand that many are, but putting this aside they are a fi ne and fi tting tribute and rumours reach me that a member of the band may be putting a pre Dark Side.. Floyd tribute together to cover more of the era. Watch this space. Sticking with Prog Caravan played the arts centre on their 50th anniversary tour equally re-investigating their formative and most creative years with original member Pye Hastings centre stage delivering the bulk of the lead vocals, and mostly rhythm guitar, ably abetted by long standing cohorts multi-instrumentalist Geoffrey Richardson and keyboardist Jan Schellhass delivering the melody lines over a tight yet intricate rhythm section. Those forays into the past yielded the likes of three catchy tunes rolled into one in Memory Lain, Hugh, and Headloss, the delightful English eccentricity of the classic Golf Girl complete with spoons solo, pure pop of Love to Love You; and the psychedelic organ driven I wish I were stoned. More recent song Dead man Walking emphasises that they can write pulsating driving songs, while Farewell my old friend is a moving tribute to deceased former drummer Richard Coughlan ahead of the moment many awaited and still love all 20 minutes of 9 feet underground an epic in many parts from soft and sombre to frantic and furious culminating in a crescendo of cacophony and exuberance concluding Caravan s half century celebratory concert in style and proving that there is still life in the old dog yet.
