2 General Information Thank you for your interest in CaPAA s Jr. Players production of Seussical Jr.! Please review the following information. All registered 6 th -12 th grade CaPAA students will be cast in this production of Seussical Jr. Contact SHERI MELCHER, CaPAA Director, with any questions you may havesheri@capaa.org/ Please be sure to fill out the required paperwork prior to arriving at auditions found in this packet. REGISTRATION/ PRODUCTION FEE Please register on capaa.org prior to coming to auditions. A $25 deposit will hold your spot at auditions and in the production. TUITION is $290 for participation in this production. Payment in full or splitting into 3 payments is acceptable. All payments must be made by Jan. 15 or the student s participation may be in jeopardy. Checks made out to CaPAA, cash or credit card payments are acceptable. There are no added fees. Tuition includes a cast t-shirt and DVD of the performance. Most costume pieces are taken care of by us, however we may ask for you to provide a few small pieces. Basic black attire for underneath costumes are requested as well as black jazz shoes. Each cast member is asked to sell a half-page ad or more for the Playbill. More info on that shortly! AUDITIONS Auditions will take place on Tuesday, November 20th from 5:30-8:30pm at CaPAA- 222 Wyoming Ave, Scranton. NO special attire is needed. Upon arrival, please sign in at the BLACK BOX CAFE, starting at 5:15PM. Parents are asked to stay for the first 15 minutes for a PARENT MEETING from 5:30-5:45pm. Please hand in your CONFLICT SHEET and AUDITION FORM at this time. The CaPAA team provides a safe and encouraging environment during the audition process. We will take time to review some of the songs, discuss the characters and take the time needed to explain the audition process. It s OK if your child hasn t performed in a show before or if it s his/her 20th one- just encourage them to do their best- this is NOT Broadway-bootcamp! :) AUDITION MATERIALS Each student will participate in singing, acting and dancing auditions. For the singing auditions, please prepare a portion of one of the songs from Seussical, Jr. More details are included in this packet after page 3. For the acting auditions, you will be asked to read from the sides provided at the end of this packet (does not need to be memorized). If time allows, you will be taught a dance combination from one of the production numbers from the show. Please familiar yourself with the story of the show, the cast of characters and musical selections prior to auditions so that you feel confident! CASTING The creative team works very hard to place each child in the role that is best suited for them with regard to their audition, experience and readiness. The Cast List will be sent out by before the first rehearsal on TUESDAY, Nov. 27th th 5-7PM.

DIRECTOR- TBD STAGE MANAGER- TBD REHEARSALS Rehearsals are mainly Sundays 6-8pm, Tuesdays 5-7pm and Wednesdays 5-7pm as needed, starting on TUES, November 27th- 5-7PM. Please note that not all cast members may need to be called to all rehearsals. A rehearsal schedule will be sent before the 1st rehearsal after all CAST CONFLICTS are returned (Rehearsal Conflict Sheet is included in this packet- please fill out and return at auditions- very important!). It is important that cast members are on time to rehearsals and come prepared with their script, pencil and comfortable shoes to dance. Unexcused absences may affect the student s participation and/or role in the show. Tech & Dress Rehearsals will be held Sunday February 17 th through Thursday February 21st. Please hold the hours between 5-9pm.- not all evenings might be needed. A more detailed Tech Rehearsal schedule will be ready soon. Please let us know if you, or anyone you know is interested in any of these positions!

4 SINGING AUDITION: HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR AUDITION Please prepare a portion of one of the songs from Seussical, Jr. How to Prepare a song from the show: You can choose one of the songs included in the packet, OR please visit the link On the right hand side of the page, click on the Audition Central link. From there you can scroll down and click on the blue view score by character and song. Each link will take you to a cut of the song from the show. You can also visit the following link for the Seussical Jr soundtrack on YouTube: ACTING AUDITION: All of the audition sides are also found at the end of this packet. The scenes do not need to be memorized, although you should be familiar with them. Please look over specific roles/scenes you are interested in. In addition, the director may choose scenes for you to read. DANCE AUDITION: Please come to the audition prepared to learn a short combination from the show. We ask that you please come in clothing and shoes you feel comfortable moving in, for example no open toed shoes, no sandals, etc. Character Descriptions The Cat In The Hat The Cat In The Hat is the essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together. Look for a physically adept actor (male or female) to play The Cat, one who will be able to play many comic cameos and is comfortable improvising with an audience. Jojo Jojo is a "Thinker", a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose Thinks get him into constant trouble. By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own Thinks. Horton The Elephant Horton The Elephant is a gentle giant. Think of him as a big-hearted blue-collar guy who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. He is very unselfconscious. Horton's view of the world never changes - he believes in its goodness. By the end of the show, without even realizing it, he is ready to become a parent.

5 Gertrude Mcfuzz Gertrude Mcfuzz is very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. Gertrude changes during the show from a neurotic, nervous and shy bird into one with the power to protect and care for a baby elephant bird and commit herself to Horton. In other words, she stops worrying about her looks and grows up. Mayzie La Bird Mayzie La Bird is self-centered, selfish, and vain. Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn't all bad. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity-she realizes she isn't the kind of person who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg. Sour Kangaroo Sour Kangaroo isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. The Wickersham Brothers The Wickersham Brothers are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another. The Whos The Whos are a lot like you and me, only so small as to be invisible. Don't think of them as weird little aliens. They should be played for their inherent humanity. Mr. Mayor Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are Whos who are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake. 6 NAME Seussical Jr CONFLICT SHEET **IMPORTANT** PLEASE FILL OUT AND RETURN AT THE AUDITION PRODUCTION REHEARSAL SCHEDULE In general, we will rehearse on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings. Please hold 5-8PM on the following dates for rehearsals. Once we receive all cast conflicts, we will revise the schedule and send to all families. Not all cast members may be needed for the full time at all rehearsals. **If your child needs to carpool with another cast member, please note that on the conflict sheet. Please CIRCLE any dates below that your child is unavailable from 5:00-8:00pm. If your child has a regular weekly conflict, please advise below. Please note, that while we will do our best to accommodate your child's schedule, we cannot base an entire schedule around every cast member s individual conflicts. The number of conflicts your child has, will be taken into consideration when casting. Also note that we will not be able to take extra rehearsal time to catch your child up on missed days, due to our limited time together. We will do our best to make ourselves available outside of the scheduled rehearsal time to teach your child what they missed, or they are expected to ask friends in the cast. If you will be carpooling with another cast member, please let us know below. 9 Script: The Cat In The Hat SIDES FOR AUDITIONS (THE CAT appears wearing a stethoscope.) (as DOCTOR DAKE) Tut tut, the Doctor said. Such talk! It's too absurd! Your little tail is just right for your kind of bird! THE CAT (pause) All right already! Bring in the Pill-berry bush! SIDE 3 (THE CAT appears as an auctioneer. NOTE: Another "free" improvisational area for THE CAT please start with what's here, and improvise with audience a little.) THE CAT Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Seusseby's. Our first item up to bid this evening is lot 39, a pendulous pachyderm on egg, nest and tree. The bidding will begin at ten thousand dollars. Do I hear ten, ten thousand? (THE CAT improvs with the audience.) Going once, going twice???? (THE CAT bangs his gavel.) Sold to the man with the sideburns and the greasy black moustache - oh, excuse me, Madam! Sold instead, to the man from the circus!

10 Script: Jojo/Horton Hello...hello? (casually to his clover) Hello? Who's there? It's me, JoJo. The Mayor's son. I'm Horton. The elephant. JOJO JOJO JOJO Are you real, or are you a very large Think? Oh, I'm real all right. I would state that in ink. JOJO In my Thinks, I imagine a lot of strange things, and I go to strange places, as if I had wings! I love a good Think! Well, for me that goes double. JOJO Sometimes my Thinks are what get me in trouble. When you think, do you dream? In bright colors! JOJO

11 Me, too. (pause) And I got to strange places. Like Solla Sollew! JOJO When you think, do you think you could fly to the stars? Little friend, no one else could have Thinks such as ours!

12 Script: Gertrude Mcfuzz/Horton Horton, I bought you a scarf. GERTRUDE Thank you, Gertrude. Have you heard from Mayzie? She sent a card from Palm Beach. GERTRUDE Palm Beach! Gertrude, what if she never comes back! GERTRUDE Don't worry, she will. Um- Horton, notice anything different? Yes, its g-g-getting colder. SIDE 2 I'll bet you forgot about Gertrude McFuzz. Well, that's nothing new. I mean, everyone does. But Gertrude did something that few birds could do... GERTRUDE

13 Script: Mayzie La Bird/Horton Why, Mayzie, I couldn't. Of all silly things! I haven't got feathers. I haven't got wings. And not only that, but I'm here on a search. I just couldn't leave my poor Whos in the lurch! MAYZIE I won't be gone long, kid. I give you my word. I'll hurry right back, 'cause I'm that sort of bird! Oh, Horton, I promise! I'll fly back real soon. I'd only be gone for, say, one afternoon! (A beat, as considers this.) (relenting) Well, we all need vacations. All right, go on, take it. I'll sit on your egg and I'll try not to break it. But please come back quickly One hour, maybe two. I need to find JoJo. I've got to save Who!

14 Script: Sour Kangaroo/Gertrude/Horton Do you hear what I hear? Do you see what I mean? They made themselves heard though they still can't be seen! GERTRUDE They've proved they ARE persons, no matter how small. And their whole world was saved by the Smallest of All! SOUR KANGAROO (grudgingly) How true! Yes, how true! Said the Sour Kangaroo. And, from now on, you know what I'm planning to do? From now on, I'm going to protect them with you!
