TM THEATER A AT MONMOUTH gender society race leadership marriage Theater at Monmouth Season 48 JUNE 24 - SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 Season Sponsor Main Street Psychotherapy
2017 AT TAM POWER, PASSION & PRIVILEGE Dear Friends, Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none. All s Well That Ends Well The plays of Season 48 explore liberty, justice, and equality through the lens of Shakespearean thrillers, contemporary romances, and fantastical flights of fancy. These values make-up the founding framework of our country and, throughout its history, have been a source of great pride. The plays in our Power, Passion, and Privilege season were selected to highlight a contemporary social issue whether gender, race, leadership, or class and are also filled with joy, love, compassion, and understanding. We look forward to the season-long conversation these plays will inspire. Othello tackles the deadly sins of unbridled envy and excessive pride; Macbeth, the wheel of fate and the illusion of free-will; The Learned Ladies parades passion for knowledge above passion itself; the time-hopping tale, Three Days of Rain, exposes the hypocrisy of family secrets and lies; and Red Velvet examines society in turmoil through the first portrayal of Othello by a black man. This season s family show, Ruth Stiles Gannet s classic My Father s Dragon, in which a young boy embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue a mistreated baby dragon, offers the season s most valuable lesson treat each other with kindness. Great dramatic literature invites you to take a leap of faith into other worlds, other times, and other realities and find a bit of yourself, your fears, your joys, and your humanity. This year I, too, invite you to take that leap with TAM as a subscriber for this powerful season! 3 The Learned Ladies July 7 August 20 by Molière directed by Sally Wood When ladies of a household spurn all but intellectual pursuits, what is young love to do? Can a woman be both a devoted wife and a devoted scholar? Love and knowledge battle it out in Molière s rollicking satire on intellectual snobbery and pretension. Sponsored by Elaine & George Keyes
Macbeth July 14 August 18 by William Shakespeare directed by Dawn McAndrews In a savage world of ghosts, witches, and bloody battlefields, a dark prophecy leads a warrior and his wife past the point of no return. From its mesmerizing first moments to the last fulfilment of the witches curse, Shakespeare s swift and relentless tragedy unearths the terrifying consequences of blind ambition. Sponsored by David & Christine Heckman
Othello July 21 August 19 by William Shakespeare directed by Catherine Weidner Newly married and promoted, Othello finds himself the pawn in the manipulative games of his right-hand man, Iago. As his imagination is poisoned, Othello turns on his new bride and loyal lieutenant, rapidly spiraling from hero to murderer in Shakespeare s tale of jealousy, duplicity, and destruction. Sponsored by DR Struck Landscape Nursery and Austin Associates
Red Velvet July 28 August 17 by Lolita Chakrabarti directed by Jennifer Nelson Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, Edmund Kean, the greatest actor of his time, collapses on stage while playing Othello. A young black American actor is asked to take over the role. But as the public riot in the streets over the abolition of slavery, how will the cast, critics, and audience react to the revolution taking place on stage? Sponsored by Eaton Peabody and Maine Community Foundation TAM SEASON 47 JUNE 25-SEPTEMBER 25
Three Days of Rain July 1 August 18 by Richard Greenberg directed by Kate Bergstrom A famous architect has died and left a mysterious will, prompting his children and their best friend to search for answers about their families history. Darkly funny, Greenberg s play trips through time, playing children s perceptions against their parent s reality.
My Father s Dragon June 24 August 17 adapted by Dawn McAndrews directed by Adam Blais DRAGON DRAGON FATHER S MY MY When Elmer Elevator hears about the plight of a poor mistreated baby dragon, he packs his knapsack and stows away on a ship headed for Wild Island. Nothing will stop Elmer from rescuing the dragon! With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer outwits the fiercest of beasts and saves the day.
Peter and the Starcatcher September conceived for the stage by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers from the novels of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearsons directed by Bill Van Horn Haven t you always wondered: Where are Peter s parents?
