1 JULY 5, 2013 SUMMER STAFF EVENTS Morgan Open House for all Mystic Seaport Staff will be held on the Morgan on Thursday July 25 th from 7:30 8:45 AM. -Maureen Hennessey WELCOME NATASHA PRZYBYLSKI Natasha joined Mystic Seaport on Monday June 17th as a Part-Time Museum Teacher. She will report directly to Barb Jarnigan. Natasha is from Norwich, CT and went to Springfield College for history and education. She also studied at Boston University. 2 Please Note: Change of Date for July First Thursday Lecture Hosted Friday, July 5, Third Floor - Stillman Building For the first time ever, the First Thursday Lecture in July will be offered on Friday, July 5, to make way for the Fourth of July holiday celebrations. This is a very special presentation, featuring two outstanding speakers who will share their knowledge of the whaleship Charles W. Morgan in preparation for her July 21 launch. Steve Purdy will explain Launch Day details and logistics and Matthew Stackpole will entertain with his extensive array of anecdotal history and stories related to this historic ship. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:30 am and the presentation will begin at 9 am. Rhoda Hopkins Root HEALTH & FITNESS AT MYSTIC SEAPORT Yoga classes will resume with yoga on Wednesday July 10 th. Zumba classes will begin on Wednesday July 17 th. Lunchtime 30 minute walks every meet in the administration parking lot. Contact Elysa Engelman with any questions or in case of bad weather (x5071 or Elysa.engelman@mysticseaport.org). DUST OFF THAT OLD COPY OF MOBY-DICK AND BRING IT TO HAYNES HOUSE! The Moby-Dick Marathon team is looking for unwanted copies of Moby-Dick (although we can t imagine why someone would not want this beloved book). For this year s Marathon, we will re-paper maché our white friend with the pages of the book. Obviously, your book will not be returned, but you can feel satisfied in knowing that it will become blubber. Bring any copies you have (especially interesting or illustrated copies) down to the Haynes House/Education Department. The Marathon begins on July 31, so please get your donation in soon! -Krystal Rose Caption- Midnight, Shed: Moby receiving his first layers during last year s marathon.

3 WELCOME BABY ALEXANDRA! Gabriella Georgescu Lehmann of the Facilities Department, along with husband Jeremy and six year old daughter Daniella, welcomed to the world Alexandra Michaela on Friday, June 28th at 8:22 AM, weighing 6 lbs. 10 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches. Congratulations to Gabby and her family! MEET BRANDON MORGAN Name: Brandon Morgan Title: AV Production and Creative Services Assistant Department: Film Video Archives Extension: 4711 SB: How long have you been at Mystic Seaport? BM: 6 years

4 SB: What s the best part of your job? BM: The best part of my job is the feeling of accomplishment I get. Whether it s installing exhibit equipment, creating original programming, or providing troubleshooting services I always feel like I m contributing something to the museum and the public. SB: What are you passions/interests outside of the workplace? BM: I have my hand in a little bit of everything; books, amateur astronomy, cooking, film and TV, games of every type, and of course my Transformers collection but I have to say, sometimes you just can t beat sitting out on the deck, smoking a fine cigar, drinking craft beer, and listening to Collective Soul on the stereo. SB: What is your favorite memory of Mystic Seaport? BM: The 2011 Christmas Countdown Calendar project hands down. This was a rather daunting project that we kind of brought upon ourselves. I discussed the original idea with my partner Dan Harvison, who helped me develop it further into what eventually became the finished project. 27 original videos to be shot, edited, and uploaded often with only a matter of days to do so (sometimes less,) with about a month of work to create the artwork for the opening sequence it got pretty stressful. However, it was all worth it. The amount of pride I feel in what we both did far exceeds the trouble we went through. Even now, it s still an impressive feat and speaks volumes on our online presence. Take a look at some other local museums websites and YouTube channels, no one has the same video presence as MYSTIC SEAPORT. If you would like to be featured in the next HR Staff Bulletin, please contact Jeanne Gade at ext THIS WEEK FROM THE OPERATIONS COMMITTEE Questions regarding Duty Officer reports and the OPS committee please contact Jenny Doak at x5004. The exhibits department is working on a new sign for the shipyard to direct people to the Charles W. Morgan now that she not quite as visible with her new location on the lift dock. Stay tuned for additional info or look for the sign. The Morgan donation barrels will be getting a little makeover in preparation for the Morgan launch. They will be removed temporarily for painting. Keep an eye out for the new Photo Opportunity displays. There are two directional signs on campus that encourage visitors to take your picture here next to a nice scene and share your picture through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The signs are being tested by the L.A. Dunton and by the Oyster House. Summer Music Sundays start this Sunday with the Tavern open until 8PM serving a full menu and live music. The grounds are open for free from 5PM 8PM (exhibits are closed). The performer schedule is as follows: o July 7 Tommy Giarratano o July 14 Geoff Kaufman o July 21 - Tommy Giarratano o July 28 - Geoff Kaufman o August 4 Bruce Foulke o August 11 - Tommy Giarratano o August 18 Bruce Foulke o August 25 - Tommy Giarratano Starting Monday and running all week, contractors will be on campus between 5AM and 9AM grading the roadway around the village green and down to the shipyard in preparation for the
