6 Unearthing Freedom WILL I WANT, WILL I WISH FOR ALL THE THINGS I SHOULD HAVE DONE: LONGING TO FINISH WHAT I ONLY JUST BEGUN? How Glory Goes It is with extreme pride that BoHo Theatre presents its final production of our 2011/2012 Season, exploring the Bohemian Pillar of Freedom: Floyd Collins. On the surface, the story revolves around the attempts to free Floyd from his doom and the chaos of that venture. Yet the show also explores Floyd s own spiritual and emotional freedom when fear and isolation give way to inner reflection. It is in the most extreme circumstances that the complexity of familial relationships are unearthed. Though the story tackles an enormous breadth of issues ranging from media exploitation to prejudice, its core is that of family. Floyd s plight trapped alone in a narrow and treacherous underground passageway exposed much of society s strengths and weaknesses, showing moments of both extreme greed and heroism. In their masterpiece, Tina Landau and Adam Guettel have chosen to contrast these broader social issues with the intimate family dynamics surrounding Floyd: their past, what binds them to one another, their weaknesses, and how in the end there is no greater source of both peace and pain than that of family. Guettel has woven moments of simplicity and serenity throughout an incredibly complicated and challenging score, just as Landau has blended the broader social messages with the intimate and heartfelt story of a family. These contrasts and challenges are what make Floyd Collins one of the most beloved pieces in musical theater today. Sincerely, Peter Marston Sullivan Artistic Director, BoHo Theatre
