11 (4) FINLAND: COMMENTARY The easternmost of the three main Nordic countries, its main land border being with Russia, Finland (population: 5.5 million) is somewhat different as a film market. This is partly because of government policy which, through the Finnish Film Foundation, heavily subsidises local film production and distribution a policy which appears to work: local films account for some 30% of releases and 25% of box office. The Finnish language also plays a part. Whereas Danish, Norwegian and Swedish speakers can easily understand one another, Finnish speakers are out on their own, with a language stemming from an entirely different root. If Finnish audiences want to be able to understand a film without the aid of dubbing (which is very rare) or subtitles, they need to see a Finnish film. And, in significant numbers, they seem to do so. All these factors size, language, governmental market intervention mean that Finland offers very limited opportunities for films from elsewhere in Europe. Less than 200 films are released each year, while annual admissions vary between 7 and 8.5 million. The average, however, is near the bottom of the range, distorted by a spike in 2012 when box office revenue neared EUR 80 million, thanks mainly to the James Bond movie SKYFALL. But, with US titles accounting for 50% of releases and local titles 35%, there is little room for other-language films, especially arthouse. That said, however, there seems to a solid audience for such titles, championed by adventurous distributors such as Cinema Mondo and Future Film. The home entertainment market is pretty close to the European average: disappearance of rental; levelling off of DVD sales; an increased interest in various forms of digital delivery, although this has yet entirely to replace the older forms. In most respects, the country is best seen as part of the rapidly developing Scandinavian home entertainment market, with platforms such as Headweb supplying titles to subscribers throughout the region. This trend is discussed in more detail in Section (4) of the section on Denmark. It remains to be seen what effect this will have on the Finnish market for Finnish films, since only 3.5% of the titles on Headweb are Finnish. Indeed, the territory looks particularly at risk from the wave of homogenisation that tends to come with major SVOD platforms such as Netflix, which launched simultaneously in all Nordic countries in late Market Study Finland , July 2015, by Split Screen for German Films
12 (5) GERMAN FILMS IN FINLAND Finland is a very small market for German films, with only 23 released over the five-year period surveyed. Two of these were Finnish co-productions and a third which also happens to be the highest-grossing German film of the period the latest episode in the PETTERSSON & FINDUS franchise, previous episodes of which have been majority-produced in a Nordic country. The latest outing for the grumpy farmer and his cat was by far the most successful film of the half-decade, accounting for 42% of all the tickets sold to German films. There were two other children s films in the five-year German Top 10: KONFERENZ DER TIERE and DAS SANDMÄNNCHEN - ABENTEUER IN TRAUMLAND also. If we further remove from the list six English-language films, we are left with just over 38,500 tickets sold to German festival and arthouse films and German stories in five years no great achievement and less than 30% of the tickets sold to PETTERSSON UND FINDUS alone. The situation is slightly better on the home entertainment front (see above), where a small number of festival favourites are bulked up by an array of German genre titles which did not so much as trouble the surface of the theatrical market not that it made much difference in the end: German films share of market supply (with revenue, of course, impossible to calculate) was pretty much the same as their share of the theatrical market: +/- 1%. One relatively curious facet of the Finnish market is the high number of boutique distributors handling the majority of films: while Future Film released eight of the titles (mainly festival and arthouse), the remaining 15 were opened by eight different companies, ranging from veteran Finnkino for the Englishlanguage titles to newcomer Cinemanse which drew just over 2,000 Finnish cinemagoers to CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA. The charts on the following page show numbers of releases and box office revenue for the key groups identified in the introduction to this Report. 12 Market Study Finland , July 2015, by Split Screen for German Films
