15 (6) GERMAN FILMS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC, : AN ANALYSIS With its 815km border with Germany (and almost as much again shared with the German-speaking Austria), it is scarcely surprising that German stories are by far the biggest category of those German films and majority co-productions imported into the Czech Republic: 29 of the 56 films released between 2010 and 2017, accounting for 513,034 (40%) of the admissions. Three of them are films made mainly for Czech audiences, led by HABERMANN, a German-produced adaptation of a classic Czech novel which drew the survey period s second biggest audience (130,858). Sandwiched either side of it in the Top 10 of German films, meanwhile, are the broad German comedy FACK JU GÖHTE (127,066) and its sequel, which was even more popular than the original, selling 212,192 tickets. Also performing strongly is another comedy, DER 7BTE ZWERG. But Czech audiences didn t really get ER IST WIEDER DA, which sold under 10,000 tickets. The vital signs of the Czech theatrical economy are generally positive. Admissions rose by 32% over the period surveyed and box office by 32%, although there were some fluctuations along the way. German films have had a more chequered career in the territory, with their market share ranging from a half of one per cent (in 2016) to 2.32% in Significantly, the latter result was achieved, not by one breakout film, but by four solid rather than spectacular performers: CLOUD ATLAS, with 128,000 admissions; KONFERENZ DER TIERE (60,000); RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION (43,000) and A DANGEROUS METHOD (23,000). Arthouse releases are solid but not spectacular, with two films that were in Competition at Cannes - DAS WEISSE BAND in 2010 and TONI ERDMANN in heading the list. It is noticeable, however, that the solid wedge of arthouse films in the by-release chart above shrinks to a sliver in the second by-admissions list. The remainder of the Top 10 positions were filled by animation and children s movies like HAPPY FAMILY and KONFERENZ DER TIERE, with DIE BIENE MAJA - DER KINOFILM and ÜBERFLIEGER: KLEINE VÖGEL, GROSSES GEKLAPPER also drawing good audiences. In sum, the Czech Republic is a small but dynamic market of just over 10 million people who, on average, go to the movies just over once a year so, with an average of only seven films released over the period surveyed, the territory is unlikely ever to be a major market for German films. European movies, however, do make up a greater proportion of those opening than in most countries and local product is also widely distributed, cornering an annual market share of around 20%. But Germany is not the biggest source of European films, coming in third place after France and the UK. And returns are modest: in 2017, three of the seven German films released sold under 3,000 tickets. Market Study Czech Republic , published May 2018, by Split Screen for German Films 15
16 What works in the Czech Republic? Broad German comedies like the first two FACK JU GÖHTE films have performed well in the Czech Republic and, in general terms, lighter fare seems to do best. Also worth noting is the fact that the Czech market is open to mainstream German films targeted primarily at a German audience with just short of 30 released there between 2010 and What doesn t work in the Czech Republic? Arthouse films have a hard time given the size of the audience and the comparatively low percapita attendance rate. What else might appeal? The range of releases is already quite wide and, by their nature, films targeted at the German domestic audience are unlikely to be modified for an extra audience of 10 million people. But the Czech distributors who have handled the German comedies have clearly found a way to position them. Market Study Czech Republic , published May 2018, by Split Screen for German Films 16
17 (7) GERMAN FILMS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC, : TV AND VOD The Czech capital of Prague is one of the hubs of Central and Eastern European pay-tv channels and, increasingly, VOD platforms. The latter are discussed in a separate section of this report. Meanwhile, in terms of traditional television, the country is well supplied in all respects, with some 150 channels broken up - as indicated in the chart below - into the usual groups. Free-to-air services are supplied mainly by national broadcaster Ceske Televize (five channels) and private companies Nova (seven), Prime Group (six) and TV Barrandov (four). The same companies supply pay-tv channels alongside the usual suspects: HBO (whose European operation is headquartered in Prague), Disney, Cinemax and Turner. Czech Republic: TV Channels by Content General (inc. News) Sports Children and Family Entertainment Lifestyle Movies Music The film channel whose programming is analysed below is owned and operated by arthouse distributor Film Europe, and thus is very different from film channels in other territories in that it has an inbuilt arthouse bias, and its library includes (but is not limited to) titles that Film Europe has distributed theatrically. Market Study Czech Republic , published May 2018, by Split Screen for German Films 17
18 The chart below is based on the channel s entire library of 200 titles. The German titles were: AUS DEM LEBEN DER MARIONETTEN; BAIKONUR; THE CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA; KRIEGERIN; QUATSCH UND DIE NASENBÄRBANDE; THIS AIN T CALIFORNIA; TONI ERDMANN; VICTORIA; DIE VIERTE MACHT; VON CALIGARI ZU HITLER; WER WENN NICHT WIR and WESTERN. Czech Republic: Films on the Film Europe Channel by Country of Origin France Sweden Italy Norway Denmark UK Germany Finland Other Europe Other For details of on-line VOD platforms available in the Czech Republic, see the appropriate appendix. Of the distributors listed in Section (4) above who handled three or more German films and/or majority co-productions, two have their own VOD platforms or have deals with existing ones: - Aerofilms has its own platform, AeroVod, which makes available a selection of its own and other distributors titles; - Film Europe releases titles on all platforms and is discussed in the VOD appendix.
