1 Audition Packet Thoroughly Modern Millie: The Musical & William Shakespeare s HAMLET, (Children of Eden: The Musical 3 rd show TBA) PLAYHOUSE SUMMER PERFORMANCE INTENSIVE 2014: featuring the YOUTH REPERTORY THEATRE COMPANY Directors: Kate Horvath In her seventh year as Education Director at the Playhouse, Kate is proud to share the transformational power of theatre with students, families, and the community. She earned her BFA in Theatre from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2001 and spent five years working as an actor and singer in New York City. Some of her favorite roles include Little Red in Into the Woods (UMD & The Duluth Playhouse), Nina in The Seagull (Another Theatre Company, NYC), Julia in The Rivals (The Pearl Theatre Company, NYC), Horatio in Hamlet (The Zipper, NYC) and Mimi in RENT (The Duluth Playhouse). While in New York, Kate studied voice with Liz Caplan Vocal Studios, working with other professionals who fueled her desire to learn more about acting, directing, and teaching the craft. She is proud of the continued growth and excellence of the Playhouse Education Program and Children s Theatre and encourages folks to get involved in one of the most exciting regional opportunities for youth development, family engagement, and FUN! Kate is the co-creator of Stage Play: Theatre for Children with Autism, with the Scottish Rite Clinic. She is also the creator of other unique Playhouse programming like InterACT: Home Base residency for middle schools, and advanced teen programs 360 Theatre, and The Playhouse's Summer Performance Intensives, which offer challenging training and thoughtprovoking performance opportunities, and training in multiple disciplines. Some of her favorite directorial credits include; A Midsummer Night s Dream, Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse, Romeo & Juliet, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Liz Larson- Liz Larson is excited to be back for her fourth year at the Playhouse Summer Intensive, having directed West Side Story and Little Women, and GREASE. Liz has served as the Theatre Director for Duluth Central High School, Park High School-Cottage Grove, Mounds View High School and South High School in Minneapolis. She has directed for The Play Ground, The Playhouse, UW-Superior, and The College of St. Scholastica, and has performed, directed, and choreographed at The Shack Dinner Theatre. She has toured nationally with NCT Productions and Troupe America. Liz is most proud of co-creating, writing, and performing: Live from the Krakatoa Lounge, A Krakatoa Holiday and A Krakatoa Homecoming, as Maxine Liebowitz of The Lovely Liebowitz Sisters. The Liebos performed for 13 years and in 46 states in this cross between the Andrews Sisters and The Three Stooges. Highlights include appearances at: Harrah s Casino, Atlantic City, opening for Phyllis Diller, providing entertainment for Charles Schultz s Snoopy s Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, California and performing for the St. Paul Saints by special request of Bill Murray. She had a blast acting in Feature Films: Drop Dead Fred, Equinox, Twister s Revenge, and Hometown Boy Makes Good Casting youth ages Cast of approximately 30 per show, shows will alternate in a true repertory fashion. Should enrollment and student interest warrant it, Children of Eden: The Musical will be added as the third show option. 2 Rehearsal and Performance Information: The Playhouse summer 2014 performance intensive for ages is the most challenging and engaging teen theatre experience in the region! There is a strong educational component for all shows, participation is by audition, and tuition is $ for this performance intensive experience. Students fully produce their own shows from the ground up, learning elements of theatrical production like costumes, sound, lights, and front of house operations as well as acting, voice and movement! Rehearsals will be held at our Conservatory Space in the Wells Fargo Building, Michigan St. Level. Rehearsals will be held July 7 th thru performances August 7 th August 17 th. Monday Friday from 9 am 4 pm. (Occasionally Technical work days will be TBA). We will switch to evening tech. & dress rehearsals at The Playhouse prior to opening. Detailed tech. schedules will be provided at that time. Performances ( depending on the two or three show format, subject to change) August 7 th 7 PM August 8 th, 7 PM August 9 th 2 & 7 PM August 10 th 2 PM August 14 th 7 PM August 15 th 7 PM August 16 th 2 & 7 PM August 17 th 2 PM (strike) Audition Preparation and Process: We request that actors provide a resume and a current photo or headshot along with their completed audition form. All Actors are expected to sing: Please come prepared with one bars of a musical theatre selection that demonstrates your vocal range. We advise selecting a piece in the style of Thoroughly Modern Millie. An accompanist will be provided at auditions. Movement: There may be movement at auditions please be dressed appropriately. Hamlet: All actors will be asked to read from the script for Hamlet. Sides (scenes from the script) will be provided at the auditions. All are encouraged to read the plays before auditioning. Short-term loan copies are available in the Playhouse office for a $5 fully refundable deposit. The most important thing is: remember to have a good time and relax! We are looking for a group of committed young artists who will have fun working together and putting the INTENSIVE into their performance. Sings and speaks in Chinese. CHING HO: A Chinese immigrant working to bring his mother to the United States. Younger brother of Bun Foo and henchman to Mrs. Meers. Sings and speaks in Chinese. ENSEMBLE: MODERNS; STENOGRAPHERS; MUZZY'S BOYS, ETC. HOTEL PRISCILLA GIRLS: friends of Millie, Ruth, Lucille, Daphne, Cora, Mathilda, Ethel Peas, Rita, Alice JIMMY SMITH: A suave city slicker who unexpectedly becomes the story's hero. He falls in love with Millie. MILLIE DILLMOUNT : A spunky, modern woman trying to make it in New York City. She falls in love with Jimmy. Our story's protagonist.

3 MISS DOROTHY BROWN: A naive, wealthy girl who has moved to New York to change her lifestyle. She becomes Millie's roommate and confidant. MISS FLANNERY: An uptight, stern office manager. She runs the stenographer pool at Sincere Trust Insurance Company. MRS. MEERS: A former actress turned human trafficker pretending to be a kindly Chinese woman. She oversees the Hotel Priscilla where she secretly sells her tenants. MUZZY VAN HOSSMERE: A glamorous actress and singer at a night club. She becomes Millie's friend and mentor. TREVOR GRAYDON: An executive at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. He is sharp, ambitious, and secretly romantic.
