The Scene: The Irish countryside, Time: After the village fair, dusk. Spreadino the ~e ws, by Lady Gregory, offers the stage the spirit and wit of the Irish character. Dire~ted in conjunction with the honors thesis program, the 'production tells the tale of the power of the spoken word as it passes from mouth to mouth. Lady.Gregory, founder o! ~e Irish theatre in Dublin, creates a warm world of humour, representati ve of the tales and individuals with whom she was famil iar. Often considered Oscar Wilde's lightest, wittiest, and best comedy,... "Earnest" is a brilliant satire of upper class English society that carries universal themes allowing for this modernized translation. Wilde's portraits of these shallow and idle characters lead to hysterical misunderstandings that are equally entertaining in any time period. I hope you enjoy this glimpse at Wilde's enduring wit. I would like to thank the cast - it was fabulous working with you all - and Marge and Dan Donovan for their unending support. Enjoy the show! - Debbie "Indicates membership in Alpha Psi Omega, Alpha Alpha Zeta Cast, Honorary Dramatic Fraternity at Eastern Illinois University
