3 FROM THE EDITOR ONE COOL YEAR CONTENT As the summer heat is a thing of the past, Dubai is preparing for the Christmas season and New Years Celebration. All over town decorations are put in place and the beautiful lights glimmer in the evening breeze. Take a walk anywhere in the city and enjoy the magnificent illuminations and decorations. As we at Go! Dubai Magazine celebrate one year of publishing I look back on our humble beginnings and what we have accomplished so far. Never in my wildest imagination could I forsee the fantastic reception of our magazine. People have been so friendly and advertisers really get the attention they want. All done in a happy and informative way. I thank all of our friends and partners in the magic city of Dubai. As you will notice in this anniversary edition we have by now also added material from Abu Dhabi. Just an hour away from Dubai, Abu Dhabi also offers lots of things to do and experience. Many of the visitors to Dubai take a day or two of their trip to go and visit Abu Dhabi also and all that the city has to offer. For example Ferrari World, especially when the Formula 1 racing teams comes to town for a blistering event of speed, courage and glamour. But also the fine tuned concerts and culture venues are high in demand. Abu Dhabi has lots to offer, as has Dubai. We also feature an exclusive interview with Mr Tobbe Larsson, a man who has dedicated his life to horses. I had the pleasure to meet him on his stay in Sweden this summer for a long talk on horses and his philosophy on training these magnificent creatures. Although he is born and raised in Sweden he consider Dubai to be his home where he feels more like a part of the Dubai society than a swede abroad. This one-off tribute concert will feature re-works of some of the greatest Abdel Halim Hafez songs from the 1950s and 60s in a new jazz and latino sound, as part of Harfoush s music project titled The Egyptian Jazz Projekt. MAGIC PHIL ABDEL HALIM HAFEZ Abdel Halim, also known as Al-Andaleeb Al-Asmar (The Black Nightingale), was famous beyond the Egyptian arts scene, his songs are masterpieces of collaborative efforts by some of the Arab World s top poets and composers. Halim performed in almost every Arab country and occasionally sang in Europe, including London s Royal Albert Hall in 1968, where he received one of the greatest standing ovations of his career. Ahmed Harfoush regularly appears at leading venues and events in Europe and the Middle East. His extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz and swing, the American songbook, musical theatre, Arabic songs and contemporary hits. Among the general atmosphere of cool, visitors can also enjoy deals, product launches and designer talks.# SOLE DXB 2018 december The United Arab Emirates was formed on 2 December 1971, when the United Kingdom s treaty expired and the separate sheikdoms decided to form a union. At first the UAE was a federation of six emirates Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ajman. The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah joined one year later. In 1968, the United Kingdom announced their intention of withdrawing from the Arabian Gulf by the end of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, father of the nation, with the late ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, took the lead in calling for a federation that would include not only the seven emirates that made up the Trucial States, but also Qatar and Bahrain. Eventually, the seven states followed Sheikh Zayed in establishing the UAE, which formally emerged on the international stage on 2 December Join us in celebrating the UAE s 46th National Day, Emirati heritage and culture with a number of activities throughout the week, including the UAE National Day 2017 parade downtown. National Day is one of the most celebrated days in the UAE as the historical moment when the seven emirates came together to form one country is honoured. But the label equestrian artist doesn t really apply to this man of marvel when it comes to horses. He has developed a unique sense for these great animals and the way they think and react. And in doing so he can get the majestic horse to do almost anything. But it s not a circus act, everything is done by the horses own free will and a lot of understanding from him. Just watching him handle horses is pure magic and therefore he has created a world reputation among the exclusive crowd of horse owners and their families to be the best when it comes to understanding horses and make them do things you didn t think was possible. 10 1 2 3 TOBBE S BUCKET LIST: Skydive Dubai. Take a head first dive into the city and see all the iconic landmarks from above. Xline zipline. It s the world s longest urban zipline. Hook up to the cable and get ready for the ride of your life. IMG World. The world s largest indoor theme park. That says it all, I guess. A couple of years later you decided to establish your training center in the south of Sweden. In 2001 an old parish manor came up for sale and I went there to have a look. I sort of already had a vision of what I was looking for to be able to grow my love for horses and liberty training. And when I saw the majestic building from 1863 I just fell in love with it and the huge potential for developing it into what I already envisioned. We got right down to it and started to develop the buildings and grounds into a serene and perfect training environment for my horses. Today we also have other professionals who come here to train their horses and seek my advice and we use the beautiful manor and its surroundings for my TV-shows and photoshoots and so on. Something that had a great impact on the Swedish world of horses is my huge TV-success on national television called Ponnyakuten (the pony emergency). A series not only loved by young riders, but also by many older equestrians. As a result of the success the program was also sold to Norway and Denmark. Tell us about when you were invited to the great horse show at Wembley in London, England. After the success with my liberty training show I got invited to Wembley Arena. It was a little intimidating at first but I knew I could rely on Nicke to perform and it was just one of those magical nights where everything worked perfectly and the response was huge. The audience loved every minute of the show. And, as it happens in life, I got to meet a lot of important and interesting people. This was the first time I met the Queen of England, Elisabeth II, and the Royal family of United Arab Emirates. This I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams. But as it turned out to Love and Respect Your Horse Tobbe Larsson s motto be, they were all very friendly and this was to be the start of a great friendship with the royals of UAE. This year we celebrate 8 years of friendship and have very close family ties. You now live both in Dubai and in Sweden over the year. I usually stay in Sweden at my mansion in the summer. I really love it and it s a little bit to hot in UAE at that time. But when the end of the swedish summer draws to a close I just have to get back to UAE again. Horses have Welcome to my world of horses, Tobbe greets when we arrive at his big house, located in the lush landscape with rolling fields of crops and an alley of old chestnut trees leading up to the mansion. Tell us a little bit about how you came to be an important person within the horse world. It is rather interesting since I really didn t grow up in a horse-interested family. No one was interested in horses or had any experience of horses but for as long as I can remember I had a close connection to these lovely and powerful animals. I guess you can say that I had a certain overwhelming feeling when I saw these lovely creatures and the grace and integrity they communicate. I mean, what is there not to love about them. So basically I spent most of my younger days around horses anyway because I had a feeling of belonging in their company. So eventually you got your own first horse, I guess. Yes, I just had to. When I was seven years old I got myself a small Shetland pony. Quite suitable for a seven year-old. But Shetland ponies are really a big horse in a small body and they are very mindstrong and have a certain will of their own. But if you can harvest all that stubbornness and energy and channel it into something fun and exciting for both you and the horse it s a never ending well of happiness. With this Shetland pony I had my first experience of liberty training. If you approach any horse with the mindset that you are going to teach it to do things you want it to do, you will fail immensely. The way I do it is to accept the horse for what it is, its personality you can say. And only by doing this you can understand what you need to do to communicate with it and make it understand you are not there to be the boss but a friend and leader. And then you will have a great partnership and build the trust needed to handle these majestic animals. It s all about love and respect. Then in 1999 something happened that rocketed you to stardom for sure. The biggest horse show in Sweden is held every year since 1977 and hosts most disciplines like show jumping and dressage. I was approached by the organisation in 1999 and they wanted me to come and do my liberty training show. I had a new star in my stables, an American Quarter Horse called Nicke. I have had him since he was very young and bred and trained him myself. I still have him, by the way. Me and Nicke put on a brilliant show and the audience, crew and other horse people around was just amazed by the things me and Nicke did together. So basically, me and Nicke became superstars overnight and we got invited to all the big horse shows internationally. The years that followed we travelled to all the major horse events and shows. Arabian Court at One&Only Royal Mirage. This is a must for me. Set in beautiful surroundings and with the Arabic arches and mosaic floors this is my favourite place to dine. P.F. Chang s. One of the best Italian/French/ Mediterranean Restaurants in Dubai, according to me. The home of Cuisine Nicoise, a cross between old Genovese/Ligurian cooking. Al Qasr Lebanese Restaurant. This restaurant serves fine Lebanese cuisine. Live entertainment. belly dancer and Arabic singers accompanied by the resident band. zuma. 11 a very unique role in the Arabic world which might be hard to understand. But, again, just look at a horse and you cannot help but to fall in love with the beauty, strength and integrity of this animal. And the Royals treat their horses like royalty. They get the best treatment and training and care in the world. Not by pushing and demanding but to understand every unique individual and the limits and resources that can be harvested with giving them the right love and handling. Life in UAE is a little bit different than in Sweden. For sure. There are not so many similarities actually. Apart from the world of the most expensive horses money can buy, you are always considered a part of the family given the right circumstances. I have been blessed to meet so many important people in UAE and once they accept you into their circle of family and friends, you are always a part of their closest network. I was invited to Presidents Cup and Nations Cup. For every year I live there my Emirate family grows and I guess I have to say I actually feel more at home in UAE than in Sweden by now. I really don t know what will be my home in the future, it will become clear soon and then I will make a decision. We know the UAE lifestyle is often misunderstood by foreigners. True, and this is something I work with to change. Apart from my horses I help Swedish companies and even the Swedish Government to understand the cultural differences and mentality of UAE. Many companies approach the markets in a completely wrong way and hence will never succeed. Also there has been some unfortunate misinterpretations from the Swedish Government and then I have tried to help them undo the knot of diplomatic language. UAE in general and Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular are also very safe places to live and do business. This most Europeans don t understand, sadly. The biggest difference is actually when I go back to Sweden for the summer stay. It takes a while for me to get with the program and lock my front door and don t leave my car keys still in the ignition. Also that I can t do things any time of the day, as I can do in UAE. If I need to get a prescription I need to wait until they open at the pharmacy, for example. In Dubai you just go when you need to, even 3am at night.# Horses have shaped the type of life I live today, they have given me the opportunity to meet royalty, artists and many interesting people I would never have met without them. Now the virtuoso of the highest order, French harpist Xavier De Maistre, is scheduled for two captivating performances. His first performance, Spanish Nights, is on December 6th with works from Albéniz, Granados, de Falla. At the second harp recital on December 7th, In the Heart of the Oasis, he plays works by Debussy, Fauré and others. DUBAI OUTLET MALL SHOP AT LOW COST Dubai Al-Ain Road (Route 66) The Middle East s only outlet has 240 stores and 800 brands. Depending on supply, timing and trip you can find brand clothes that are 30 to 90 percent cheaper than the regular price. 19 ABU DHABI LAST RACE FOR THE CHAMPIONS As the last race for the season the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix kicks off a week of fun and fast action in town. First held in 2009 it has been a success for everybody who likes fast cars, screaming engines and extravagant events. So strap into the action when the Formula One-circus comes to town. WHY GO? It s hard to find a more spectacular setting for a Grand Prix than Yas Island, on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi. It s home to numerous 5-star hotels and the Ferrari World theme park, and the 5.55-kilometre (3.45-mile) Yas Marina Circuit is a suitably glamorous part of the FIA Formula One World Championship. The track has many unique touches. It runs alongside the island s spectacular marina; it passes under the 5-star Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi hotel and alongside a 60-metre sun tower. The exit of the pit lane even crosses under the circuit. It s a very impressive facility and the track layout is fun, so it s a great place. With Ferrari World just around the corner, the race has a strong Ferrari flavour, says F1 veteran Felipe Massa, who was one of the best drivers the Ferrari racing team had for many years. Away from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has lots to offer. It s the largest and wealthiest of the seven United Arab Emirates, with a crude oil supply that isn t expected to run out until the 22nd century. Unlike some of its neighbours in the Gulf, Abu Dhabi has retained its local traditions and charms, making it an enjoyable and interesting stop-off. Abu Dhabi has a very cosmopolitan feel and there is something for everyone. There s an eclectic mix of international cuisine to suit all budgets, starting at the Emirates Palace, for a time the world s most expensive hotel, down to the cafe culture that prevails throughout the Middle East. For traditional Abu Dhabi cuisine, head to the area surrounding the fish market in Abu Dhabi city. THINGS TO SEE AND DO In Abu Dhabi there is the aforementioned Ferrari World theme park, covering 250,000 square metres and featuring a G-Force Tower, driving schools for children and adults, high-tech theatres and lots of cars on display. Witness crews of 10 people battle against other teams in traditional 30ft (9m) long wooden rowing boats, to try and win the prestigious Maktoum Cup. The day also hosts the first round of the Dubai Fishing Competition. Founded in 1988, DIMC proudly organised the waterborne sports series to encourage sporting excellence and to take advantage of Dubai s lengthy coastline. Many of the dhows and craft are owned by Sheikhs.
