1 1 MUSIC GRADE 5 TERM 2 If you want to write your own music, you need to know two important things: Note values Note names

2 2 NOTE VALUES Note values show rhythm and beat. It is made of sound and silences known as rests.

3 3 Now let us try an exercise using our knowledge of note values: ACTIVITY 1: Create a musical time line using the notes from your note value table. The time line should go from 0 to 20. Here is the order in which this can be done. 1. Put notes down one by one, above a time line, leaving the right space for the note that went before. 2. When all the notes are on the time line, clap the rhythm that you have written. 3. Use the French time names to assist you.

4 4 THE TREBLE CLEF The Treble clef is also called the G clef. This is the symbol for the higher pitches/sounds. It is called the G clef because you start writing it on the second line of the stave and is the note G. NOTE NAMES In staff notation, notes have letter names A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Staff means that the notes are written on the 5 lines and 4 spaces called the STAVE. Lines Spaces Below or above the stave short lines, LEDGER LINES, can extend the note naming. Middle C is written below the stave on a ledger line.

5 5 THE PIANO KEYBOARD C D E F G A B C D E F G WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to Leopold and Anna Maria Pertl Mozart in 1756 in what is now Salzburg, Austria. His father Leopold Mozart was a choir master, a minor composer and an experienced teacher. When Mozart s sister Nannerl was seven, she began keyboard lessons with her father, while the three year old Wolfgang watched with fascination. At age 4, Mozart himself began keyboard lessons, playing without fault and with great sensitivity. By age 5, Mozart was composing short pieces which his father wrote down for him. Mozart s father eventually decided to give up composing

6 6 when young Amadeus impressive musical talents became evident. At age 6, Mozart and Nannerl began travelling through Europe with their father, giving concerts in the courts of Europe. While touring, Mozart learned to play the violin and the organ. At age 8, Mozart published his first two sonatas for the harpsichord. At 13, he composed his first opera at the request of an emperor. At age 25, Mozart had established himself as the finest keyboard player in Vienne, and was recognised as an accomplished composer. Some of his most famous pieces include Eine Kleine Nacht Musik, which means A Little Night Music, and his twelve variations on the French tune Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, called Variations on Ah vous dirais-je, Maman. On 5 December 1791, Mozart died at 35 years of age, leaving behind a collection of more than 600 compositions, including works for the symphony, the piano, and the opera. Some of these pieces are considered to be the finest works of the Classical style.
