1 May/June 2011 The Guilder The Newsletter of the Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists The American Guild of Organists promotes the organ in its historic and evolving roles, encourages excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and provides a forum for the mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members. The Dean s List Dear Friends First, I wish to extend congratulations to the six newlyelected members of the Executive Committee: Weldon Adams, Class of 2014 Josh Brodbeck, Class of 2014 Terry McCandless, Class of 2012 (unexpired term) Sara Montgomery, Class of 2013 (unexpired term) Katie O Keefe, Class of 2012 (unexpired term) May Schwarz, Class of 2014 Welcome to the Executive Committee, and on behalf of the entire chapter, thank you for your willingness to serve! Their terms will begin on July 1. Second, in case you don t already know this, Paul Jacobs won a Grammy Award in February for best instrumental soloist performance (without orchestra) in the classical category for his recording of Olivier Messiaen s Livre du Saint Sacrement. Mr. Jacobs is considered one of the world s most accomplished organists and is also chair of the organ department at the Juliard School. This is the first disc of solo classical organ music ever to win a Grammy! Third, in 1982 the AGO established an Annual Fund to help generate income beyond member dues. Monies raised support the general operating expenses of the national organization. Our Executive Committee has approved a contribution of $500 to the Annual Fund in honor of our membership. And finally, thank you all for an extraordinary program year. From Hector Olivera to the Bach Birthday Bash and everything in between and following, it was a privilege and a joy to work with those of you who, through planning, presenting, performing, or attending, made each of these events a tremendous success. We are making friends for the organ thank you each for your part in that! I look forward to the coming year. All best for a sunny and relaxing summer Sara Inside Open Positions... 2 Recitals & Concerts Directory Updates... 4 At a Glance Scholarship Applications are due May 30.
