Richard McDonnell moebird@live.com Chapter Web Site National AGO Web Site Dear Friends, I hope the summer has gotten off to a wonderful start for you! Our annual meeting at Gil's house was absolutely fabulous. Our programming for the upcoming season was discussed and approved. Some highlights to look forward to are our September potluck at the Ragsdales, a program of hymns, anthems, and readings through the liturgical year, the Savannah Children's Chorus, and a Festival of Keys...just to name a few. We also discussed the budget for the upcoming year and different forms of advertisement to encourage new attendees at our events. Thank you, Gil, for hosting us this month. The food was delicious and we were able to discuss many things in great detail. Don't forget that our Noon Friday concerts will resume in September. Each concert will be at different locations throughout Beaufort County in order to showcase some of our fine instruments. We will also be trying to include organ students from various universities on these concerts. As organists, we should always encourage and support those that will one day fill our shoes...organ shoes, that is. Please be sure to pay attention to the website and newsletters each month for details. Our Sub Dean is also doing a superb job of coordinating our event in October. It will consist of hymns, anthems, and readings of the liturgical year. Performers will include choirs from various local churches, bells, brass, and organ. You can find out more about this event in the Sub Dean note below. We will also be producing a member directory...please be sure to send your picture and updated information to Gary. Additionally, we welcome Greg Hollinger to the Lowcountry AGO Board. Thank you so much, Greg, for your willingness to serve. I can't begin to express what a privilege it is to work with such a fine board and with such great musicians in the lowcountry. It makes planning a joy! I'd like to thank each of you for what you do! Remember to always keep a song in your heart, and organ shoes on your feet! In Pipedreams, Chad A. Martin, Dean of the Low Country Chapter AGO
2 A Note from our Sub-Dean Our end of the year Annual Meeting was a very enjoyable evening at the Campbell's. We had over 20 members and friends in attendance. Gil's chicken was a great hit and very juicy. We had lots of good conversation and a brief meeting. Thank You to Campbell's for hosting a very successful event. Next year's programs were presented. We will begin our year with a dinner at the Ragsdale's on Monday September 11. More information to follow. Our first big event will be on October 15 at 3:00 PM at St. Andrew By the Sea United Methodist Church on Pope Ave. in Hilton Head. It will be a Festival of Hymns and Anthems for the Church Year. The event will include organ and brass music, soloists, handbells, tympani, other percussion instruments, hymns, anthems, bible readings and poems pertaining to the church year. Choir members from many churches will be participating. The choirs will be singing four different anthems and will be directed by various choir directors. A great deal of planning has gone into this event and should be spectacular. There will be a rehearsal from 1:30 to 2:30 before the program. If you are interested in participating please contact me at Our November meeting will be at Low Country Presbyterian Church. This is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. We will be enjoying music performed by strings, harpsichord and organ. This event will be on the evening of November 10th. Please put these dates on your calendar and pass the word to your friends. The planning committee has spent many hours putting together a year of programs that should enlighten your palette. Our Friday at Noon concerts will be at many different venues this next year. Stay tuned for those as well. Have a wonderful, relaxing and safe summer. Respectfully, Debby Graves Sub-Dean of the Low Country Chapter AGO
3 A Note from our Treasurer Many thanks to Gil Campbell for hosting the Low Country Chapter Annual Meeting and for providing Dudley Chicken for the main course. It was marvelous! Gil shares his recipe as follows: Marinade is equal parts of vegetable oil and soy sauce, a couple of teaspoons of horseradish, plus one to two cups of 7-Up, depending on quantity needed. Submerge chicken in the marinade overnight and cook it on grill. Sear it on high (500 degrees) one minute each side, and then cook it on lowest setting for 30 minutes +/-, turning once. The exact length of cooking time, to preserve moistness, depends on size and thickness of the breasts. After about 25 minutes I make a cut into a thicker part of one of the breasts. As soon as any pinkness disappears, take it off the grill. Low Country Chapter will produce a Directory & Yearbook for the upcoming fiscal year. Please update your member profile and substitute availability in ONCARD at If you do not remember your username or password, you can ask for it to be ed to you. Directory information will be taken from ONCARD, so please make sure your profile is up to date. Don't forget to press the SAVE button when you finish making changes. Also, the directory will include color pictures. Please a photo to Gary at grakestraw@hotmail.com. Since the photos will be thumbnails, a close-up face shot works best. Directories will be distributed at our September chapter meeting. Thank you in advance for your prompt attention. Respectfully submitted, Gary Rakestraw, Treasurer Please submit your news, events, comments, updates, interesting or funny stuff to: NEWSLETTER EDITOR Linda Hamilton liturgicalinda@hotmail.com. Please submit material for the next newsletter at least 5 days before the end of the month so that Pipings can be published by the 1 st! WEBMASTER Gary Rakestraw grakestraw@hotmail.com Our chapter website is lccago.org. Have you visited it lately?
4 A Note from our Secretary In addition to items already reported by our Treasurer, please note the following: 1. The Executive Board has approved an increased focus and additional funding for Publicity. We will be placing advertising in the Hilton Head Symphony Program, and the USCB Symphony Program. Each of these programs will be used for the entire season of these orchestras. Our advertisement will highlight the major programs our Chapter will be presenting during the coming year. In addition it will reference the Second Friday noontime recitals and refer readers to the Chapter website for information regarding upcoming recitals. In addition we plan to publicize our programs on Talk of the Town and Monty Jett s radio show. 2. During this coming year, starting in September 2017, the Second Friday recitals will occur in a variety of churches in Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort. Chapter members will perform, and we will also have two or more recitals by organ students from nearby colleges and universities. The names of artists, locations, etc. will be on the Chapter website. All of our publicity will direct the public to our website for this information. 3. Program highlights for : Second Friday Organ Recital by a visiting organ student on October 13. Church venue to be determined. Festival of Hymns & Anthems on October 15 at St. Andrew By the Sea Church in Hilton Head. The program handed out at this event will include an insert reviewing all our programs for Reformation Commemoration on November 10 at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton. Music will include organ, harpsichord and string quartet performances. Epiphany Party on January 6, 2018 at the home of Beth Corry in Bluffton.
