2 2 A Season of New Beginnings New Beginnings We concluded our season with beautiful songs of May and a fond farewell to our conductor of five years, John Weiss. Fortunate to have worked with talented conductors since our incorporation as the IWCC in 2000, we looked forward to discovering another talented individual interested in helping us travel our musical journey. You may wonder, how does an organization such as ours go about finding just the right person to take along our path? Like any business, we do all of the normal things like searches and interviews. Then we get creative. We invite our candidates to audition for us, each individual selecting repertoire and chamber choir, preparing us through weekly rehearsals, and finally the big event, leading us through a concert series. We are fortunate to have two talented candidates. Tonight we welcome our first candidate, Dr. Michael Murphy. The beautiful repertoire he selected honors the new beginnings of an exciting year for the chorale. As we have done for decades, we gather together each week to do what we love most to sing. We sing with fresh new faces and new approaches. We perform beloved holiday favorites in interesting and unique arrangements. We know that you will enjoy them as much as we have. Thank you for joining us as we embark on this journey of discoveries. b Janice O Toole, Vice President 905 SE Main Pullman, Washington (509)
3 Program Notes The 3 festival procession known as Personent Hodie is often associated with the Feast of the Holy Innocents (December 28), which commemorates the young boys slain by King Herod in his futile attempt to kill the infant Jesus. The origin of the text is difficult to trace but there are Latin sources with the text that date during the 12th century and German sources from the 14th century. The first printing occurred in 1582 from the source Piae Cantiones, a collection of medieval Latin songs that was intended for pupils of cathedral schools. The stately carol begins with youthful voices singing and praising Jesus who was brought forth from a virgin. The second stanza features the women (treble voices) telling of how Jesus was born wrapped in swaddling cloths and placed in a manger in a stable of beasts. The men majestically sing about the wise men bearing gifts in the third stanza and how they came bearing gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. The carol ends with the Gloria in excelsis Deo! (Glory to God in the highest). Lara Hoggard s ( ) setting of the carol is one of the most popular. During Hoggard s tenure of forty-one years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill he became a famous conductor, composer, arranger, and pedagogue across the United States. John Rutter, composer of Gloria and What Sweeter Music, was born in 1945 and read (studied) music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositional endeavors range from choral, orchestral and instrumental; he has co-edited many choral anthologies. From he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed a professional chamber choir, made popular through their many recordings, the Cambridge Singers. The extended work Gloria is a three-movement work that was commissioned in 1974 by the Voices of Mel Olson in Omaha, Nebraska. The composer, John Rutter, who conducted the work s premiere, described the work roughly emulating a traditional symphonic structure, : meaning the mood of the sections respectively follows an exalted, devotional and jubilant manner. The text is taken from the Gloria, the second section, of the Ordinary of the Mass, which in the liturgy follows the Kyrie. The familiar opening words, Gloria in excelsis Deo (Glory to God in the Highest) are those chronicled in the second chapter of Luke s Gospel where the angels proclaim the birth of Jesus. 4 4 Program Notes outer movements demonstrates his inheritance of the English choral tradition that is best seen in the works of his English predecessor William Walton ( ). The Chamber Choir begins their portion of the concert with three selections, arranged and edited by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw. The chorale Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light (Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht) comes from the second part of Johann Sebastian Bach s 1736 Christmas Oratorio. The carol Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella (Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) originated from the Provence region in France. First published in 1553 in France and translated into English in the 18th century. The carol was originally conceived not to be sung at Christmas, but rather to serve as dance music for the French nobility. The carol tells of two milkmaids, Jeanette and Isabella, who went to milk their cows in a manger in Bethlehem, only to find the baby Jesus sleeping in the hay. The two girls ran to the village to tell of the coming of Christ, and the townspeople came with their own torches to view the sight for themselves. Upon arriving at the manger, they had to keep quiet so little Jesus could enjoy his dreams. Even today in the Provence region, children dress up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, while singing the carol. The French tune for Masters in This Hall is another long piece associated with dance. It is unclear exactly when the tune came into the English folk tradition aside from the popular story that attributes Edmund Sedding with obtaining it from the organist at Chartre Cathedral. Regardless of its provenance, around 1860 William Morris put the text of the carol Master in this Hall to the tune, and ever since it has enjoyed extreme popularity. Born in Germany, Hassler went to Italy in 1584 to continue his studies, arriving in Venice during the zenith of the polychoral style of the Venetian school. While in Venice Hassler became friends with Giovanni Gabrieli and studied with Andrea Gabrieli, Giovanni s uncle. Returning to his native Germany Hassler carried the concertato style, the polychoral idea and the freely emotional expression of the Venetians into the musical culture of Germany, creating the one of the most important Baroque developments outside of Italy. The text for Dixit Maria is recounted in Luke 1: The angel Gabriel greets the Virgin Mary and explains that she will conceive and bring forth a son and call him Jesus. After questioning how this is to be since she is a virgin, she expresses her complete surrender in faith to God s will. Erev Shel Shoshanim is a popular Israeli folksong. Although the text is taken mainly from the Song of Songs, the original setting was created by Moshe Dor and Josef Hadar in The song s popularity grew with recordings by Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba in the 1960s. This sensitive setting by Jack Klebanow capitalizes on the inherent fluid and lyrical melody. In this setting Klebanow sought to create an open feeling of the desert night while the scent of roses drifts in the cool air. The popular Ukrainian carol Carol of the Bells is a choral work originally composed by Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. A four-note motif is used throughout the piece that serves as an ostinato. Tradition has it the four-note motif was taken from an ancient pagan Ukrainian New Year s chant known as Shchedryk. In its present form, the composition was premiered in December 1916 by students of Kiev University and was introduced to Western audiences by the Ukrainian National Chorus during its concert tour of Europe and the Americas. It premiered in the United States on October 5, 1921 at Carnegie Hall Asian Imported Furniture & Antiques www. m2rcopoloimports.biz D2hlin Enterprises, Inc.
5 Program Notes 5 and was later adapted in the 1930s in English by Peter Wilhousky. The tune of Deck the Hall is that of an old Welsh air, first found in a musical manuscript by Welsh harpist John Parry Ddall (c ), but is undoubtedly much older than that. The composition is still popular as a dance tune in Wales and was published in the 1784 and 1794 editions of the harpist Edward Jones s Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards. Poet John Ceiriog Hughes wrote the first published lyrics for the piece in Welsh, titling it Nos Galan ( New Year s Eve ). A middle verse was later added by folk singers. In the eighteenth century the tune spread widely, with Mozart using it in a piano and violin concerto. This unaccompanied arrangement by the renowned British choral conductor, organist and composer Sir David Willcocks (b. 1919) requires the choir to literally portray the text with various articulations and attitudes of hysterics and teasing. Two movements from Antonio Lucio Vivaldi s Gloria begin the concert after intermission. While Vivaldi ( ) composed several Gloria settings, it is his Gloria RV 589 that is most famous. This setting is so well known that it is simply referred to as Vivaldi s Gloria. Vivaldi was a Venetian priest who was commonly referred to as il Prete Rosso (the Red Priest) because of his striking red beard. Not not only was he a successful composer, but he also was known for his virtuoso abilities on the violin. The opening Gloria in excelsis is noted for its ritornello of leaping octaves and busy figuration. The choral voices make their declaration of Glory to God in the highest in homophonic declamation. The characteristic and regal dotted rhythms of the French Baroque dominate the movement Domine Fili unigenite, perhaps as to express Christ s deity as Lord, the only begotten Son. Even though Johann Sebastian Bach s ( ) mark on Western Music far eclipses Antonio Vivaldi, Vivaldi was highly influential on the young Bach. While in Weimar, at the age of 28, Bach became acquainted with Vivaldi s music and learned, among other things, how to begin a composition with a dramatic and characteristic theme. This combined with Bach s already innate abilities for music continuity and synthesis made many of his compositions monumental works. 6 6 Program Notes Sicut locutus est, the 11th movement in the Magnificat in D major (BWV 243), relates the Old Testament promise made to Abraham to send a Savior to Israel. No other form could express the old covenant better than the traditional choral fugue, where every voice sings the theme, and which by Bach s time was a stylistically old method of setting vocal music. Likewise, in Sicut locutus est Bach employs the older texture style of five-voices which was prevalent in the century before Bach s life. In his choral setting of What Sweeter Music by the seventeenth century British poet Robert Herrick, John Rutter strikes a balance between text depiction and convincing musical form and flow, creating his characteristic synergy of sung and uttered image. Composed for Stephen Cleobury and the renowned Choir of King s College at Cambridge and published in 1988, the piece draws on the English tradition of lush, sonorous vocal textures even as it assumes a contemporary, even vaguely pop-inflected, sound. This is derived in part from a certain flexibility in the unfolding of the melodic line, which tempers the regularity of an underlying eighth-note pulse with occasional triplet pick-up notes and syncopations. There is also a poignancy to the gentle angularity of the line and the manner in which it swells in expanding arcs until, at the words Awake the voice, the smooth triplets are replaced by a stately dotted rhythm and a sudden octave leap upward. Rutter deploys his vocal forces carefully, rendering the first stanza in soprano unison; it then gives over to the unison men s lower range in the dark and dull night of the next phrase, which in turn expands to a shimmering duet in thirds as the darkness clears. Finally, as December turns to May, there are unexpectedly sunny modulations to A major, then D flat major. This sets up the central image of the poem: a contrast between the cold of the winter season and the renewal of nature and spirit symbolized by Christmas and the Holy Nativity. Rutter s compositional skill heightens the moment at the crux of a poetic metaphor. This is especially true through sweeping, unexpected modulations, as happens here when the fabled search for lodging becomes an invitation for redemption ( The nobler part of all the house here is the heart ), and the texture moves rapidly from unison to duet to full harmony while making a stunning shift to B flat major. This climax then peacefully settles back into the home key of G flat major for the return of the opening lines, which bring the piece to a close. a Michael Murphy

13 Chorale Member Profile Erol Barbut (Tenor I) has been an important member of the Chorale and Chamber Choir s tenor section since the Chorale had its first beginnings in Glenn Lockery s Friends of Music group in the early 1970s. Erol credits his mother, a trained pianist, as the source of his passion for music, saying that she accompanied her housework by singing the works of Strauss and other composers. Erol grew up in Ankara, Turkey, and his life represents a mix of cultures: his father was from Istanbul and contributed Sepharadic Jewish culture; his mother was from Vienna, Austria, and brought European musical culture; and his own adult life has been spent in the United States. Erol arrived in Moscow in 1967, after having completed his college and graduate education in California, and he taught math at the University of Idaho until his retirement in Although Erol continues to teach math part-time at WSU, in the past few years he and wife Alice have been able to follow their passion for travel and culture through trips to visit family and friends in France, Switzerland, Japan, Thailand, and Hawaii. Musically, Erol most enjoys singing classical, baroque, and Italian renaissance music. The Chorale, for Erol, is a wonderful outlet for singing and for becoming acquainted with a wide range of music. Among the high points of his years with the Chorale have been two trips to Eisenstadt, Austria, and singing Mahler s Ninth Symphony. 13 Hill s Valley Floral and gifts Fresh, fragrant, and always a Favorite Lisa & David Lawrence 812 Main Street, Lewiston, Idaho

Poster Art, Notecards & the Garden Party Our season poster features a photograph taken by Shaun & Jill Freuden during the Messiah concerts a few years ago. If you attended a performance you may find yourself on the poster! Jill set up the photo in advance, the chorale posed for a few moments, and Shaun snapped several photos. We took this photo at the request of Paul Dorpat, author of Washington Now and Then, a pictorial view of Washington state comparing historical photos with their modern counterparts. While this photo did not make the cut, you will find a charming shot of the choir posing outside St. Boniface in the snow in it s place. The book is quite fascinating and was recently spotted at Costco, a great Christmas present for that historian you love. On the subject of Christmas presents, have you checked out the chorale notecards? A great buy at just $5 for five, our notecards make great gifts any time of the year. We offer notecards on several themes, a Poster Art Series, the Wreath Series, and latest in the lineup, a lovely notecard featuring the art from our Garden Party invitations. Donor and advertisers spending $100 or more last season were invited to the first annual Garden Party this August at Living In The Garden, north of Pullman.
