6 6 Chorale Member Profile Ma tt Kelly (Bass I and Chamber soloist) is new both to the Chorale and to the Palouse this year, having moved from Rochester, Michigan, this past summer to become a hall director on the WSU campus and to pursue a master s degree in Higher Education Administration. Matt graduated this past year from Oakland University in Rochester, where he majored in music with a concentration in voice. At Oakland he sang in the university s auditioned choir, a small men s a capella ensemble, the opera workshop, and the symphony chorale all of which allowed him to sing a rich diversity of musical styles in many languages. In summer 2009, Matt toured with Oakland s choirs in Texas. Matt s experience with choral music stems from age seven when he began singing in a folk group with his dad at the family s Roman Catholic church, and he developed that interest with continued singing in church, school choirs, and musicals. In high school Matt had the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall with a youth choir under the direction of Moses Hogan, who ranks among his favorite composers; other favorite composers include Puccini, Stephen Schwartz, Aaron Copland, and Eric Whitacre. Matt currently lives with 145 undergraduate men in Waller Hall, and he reports that, aside from music, his major interests are reading, photography, conversation, and random trivia. (Did you know there are 118 ridges on the edge of a dime? He does.) Elena Panchenko, Accompanist E lena Panchenko is originally from Ukraine and studied at the Moscow Conservatory where she earned her degree in piano performance, music history and music theory. She served as the Musical Director of the Penn State Opera for four years and performed the debut of two new operas, including Mrs. Satan, an opera about the life of the first woman presidential candidate, Victoria Woodhall. Working extensively as an accompanist and church musician, Elena has performed with groups as varied as a children s dance group to such well-known musicians as Francis Orval and David Shifrin, clarinetist and Music Director of Chamber Music at the Lincoln Center. In addition to Elena s duties with the chorale, she is also the Music Director at St. James Episcopal Church in Pullman. Elena s family includes her husband, Alex, WSU Math Professor and former Ukrainian rock star (as is Elena); her son Ivan, a student at UW; and their dog, Tasha.

7 Val Samuel, Our Poster Artist This season s poster art was created by local artist, Val Samuel, a Detroit native who fell under the spell of Idaho and Montana s scenic beauty when she came west after high school to work at Yellowstone. Val says that the beauty of nature has captured my heart and my art, and she often draws on her experiences in the backwoods as inspiration. That experience includes time living in Bonners Ferry, Priest Lake, and the Salmon River wilderness area where hot and cold running water meant the hot spring and creek next to the cabin! Val now splits her time between property in Priest Lake and her apartment in Moscow; and it was a trip northward to Priest Lake in August that inspired Val s poster art, which she created using pencil, watercolors, pen and inks. Known best for realistic pen and ink art of wildlife subjects, Val also enjoys dabbling in abstract art in a variety of media from the more traditional oils, acrylics, and watercolors to less traditional petrified wood, rocks, and tree fungi. The Chorale is delighted to have her vibrant take on music in the Palouse represent us this season! Holiday Wreaths David Spencer s Holiday Wreaths For many years Chorale bass, David Spencer, has created beautiful holiday wreaths as a fundraiser for the Chorale. Each season Dave carefully tends his gardens and nurtures greens, berries, flowers, and other natural materials to decorate his creations. Each wreath is handmade by Dave with painstaking care and an eye for aesthetics and durability. Your holiday wreath will last until the spring if you hang it outside. Wreaths are still just $35. If you would like a wreath call Dave at: or attend the Wreath Open House Sunday, November 29 from 1-5pm David Spencer s Greenhouse 201 Harms Road, Pullman, Washington Dave lives south of Pullman across the street from the Ford dealership. His home & greenhouse are the last house on the right before the intersection of Grand Avenue and the Highway 195 interchange. The greenhouse is on the right side of the driveway attached to the barn. 7
