2 Program Notes This evening s concert is a compilation of operetta and musical theatre selections, designed to introduce the audience to exciting music from these genres while highlighting some of the talented solo singers within the chorale. The opening two selections are representative of the nearly one hundred light opera works written by Jacques Offenbach in Paris in the later 1800s. Although the operetta La jolie Parfumeuse is rarely performed, Neighbors Chorus, originally written in French, has become a favorite in choral literature. Les Contes d Hoffmann is one of Offenbach s most well known works. Belle Nuit is a lovely duet from this opera, which has been arranged for a women s chorus. The scene takes place along the Grand Canal in Venice and the singers expound upon the beautiful night, oh night of love. The popularity of Offenbach s light and frothy operettas inspired other composers to develop this art form. In Vienna, Johann Strauss was encouraged to develop operetta with a Viennese flavor. Often known as The Waltz King, Strauss included a lot of dance elements into the form, along with a hedonistic flair. His most famous operetta, Die Fledermaus, was composed in After many hilarious plot twists, all of the misunderstandings are blamed on the champagne and everyone is forgiven for their brief infidelities. An evening of operetta would not be complete without at least one selection by the great English team of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Composing at the same time as Offenbach and Strauss, they wrote fifteen operettas together, each one as brilliantly witty as the next. An Irish-American composer, Victor Herbert arrived in New York in 1886 with his wife, Theresa. While she sang at the Metropolitan Opera, Herbert played cello in the orchestra. His reputation developed, however, as a highly successful composer of many tuneful and charming operettas. Some of his music was made popular through film adaptations of his works, such as Naughty Marietta with Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. The second half of the concert highlights three of the most important figures in musical theatre today. Andrew Lloyd Webber has written such incredible awardwinning shows as Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Starlight Express, Song and Dance, and of course, The Phantom of the Opera. The song Masquerade fills the stage with a pageantry of cast members in colorful costumes and masks, allowing the Phantom to blend in with the crowd and create terror. Unexpected Song is a beautiful ballad from Song and Dance, which was originally sung by Bernadette Peters in the Broadway production. Stephen Flaherty, composer of Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once On This Island, and Seussical, received three Tony Awards in 1998 for his musical based on E.L Doctorow s powerful novel, Ragtime. The show weaves the stories of three families and their experiences in America at the turn of the century. One family is from the affluent society of New Rochelle, while the Decagon Devices, Inc. Using music from these different cultures, Flaherty beautifully illustrates the contradictions evident in that time, while pointing to the timeless nature of those struggles. One of the leading forces in contemporary musical theatre is Stephen Sondheim. His long list of successes on Broadway includes Sweeney Todd,, Passion, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, Follies, A Funny Program Notes Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Sunday in the Park with George. It would be impossible to describe the innovative and artistically creative plot lines for each of the shows represented in tonight s concert. It is our hope that you will find within this choral celebration, as with the entire evening s selections, something that moves you to further investigate the wonderful world of operetta and musical theatre.
