3 Exhibitions Exhibitions Medieval Ljubljana 15 Nov -2 May 2018, City Museum of Ljubljana More than 1000 years old wooden vessel challenges our current perspective on the emergence of medieval Ljubljana; leather products that make visiting an medieval shoemaking workshop worthwhile; the grave of a knight that attests to the prestige of the city at the time of the Turkish incursions. Learn about recent discoveries made in Ljubljana s city centre and get firsthand experience of the stories that have been around for more than 500 years. Were the Middle Ages really as dark as we imagine them today? Who ruled the city of the three market towns united by the city walls into one medieval city? How is it that not even the ferocious Turkish incursions could weaken the city walls? And, finally, where does the name Ljubljana come from? Guided tours in English on Sundays at 16:30 Open: 10:00-18:00, Thursdays 10:00-21:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan. Karlin ( ), globetrotter, writer, amateur explorer, polyglot and theosophist, travelled all over the world between 1919 and She journeyed alone, for eight uninterrupted years, and earned her own livelihood en route. According to the exhibition curator, the nature of her travels ranks Alma among the greatest travellers of all time. Commemorating the 90 th anniversary of Alma s return from her globetrotting, the exhibition features the objects that Alma collected on her travels and had dispatched home. Tugomir Šušnik, solo exhibition 30 Nov - 21 Jan, City Art Gallery of Ljubljana - MGML Tugomir Šušnik is marked by his expansive and colourful abstract expressionist palette. This is why he is classified in the Abstract Colourism movement, which sprung into existence in the Slovenian art scene in the 1970s, as a reaction to the post-war American abstraction. For his work he received numerous awards, among them also the Župančič Award of the City of Ljubljana, the Prešeren Fund Award and the Rihard Jakopič Award for his oeuvre. Open: 11:00-19:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan. Boris Jesih: Connections 30 Nov Mar 2018, International Centre of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana Boris Jesih (1943) established himself as an artist at the end of the 1960s as part of the expressive figuration circle of painters. Under the influence of pop art, he responded to the characteristics of the spirit of the time with his geometric transformation of everyday objects, later also turning predominantly to landscape. As a printmaker, he excels in the techniques of relief printing and flat printing, with superior results in colour lithography. As a prize winner of the 13th International Biennial of Graphic Arts in 1979 (special prize for a young artist), he attracted attention with his series of lithographs, a set of which is part of the MGLC collection. Beside the lithographs, the retrospective exhibition also presents drawings, paintings and photographs, which highlight the connections between his creative process and his works. Open: 10:00-18:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan. Zoran Mušič ( ) Permanent exhibition at the National Gallery Zoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana s National Gallery displays the world s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič s work, which explores the entire range of the famous artist s painting techniques. Open: 10:00-18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan. Plečnik Collection The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention. Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). A group may be a maximum of seven persons. Open: 10:00-18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Today, Stanko Kristl is considered one of the most prominent Slovenian architects, a man whose work has provoked and inspired local and international publics alike, both during the process of their creation and up to the present day. As an architect in the broadest sense of the term, Stanko Kristl uses his projects and research work to pose, at every opportunity, the fundamental question of architecture: What is architecture in relation to human? People and their perception of space is a key theme in his work, one that has left a significant mark on architect Kristl s design research approach. Open: 10:00-18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Stanko Kristl, Architect: Humanity and Space 19 Dec May 2018, MAO -Museum of Architecture and Design
