Colossians)3:16)ESV) $ One$of$the$hardest$things$to$do$in$contemporary$or$modern$worship$music$is$ to$sing$the$psalms.$the$nature$of$hebrew$poetry$does$not$lend$itself$to$popular$ western$musical$styles.$by$and$large,$the$church$has$settled$for$songs$inspired$by$the$ psalms.$there$are,$however,$two$major$traditions$of$psalm$singing$that$have$come$ down$to$us$from$history$that$are$still$being$used$today:$chant$and$metrical$psalms.$ Unless$a$congregation$is$firmly$rooted$in$a$tradition$that$regularly$chants$the$psalms$ or$is$heavily$invested$in$the$ancientmfuture$movement,$chanting$the$psalms$is$pretty$ much$a$nonstarter$in$spite$of$the$fact$that$chant$will$accommodate$any$translation$of$ the$psalms$desired.$while$there$is$a$movement$to$return$to$the$singing$of$metrical$ psalms$in$certain$corners$of$the$church,$its$practical$implementation$is$dependent$ upon$the$congregation$knowing$a$great$number$of$hymns$in$order$to$be$successful.$ Neither$of$these$prerequisites$ $a$church$with$an$ancientmfuture$mindset$or$a$broad$ knowledge$of$hymnody$ $are$found$in$the$congregation$i$serve.$ Intersect$is$a$ministry$of$First$Baptist$Church$of$Tempe,$Arizona.$It$is$the$ most$modern$of$our$four$sunday$morning$services.$a$normal$worship$service$will$ see$us$singing$songs$from$chris$tomlin,$matt$redman,$matt$maher,$hillsong,$jesus$ Culture,$Rend$Collective,$and$host$of$other$popular$worship$artists.$In$May$of$2016,$ we$started$a$long$sermon$series$in$the$book$of$psalms.$the$document$you$are$now$ reading$is$the$product$of$a$conviction$that$we$should$be$singing$the$psalms$in$ addition$to$preaching$them.$the$sermon$series$ran$until$palm$sunday,$2018.$now$ that$the$series$has$come$to$an$end,$i$wanted$to$compile$the$work$we$have$done$so$ that$you,$whether$you$are$someone$who$wants$to$sing$the$psalms$in$your$own$ private$worship$or$a$worship$leader$considering$introducing$psalm$singing$to$your$ congregation,$might$have$some$tools$at$your$disposal.$we$are$continuing$to$sing$ these$psalms$when$we$can$match$them$with$our$sermon$text$and$are$also$ continuing$to$create$new$psalmmsongs.$those$new$songs$will$periodically$be$added$ to$this$book.$ The$method$in$which$these$psalmMsongs$were$created$is$similar$to$the$way$ that$metrical$psalms$work$ $matching$each$psalm$with$a$familiar$worship$song.$in$ fact$my$earliest$attempts$mimicked$metrical$psalms$in$every$way,$and$the$choice$of$ songs$reflects$that.$many$are$updated$versions$of$hymns$( Amazing$Grace $and$ Cornerstone )$or$have$a$hymnmlike$structure$( Before$the$Throne$of$God$Above $ and$ How$Deep$the$Father s$love$for$us ).$As$the$series$moved$forward,$I$moved$ away$from$that$model$as$it$left$us$with$very$little$variety$in$the$songs$we$were$using.$ By$the$end$of$the$series,$I$was$creating$my$own$lyrics$based$off$of$multiple$ translations$of$the$psalms$and$fitting$them$to$match$tunes$that$reflected$the$overall$ tone$of$the$psalm.$ v

6 I$am$greatly$indebted$to$Timothy$and$Julie$Tennent$and$their$work$with$the$ Seedbed$Psalter.$It$is$a$topMnotch$metrical$psalter$in$modern$English$that$can$be$ found$at$ psalms$were$extremely$helpful$and$influential$in$creating$our$own$versions.$as$such,$ one$or$both$of$their$names$can$be$found$on$nearly$all$of$our$psalmmsongs.$$ $ What s$in$this$book$ $ The$songs$in$this$book$are$the$ones$that$we$actually$sang$during$the$sermon$ series$and$include$the$good,$the$bad,$and$everything$else.$if$the$division$of$the$ individual$psalms$seems$random$at$points$that$is$because$i$was$trying$match$the$ sermon$text$for$a$given$sunday.$the$psalmmsongs$are$listed$by$psalm$number$and$ the$worship$song$that$it$has$been$matched$with$is$contained$in$parenthesis.$for$ example,$ Psalm$51:1M9$(Amazing$Grace$ $My$Chains$Are$Gone). $For$song$titles$that$ originally$included$parenthesis,$i$have$opted$to$note$that$by$a$dash,$as$in$the$title$ above.$$ Because$the$psalmMsongs$were$intended$to$match$the$sermon$text$there$are$ instances$where$it$was$preferable$to$create$a$highlights$version$of$the$psalm$that$ gave$an$overall$sense$of$the$text.$these$are$noted$in$the$titles,$i.e.$ Psalm$9$(Fierce)$ highlights. $ Because$this$book$is$intended$to$be$used$by$regular$Christians$as$well$as$ worship$leaders$and$pastors,$i$have$refrained$from$listing$every$person$credited$ with$writing$the$worship$songs$that$were$used$as$vehicles$for$the$psalms.$instead,$i$ have$opted$to$list$the$recording$artist/band$most$associated$with$the$song,$or$whose$ version$i$based$the$psalmmsong$on.$ Because$I$am$not$licensed$to$distribute$actual$music,$this$book$contains$no$ melody$lines,$chords,$or$key$signatures.$ccli$numbers$have$been$provided$so$that$ those$who$have$access$to$songselect$can$quickly$find$that$information.$for$everyone$ else,$a$simple$internet$search$for$the$song$title$and$artist$name$should$provide$you$ with$everything$you$need$to$sing/play$any$of$these$songs.$ I$have$included$the$flow$of$each$song$as$we$originally$did$them.$I$will$not$say$ that$we$always$did$it$the$best$way,$but$we$did$our$best$to$learn$from$our$mistakes.$ Those$mistakes$are$included$so$that$you$might$profit$from$them$as$well.$ $ How$to$Use$This$Book$ $ It$is$my$hope$that$this$book$will$be$one$of$two$things$for$you.$First,$is$that$it$ might$help$you$incorporate$the$singing$of$the$psalms$in$your$personal$worship.$ Whether$it s$your$personal$devotions,$your$family,$or$small$group$the$psalms$enrich$ our$experience$of$god.$the$psalms$are$full$of$things$that$we$feel$but$would$never$say$ aloud$in$a$private$prayer$let$alone$a$public$one$and$that$has$been$my$favorite$thing$ about$singing$them.$the$fact$that$there$are$psalms$about$hiding$from$god,$striking$ our$enemies$on$the$jaw,$and$throwing$bad$leaders$off$of$cliffs$(yes,$these$are$all$in$ this$book)$is$a$huge$encouragement.$i$don t$think$their$inclusion$in$the$psalms$ sanctifies$those$thoughts$or$actions,$but$it$does$sanction$us$to$bring$those$things$ before$the$lord.$he$is$not$surprised$by$our$thoughts$and$he$welcomes$us$to$bring$ our$concerns$before$him$ $no$matter$how$extreme.$the$psalms$allow$us$to$worship$ God$as$we$are$but$in$the$light$of$who$he$is.$ vi

7 $ All$of$those$things$are$still$true$in$corporate$worship$but$amplified$a$bit$ more.$my$second$reason$for$compiling$this$book$is$to$give$a$resource$to$worship$ leaders$and$pastors$who$are$considering$introducing$psalm$singing$in$their$ congregations.$starting$from$scratch$is$a$major$uphill$struggle.$now$you ve$got$52$ psalmmsongs$ready$to$go$(though$some$are$admittedly$better$than$others).$if,$like$ me,$you$don t$come$from$a$tradition$that$normally$sings$the$psalms,$my$ recommendation$is$to$do$a$sermon$series$on$the$psalms$in$which$the$preaching$ pastor$talks$about$the$importance$of$singing$the$psalms$and$then$give$folks$the$ opportunity$to$try$it.$after$a$four$or$five$week$trial,$get$some$feedback$from$your$ congregation$and$make$a$decision$about$moving$forward.$$ $ In$order$to$help$both$the$individual$user$and$the$church$leader,$my$team$and$ I$are$working$on$creating$demos$for$each$of$these$songs.$That$way,$you$can$hear$the$ way$that$the$lyrics$and$the$music$fit$together$and$get$a$sense$of$what$we$have$done$ to$help$make$the$effort$an$overall$success.$as$these$demos$are$completed$they$will$ be$available$on$my$website$at$ $ As$a$final$note,$there$is$no$charge$for$this$book.$Please$feel$free$to$give$it$to$ anyone$you$think$might$be$interested$in$it.$i$do,$however,$have$one$request.$if$you$ actually$use$this$information$in$your$personal$worship$or$implement$it$in$your$ congregation,$please$drop$by$the$website$and$let$me$know$about$your$experience$of$ singing$the$psalms.$it$is$always$encouraging$to$hear$what$god$is$doing$in$other$ areas.$ $ May$the$Lord$bless$you$all$and$your$efforts$to$make$his$praise$glorious.$ $ Douglas$Bell$ April$2018$ vii
