We are delighted to celebrate our 20th anniversary as Orchestra in Residence at De Montfort Hall. Over two decades the Philharmonia has made a second home in Leicester and we continue to bring the best of our work to the city. Over seven concerts in 2016/17 the Orchestra performs an expansive range of repertoire. Appropriately for a venue in the heart of the country, English music features strongly across two concerts (30 Nov and 22 Apr) with pieces by Vaughan Williams, Walton, Elgar and Holst. 1 2 Once again the Philharmonia collaborates with both major international artists and emerging talent, as in the opening concert of the season (18 Oct), in which the great Russian maestro Yuri Temirkanov conducts Tchaikovsky s Fifth Symphony and young Armenian virtuoso violinist Sergey Khachatryan performs Sibelius s Violin Concerto. Elsewhere Philharmonia at the Movies returns with a John Barry evening and pre-concert talks series offers new perspectives on the music performed. We remain ever grateful to Leicester City Council and the many supporters who continue to make possible the work the Philharmonia brings to De Montfort Hall and the city s wider communities. In the first half, the outstanding Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan performs one of the most virtuosic violin concertos in the repertory, by Jean Sibelius. An evening of stirring themes. The famous horn calls of Sibelius s Fifth Symphony were inspired by swans flying overhead. The quiet, dignified opening of Brahms s Violin Concerto rises up into a swelling theme, setting the tone of the work s intimate grandness. The concerto is performed by Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, who has been described by The Guardian as a passionate, heart-on-sleeve player. LORD MAYOR S CONCERT 6:15pm, pre-concert talk (FREE Entry) An introduction to the evening s programme Leicester_brochure_v6.indd 4-5 Opening with Vaughan Williams s lush and unmistakably British Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, this programme moves on to Vaughan Williams s teacher, Ravel, whose expansive Piano Concerto in G is performed by Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi. Philharmonia at the Movies returns with the music of legendary Hollywood composer John Barry, who won five Oscars throughout a career creating some of the most memorable movie music in history, beginning with his scores to numerous Bond films and then on to Oscar-winning movies such as Dances with Wolves. Holst took his inspiration from the astrological rather than the astronomical, journeying through Mars, the apocalyptic Bringer of War ; a tranquil Venus; Mercury s winged messenger; Jupiter, the stately Bringer of Jollity ; Saturn s old age, Uranus The Magician and finally, a dreamy Neptune, The Mystic. 7 ORCHESTRA UNWRAPPED SUPPORTERS Since 2011, the Philharmonia Orchestra has performed for over 15,500 school children aged 7 11 in Leicester. The Orchestra Unwrapped concerts provide a dynamic opportunity for children from many different cultural backgrounds and educational circumstances to hear a world-class orchestra on their own doorstep, in a specially presented and participatory concert designed to provide an experience that is both fun and educational, opening up the world of the orchestra to a new generation. Orchestra Unwrapped also supports primary school classroom teachers through the delivery of teacher training sessions and resource packs, equipping participating schools with the tools to enhance children s understanding, appreciation, enjoyment and learning.
