2 2018 / 19 Page 3 WELCOME to the Philharmonia Orchestra s 2018/19 season at Leicester s De Montfort Hall. Bringing together brilliant artists with some of the greatest music ever written, there is something for everyone to be thrilled, inspired or challenged by in seven concerts and free talks. In his second season as Principal Guest Conductor, Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts three Strauss masterpieces, including his Four Last Songs performed by star soprano Sophie Bevan. We are proud to showcase some of our most distinctive artists at our Leicester residency, including violinist Viktoria Mullova who brings a specially curated programme of Pärt and Sibelius, and Nicola Benedetti, who performs Bruch s First Violin Concerto in the closing concert of the season. 1 2 Our Philharmonia at the Movies series returns with an evening dedicated to Steven Spielberg and for the first time, we perform music picked by you, the audience, to open our 2018/19 season. Thank you to all our partners in Leicester whose support makes the season possible. We look forward to welcoming you. 3 2018 / 19 Page 5 Wednesday 5 December 2018, 7.30pm SANTTU-MATIAS ROUVALI CONDUCTS STRAUSS THE DMU CHANCELLOR S CONCERT Santtu-Matias Rouvali conductor Sophie Bevan soprano Saturday 19 January 2019, 7.30pm Friday 26 October 2018, 7.30pm RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: SCHEHERAZADE THE LORD MAYOR S CONCERT 1 Clemens Schuldt conductor Kit Armstrong piano AUDIENCE VOTE* BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade Conductor Clemens Schuldt opens the season with a piece chosen by you, the audience, and Beethoven s mighty Emperor Concerto. Then it s time to set sail on Sinbad s ship as we hear Scheherazade s tales from the Arabian Nights, told in music by Rimsky-Korsakov. One of his most glittering pieces, Scheherazade sweeps us along on a wave of lush sound, from the intimacy of The Young Prince and Young Princess, to the bold, bright colours of Festival of Baghdad. Friday 16 November 2018, 7.30pm SPIELBERG IN CONCERT Anthony Weeden conductor Programme to include music from: Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Back to the Future, Memoirs of a Geisha, War Horse, Indiana Jones, among many more. "I don't dream at night, I dream all day; I dream for a living" Steven Spielberg An evening dedicated to the extraordinary cinematic achievements of director Steven Spielberg. The concert features music from Spielberg's long-time collaborator John Williams, including the scores to Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, as well as music from Alan Silvestri s Back to the Future. STRAUSS Suite, Der Rosenkavalier STRAUSS Four Last Songs STRAUSS An Alpine Symphony Our Principal Guest Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali brings his imaginative, often spectacular musicality (LA Times) to three Strauss masterpieces. He opens with Der Rosenkavalier, an opera so successful that special trains ran from Berlin to Dresden to whisk audiences to its opening run, followed by Four Last Songs performed by acclaimed British soprano Sophie Bevan. Inspired by an expedition Strauss took part in aged 15, the 125-player strong An Alpine Symphony vividly depicts dawn, rivers and meadows; a hunting party in the distance; the struggles of the climbers and triumph when they reach the summit; a storm as they descend; and the peaceful return of night. 6.15pm, De Montfort Hall Insights Talk (FREE, no ticket required) Santtu-Matias Rouvali in conversation with a Philharmonia panel. Principal Partner ENGLISH FANTASIA Martyn Brabbins conductor Laurent Ben Slimane bass clarinet ELGAR Introduction and Allegro GEOFFREY GORDON Prometheus, Concerto for Bass Clarinet and Orchestra VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis BRITTEN The Young Person s Guide to the Orchestra Instantly popular since its premiere in 1946, The Young Person s Guide to the Orchestra introduces the instruments of the orchestra one by one with a sprightly tune. Martyn Brabbins conducts two English classics for string orchestra: Elgar's lively Introduction and Allegro and Vaughan Williams's Romantic masterpiece, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. In between, hear the premiere of a new bass clarinet concerto inspired by Ancient Greek legend, by American composer and winner of the Aaron Copland Award, Geoffrey Gordon. *Go to philharmonia.co.uk/audiencevote to vote for your concert opener This concert is supported by 1: Sophie Bevan Sussie Ahlburg

Along the way, expect a beautiful melody evoking Carmen, circus-inspired spectacle, and majestic brass chords. But beyond the Soviet heroism lies something more: framed by the musical drama lies the hushed religious contemplation of the third movement, the tender soul of the symphony that moved the audience to tears at its 1937 premiere. Before, Alina Pogostkina performs Brahms s Violin Concerto, which features one of the most profound melodies ever written for violin. 6.15pm, De Montfort Hall Insights Talk (FREE, no ticket required) Xian Zhang in conversation with John Florance. The composer himself called it the best thing I have composed or will ever compose, and to many listeners it encompasses hope and despair, joy and heartbreak, life and death. At the heart of the concert there is a unique opportunity to hear a specially-curated selection of pieces chosen and performed by internationally-acclaimed violinist Viktoria Mullova, who brings her exceptional musicianship to works by Jean Sibelius and contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. 2 Saturday 1 June 2019, 7.30pm TCHAIKOVSKY & BRUCH Pablo Heras-Casado conductor Nicola Benedetti violin MENDELSSOHN Overture, The Hebrides BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 composer s life: between the strident fate fanfare of the opening bars and the fiery energy of the finale come a profusion of emotions expressed in memorable melodies and vivid orchestral textures. 6.15pm, De Montfort Hall Insights Talk (FREE, no ticket required) Pablo Heras-Casado in conversation with John Florance. 1 1: Xian Zhang Benjamin Ealovega 2: Nicola Benedetti Simon Fowler A chance to hear Bruch s impassioned First Violin Concerto performed by superstar violinist Nicola Benedetti, recently described as a woman luminous with purpose, whose unfolding musical intelligence and technical artistry surge from every note (The Economist).
