3 Translation Though it is a good thing to have a rich vocabulary, it is not a good thing to abuse that vocabulary by writing verbose, abstruse, sesquipedalian sentences. Those who overuse their vocabularies often do so at the expense of clarity. Translate the following showy, ponderous passage into graceful, direct English. Do not use slang, but do use words that seem familiar and comfortable. STANDING BEFORE the translucent stained glass window, the loquacious conductor, knowing that sotto voce remarks were not his forte, declaimed with acerbity against the cacophony of the orchestra s fortissimo passage, impugning the musicians integrity, accusing them of egocentric perfidy because of their performance of the sacrosanct Fifth Symphony. 5 Synthesis We can perambulate in its physical sense, as to perambulate through a park. But we can also use perambulate in a metaphorical sense. How many different experiences can you think of that might be metaphorically described by the verb perambulate. After you have made your list, choose the one you personally deplore most, and explain the reasons for your choice.
