1 School Invitation Sounds of Poole Sounds of Poole is an inspirational learning opportunity and music technology focused project, devised by SoundStorm Music Education Hub in partnership with Light Up Poole Festival About Light Up Poole Light Up Poole is a unique digital Light Art Festival aiming to transform Poole s Town Centre after dark on 15th 17th February 2018 between 6pm and 10pm. The artistic programme is diverse, through combining light art and digital installations with interactive engagement activities in partnership with leading cultural organisations its designed to inspire, delight and emotionally resonate with local communities and out of season visitors. As darkness falls, using the theme Identity, Poole will tell its story as a narrative seen through the eyes of artist s using projections, interactive light and sound. A programme of talks will provide opportunities to share new ways of thinking demonstrating the many different processes behind creative minds.

2 Festival Theme Identity is often concerned with the questions: Who are you? What does it mean to be you? Identity relates to our basic values that dictate the choices we make about relationships, careers, and lifestyle. These choices reflect who we are and what we value. Do we internalize the values of dominant culture and our parents rather than choose our own identity? The challenge to participants is to reinvent themselves as artists and technologists and consider the town of Poole as their main inspiration, highlighting its diverse identity of urban, maritime, and heritage. The festival challenges artists to breathe new life into the town from The Lighthouse, Poole overlooking Falkland Square to Poole Quayside. What is Sounds of Poole? Sounds of Poole is an inspirational learning opportunity and music technology focused project, devised by SoundStorm Music Education Hub in partnership with Light Up Poole Festival. Through two in- school workshops led by sound artist Jon Adams, students will learn how to arrange, record and create their own album entitled Sounds of Poole, then share export and upload their work to Light Up Poole s SoundCloud. The album will be played throughout the 3- night festival between 6:00pm and 10:00pm in the Fish Shambles on Poole Quay. Who is this project suitable for? This opportunity is ideal for students studying GCSE or BTEC Lv. 2 Music,

3 with no more than 30 students per session. About Jon Adams Jon Adams works cross- platform in image, word, sound and performance, weaving in fragments of autobiography, science and hidden metaphor. The result is a unique visual perspective of recording and systemizing history, time and place. Jon s sound and performance work has been exhibited in cathedrals, at the Tate Modern and Turner Contemporary Margate, working with found sounds such as words, MRI machines and supernovae. He actively feeds into national Arts policy and debate concerning neurodivergence in the arts and is campaigning for parity for neurodivergent artists through Flow Observatorium. Though the project, students will explore how electronic music is created, produced and communicated, working collaboratively with Jon and their peers to record, edit and create a selection of sound samples to produce an album and online resource to feature as part of the festival. Workshop summary The project offers 2 hands- on, in- school workshops followed by an online feedback and mentoring session with the artist, Jon Adams: Listening, creating and making; How to create a multi- track soundscape; Finalising and presenting are outlined below Workshop 1: Listening and Making Outline content: Aural perception skills for music technologists using found sound including separating and using background, every day and self- generated environment sounds (i.e. tapping a metal railing); Recording live sounds technique; audio capture audio capture process and procedures, record level, distortion, noise

4 Software tools including Audacity (free download); Graphic notation Outcomes: students will be able to: Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory; Listen with increasing discrimination and awareness to inform their practice as musicians; Begin to use technologies to record and edit appropriately; Begin to devise alternate and visually expressive methods of sound notation Workshop 2: How to create a multi- track soundscape Outline content: Exploring compositional devises such as repetition, contrast and balancing; Editing and multi- track building skills including cut and paste, fade in fade out, normalising techniques, trimming, take selection, time stretching, normalizing; Mixing and audio problem solving; Project management, e.g. file management, backing up, takes and exporting tracks including, audio formats & uploading to the web Outcomes: students will be able to: Develop their understanding of audio composition Develop an understanding of sound manipulation techniques Develop their own soundscape portfolio Workshop 3: Finalising and Presenting the work; Remote online mentoring and feedback session Outline content: Students to submit a selection of samples and/or a draft

5 soundscape made from these samples for online mentoring/feedback via with Jon Adams Outcomes: students will be able to: Manage their own sound recordings and respond to given feedback; Produce an exported version of their finished soundscape as a CD or online using an appropriate format; Contributed to the compilation album titled Sounds of Poole which will be played during the festival in the Fish Shambles on Poole Quay, and to be available for use by the general public as a sample collection; Reflect on the recording and compositional process for future briefs and projects Before the workshops students are encouraged to record their own Sounds of Poole on their mobile phones and send the sound clips via to Jon Adams at soundsofpoole@gmail.com. Jon will also supply his own Sounds of Poole and upload to Light Up Poole SoundCloud by 2 January 2018 for the students to use as part of their own creation. Time Commitment Schools should confirm their interest to participate via to Michael Armstrong at michael.armstrong@bournemouth.gov.uk by Tuesday December and provide the following information: Preferred date and time Workshop 1, (can be double period for each workshop) Preferred date and time Workshop 2, Preferred date and time online feedback session All 3 workshops will need to take place between January 2nd and January 25th Confirmation of dates will be sent to each school by

6 18 December Additional Information Class size (no more than 30), age of students and brief outline on students experience, knowledge of sound recording skills should be supplied on the Registration form The school requires Audacity (free sound editing software) for Mac/PC ( All music tracks to be considered for the album must be completed and sent via by 1 February 2018 to soundsofpoole@gmail.com. Jon Adams will edit the soundtracks and upload to SoundCloud by 11 February. The album will be played on February 2018 between 6pm and 10pm in the Fish Shambles on Poole Quay. The album of sounds will also be available online via Light up Poole SoundCloud Account. The public will also be encouraged to use the sound clips to make their own soundtracks.
