2 Jazz and improvised music PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM CMDL Certificate and/or MIMA certificate and/or DEM 1) Objectives This Course tends to: Give the student a working method that let them control the instrument technique and get a real artistic dimension. Develop their individual creativity and personal projects. Get the Jazz Culture and the knowledge of the different style that come from it, while consolidating rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic concepts. (Improvisations, performance) Make the students become independent and adapt themselves to all the professional situations. Have the best preparation to enter the professional life. Take the tests to obtain the MIMA Certificate 2) Eligibility requirements No diploma required. No age limit has been set. 3) Calendar The normal duration of the course is 2 years composed of 4 semesters. However students can enroll for one year only and renew their enrollment for the second year latest on May, 15 th. Weekly Classes are taught on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday but some master-class can take place on Wednesdays or Fridays. The course will begin at the end of September and finish mid-june. The CMDL Director makes the public list of the candidates who are allowed to sit for the entrance examination. 2

3 6) Admission Test A preselection would be made for candidates not licenced in DNOP or DEM. The candidate who has been accepted can come for the admission tests. The day and the hour of the tests will be communicated to him or her by mail 15 days before The candidate will have to sit at the CMDL 15 minutes before of his notification Any absence to these tests would be eliminatory. The admission tests consist in a written test (non eliminatory) and an oral test. Written test Harmony test, writing test Musical dictation ( melody and chords) ( tuning fork allowed ) Recognition of musical extracts Practical test The execution of an instrumental program composed by: 1 piece chosen by the examiners among the 2 pieces proposed by the candidate. These pieces can be standards, original composition or standards arrangements. Each candidate must send complete scores for the rhythmic section (double bass, drums, piano, and 1 set of scores for the examiner) to the CMDL with the complete file. No more than 2 pages by score and must be written with musical software 1 imposed music chosen by the jury amongst the imposed tunes to download on our website, worked beforehand and interpreted without score This program must last approximately 12 minutes; the jury is allowed to interrupt the candidate whenever he wants or needs. For these test the candidate will be accompanied by CMDL teachers (bass, drums, piano). The accompanists will not operate rehearsal with the candidates A sight-reading An interview with the Jury regarding the studies plan. Foreign or French candidate who lives abroad not being able to come to the entrance examination because of the distance of their place of residence can ask for a dispensation for not coming to the CMDL for the tests. The CMDL administration reserves the right to accept or to refuse this request of dispensation In this case of the acceptance by the administration they must provide the following items: 1- A video on which he will have recorded 3 pieces performing live and in trio at least (1 music chosen by the candidate and 2 imposed pieces chosen among the list of the imposed tunes) 2- One questionnaire dealing with studies plan. A Skype meeting will be organized with the examiners and the candidate on a day chosen by the CMDL. 3

6 Course details Instruments and sight-reading The main teacher ensures the responsibility and the educational follow up. He teaches classes every week. The Intervening teacher can teach a subject in particular or gives a different point of view on the subject taught by the main teacher. Technique: control of the instrument, sight reading... Improvisation: The student will bring his own culture and knowledge to improvise. Study of the different improvised languages. Harmony- Composition - arranging Theoretical and practiced harmony Study of the big styles Development of the student s personality on original compositions Work on the students arrangements and compositions from different courses. Ear training Analytic Ear (how to recognize intervals) Intuitive Ear (how to recognize harmonic colors, modes,..) Ear linked to the instrument (questions - answers, imitations) Rhythm Work on the internal clock («internal dance») without any instrument but with hands, feet, mouth. Rhythmic perception according to style and periods (work on position) Work on polyrhythmic, asymmetrical beats.. History of jazz music listening and analytic comments Musicology and history of improvisation illustrated with record listening and extracts played by the teachers Musical computing Study of the different musical software (midi, audio, writing) Recording Practical work in studio with protools Piano complementary Chords study Themes sight readings, chords Jazz repertoire ensemble Study of the standards in Jazz repertoire World music repertoire ensemble Work on current world music (Latin, rhythm n blues, Brazilian, Cuban, traditional, flamenco ) Creation-Original repertoire ensemble Work on original repertoire composed by the intervening teachers or by the students. Big band Working as a big band Studio recording The CMDL let the students use the recording studio in which they have to record a record a demonstration recording composed of 3 or 4 tunes.. Master class conferences The CMDL organizes several master classes and conferences each year. These guests can share their knowledge and musical experiences with the students. At the moment we cannot give you the exact list of bands and musicians coming during this year, but be sure they will be prestigious musicians. Knowledge of the professional environment Study of the Artist s rights, copyrights, and the Artist s status.
