2 Department: Jazz and Improvised Music INITIAL EDUCATION Bachelor in Music and Performing Arts Objective The CMDL is a private high school that will provide, thanks to its partnerships with the Evry Val d Essonne University, an education leading to a Bachelor in Music and performing Arts issued by Evry Val d Essonne University. The Objective of the Course is to let students get a starting academic level of knowledge and competency in Jazz and Improvised music while making sure they get the general knowledge, and know how to use Information and Communication tools as well as musical software. This Course tends to: - Give the student a working method that let them control the instrument technique and get a real artistic dimension. - Develop their individual creativity and personal projects. - Get the Jazz Culture and the knowledge of the different style that come from it, while consolidating rhythmic, harmonic and melodic concepts. (Improvisations, performance) - Make the students become independent and adapt themselves to all the professional situations. - Get the competency to possibly allow them to: - access other exams (IUFM, Capes, Aggregation,) - pursue higher studies in high education (Master, doctorate ) - to have the best preparation to enter the professional life Concerned persons: Professional or amateur musician with a high level of practice and theory Acceptance conditions: To sit for the entrance examination you must be: 1. Licensed in DINOP (National Degree of professional musician orientation) and exceptionally until 2014 we accept DEM (Music School Degree), Golden Medal, 1 st prize in Music and Dramatic Art School. 2. Holder of the French Baccalaureate or foreign equivalent diploma. For candidates who don t have any of these qualifications, they have the possibility to get a dispensation from the school director. Documents to provide: The candidates must fill the enrolment form with the following documents. For all candidates A copy of your Identity Card ( both side if needed) Copy of French Baccalaureate or of the diploma equivalent to the French high school diploma or the titles opening the access to the higher education in their country with report card Copy of musical diploma Copy of report cards of your Bachelor in Musicology, in case you studied it previously. 2 Identity photos 2 stamped envelops A check or a bank transfer of 70 for the entrance examination enrolment fees, payable to CMDL A cover letter in which he explains his desire to come to study in France. 1 Curriculum vitae mentioning your previous musical studies (subject/school/year/level/degrees, etc...) Eventual dispensation demands (diploma, age limit ) with justifying documents. Record of 2 tunes (1 imposed + 1 of his choice) For foreign candidates (EEE and outside EEE) Official and sworn translation of all the following documents: Equivalent diploma to the French Baccalaureate+ report cards, equivalent diploma of the DEM or DINOP, Bachelor in Musicology. Justifying language tests (TCF or DELF level B2) For the foreign candidates outside UE 2

3 1. Have the necessary documents to be legally authorized to stay in France (Visa/ Residence permit) 2. Prove their sufficient Knowledge in French ( TCF or DELF level B2 is compulsory)* The Conditions of admission for foreign students can be different according to the country outside EEE, please check on CMDL website (student life > international) Check as soon as possible with the University of Evry Val d Essonne concerning the DAP programme (demande d admission préalable). Application to be sent between November 15 th 2015 and January 22nd 2016 Age limit Age limit is 28 years old (December 31 st of the school year) and don t stop study for no more than 2 years Admission Test The candidate who has been accepted can come for the admission tests. The admission tests are the following: Written tests - Test of harmony - Dictation (melodic lines and chords) - Test of History of jazz music These tests will be essential to evaluate the candidates but are not eliminatory Oral Tests 1. Execution of an instrumental program composed of : 1 piece chosen by the candidate. This piece can be standards, original composition or standards arrangements. Each candidate must send complete scores for the rhythmic section (double bass, drums, piano, and 1 set of scores for the examiner) to the CMDL with the complete file. This score has to make no more than 2 pages and must be written with musical software 1 standard chosen by the examiners among the list of 10 pieces imposed to download on our site, performed without any scores. Total duration of the program cannot be over 12 minutes. The examiners reserving the right to interrupt the candidate at any time Candidates will be accompanied by musicians from CMDL only. Accompanying musicians will not do any previous rehearsal with the candidates. 2. A sight-reading 3 An interview with the Jury regarding the studies plan. 4 Course The global body of this three-year course is homogeneously shared between practical, theoretical, cultural and methodological classes. The course preparing for the Bachelor L1 - L2 - L3 is planned on 3 consecutive years of 30 calendar weeks shared into 6 semesters The professional orientation gets more precise at the end of the 4 th semester and is being effective at the beginning of the 5 th semester 4

He teaches classes every week. The Intervening teacher can teach a subject in particular or gives a different point of view on the subject taught by the main teacher. Technique: control of the instrument, sight reading... Improvisation: The student will bring his own culture and knowledge to improvise. Study of the different improvised languages Ear training Analytic Ear (how to recognize intervals) Intuitive Ear (how to recognize harmonic colors, modes...) Listening and analytic comments (L1-L2) To let the students know about important musical works. Develop the sense of earring observation, learn how to place music in its right period or school and learn how to listen to music with a professional Ear. English (L1-L2-L3) Subject taught by the Language department of the University. Work in language laboratory (oral and written). Law and social life (L2) General introduction to Law, its foundation, its goal as well as study of its origins and main application rules. Study of the rules that are applicable to Performing Art companies and all the different legal forms they can have (public organization, association, public, association, commercial establishment, etc.) Optional Subjects Choir (L1-L2 L3) Work on posture, breathing, anticipation and internalization, learning of the vocal gestures. The intervention of famous current musicians replaces the traditional music teacher. It is important indeed to give the students the opportunity to learn with musicians who are still playing in different places, for different people, who are able to share their experience of the stage, without any frustration. 10 CMDL LOCATION The CMDL has taken up residence in a 19th century chateau located on wooded grounds in Dammarie-lès-Lys, a community of 22,000 situated close to the city of Melun, which is a 30-minute train ride from Paris. Completely modernized inside, the chateau offers excellent facilities in a beautiful setting. The school s 27 rooms are of varying sizes and include practice rooms, classrooms, a recording studio and two large rooms for hosting master classes and for large ensembles. ACCESS by car 46 Km from porte d'orléans or porte d'italie via the South Motorway A6 A or A6B (Exit 12) St Fargeau Ponthierry Follow the N7, drive through St Fargeau, Ponthierry et Pringy (+/- 10 Km) At the roundabout, take the N 472 to Dammarie-Lès-Lys Take the N 372 to Melun Drive past an ELF fuel pump on your right and the entrance of the park is 200 m after this pump, In front of the Police Station. Enter the park and the white castle is the CMDL ACCESS by train 28 min by direct train from Gare de Lyon (take the train to Montereau or Montargis) and stop at Melun Station then take the Bus (line E, on the left of the station) to Dammarie-Lès-Lys. Stop at Copernic and walk to the Abbaye du Lys park. 10

11 USEFUL INFORMATION Scholarship and Financial help If you have limited income, you may have the possibility to get a scholarship or financial help. Scholarship from the CROUS Scholarship based on social criteria: All French and foreign students, who are under 28 years old are concerned. To help you evaluate the amount of the scholarship you could benefit you can use the simulation system on the CROUS website. You can start applying for the scholarship even if you are not sure to pass the examination. What matters is not the school in which you are going to study but your parents income. Please note that the sooner the CROUS will have your complete application, the faster the payment of the scholarship will be made. Then the financial help will be given according to 3 criteria: the household income, the number of children and the distance of the school from where the student lives. A scale is made according to these elements and it specifies the amount of money that can be given to the student. Warning! Bad attendance or absence to the examination will automatically lead to the cancellation of the scholarship as well as the refund of the money that would have been already given. To ask for a scholarship visit the CROUS website and apply online between January15th and April, 30th. Emergency Aid The national emergency fund can provide a fast solution for students being in precariousness. This emergency aid can be as follows: A punctual aid for the student being in a punctual serious situation. An annual aid for the student being in a long-lasting serious situation. 12 ACCOMODATION In Dammarie-lès-Lys The CMDL collaborates with HLM (low rental accommodation) Organization based in Dammarie-Les-Lys and has selected student rooms located in the Plaine du Lys. The Residency is 500 m far from the School and 1km far from Melun Train Station. Two types of accommodation are available: Fully Furnished 3bedroom apartment.
