13 Notes For The Tunes In M. C. Handel s Holiday Favorites Kris Kringle s Jingle Thingle Didja ever notice... that there are only so many secular, public domain Christmas songs that can be adapted for recorder only using five or fewer notes? Well, M.C. has managed to find a good one! We are very pleased with his unique arrangement that keeps recorders on G, A, B, C, and D while the orchestra/rock band turns this into a real showpiece. There are even suggestions on the part (as optional stems) that let players play even more simplified rhythms than are recorded. To make it yet more fun, add your own live jingle bells... or jingle thingles of your students own construction. Ukrainian Bell Carol We thought we had done all of the traditional seasonal tunes that could be done with just the few notes available to beginning recorder students. Well, we were wrong... more or less. Actually, we don t do the entire tune in the recorder part, but we do give young players an interesting part to play in an arrangement with a unique recording full of all sorts of bells and bell-like sounds. As published, this setting uses E, G, A, B, and C, mostly on dotted half notes. If these parts are still too difficult for some players, simply remove the quarter notes at the end of measures like 36 and 42. Several teachers have told us that they use our recorder features with mallet instruments such as glocks, and occasionally with beginning string students. This arrangement would work very well with glocks or metallophones playing the recorder part. Also, regardless of what instruments play the published part, you may want to add other students playing triangle, small unpitched bells, or other tinkly percussion instruments. Also, consider constructing a simple ostinato for your mallet instruments based on A and E. During the last measure, you may wish to add wind chimes, a bell tree, or other bell-like instruments, ad lib. World Chimes The opening statement of this recorder piece is the famous chime melody associated with bell towers around the world. In fact, we were originally going to call this Westminster Round, but then we decided that it sounded too world -ly for that. The recording, which is necessary for the performance of the tune, includes chimes, percussion from many different nations, cello, bells, rhythm section, gong, synthesizers, and recorders. The recorder part features the notes B, A, and G for the most part, with an occasional high D thrown in. It follows and complements the chime melody as originally stated at first, including the forte piano whole notes which chime the hour. Later in the piece, at measure 29, there is an optional round. Divide your players into two groups. Let one group begin playing the melody at 29 and then have the second group play the same melody at 29, but start them two measures later. For rehearsal, you can have them play it in unison until they learn it well, then let them break into the round. This will give them good practice playing parts. They will also feel a sense of accomplishment if they can stand their ground during a round. The high D could be changed to B, A, or G as it occurs in the melody. Adapt it as you need to. The D at the end of the piece is part of the optional divisi, so it could be eliminated entirely if you don t want your performers trying it yet. This is another piece that could very well function as a part of your seasonal programming. It refers to no specific holiday or season, but the use of the chimes could be reminiscent of something seasonal. It could also be used any time of the year or for any celebration of multicultural occasions. In any case, you could even add your own ethnic percussion or instruments to it for even more diversity. Rahther Jolly Olde St. Nicholas Just when you think you ve heard every possible version of this classic American Christmas tune, our friend M.C. Handel concocts an arrangement that allows your beginning recorder players to sing and play with the accompaniment of a delightful orchestra of strings, brass, and percussion. The Mozart-like strings set up a pattern that lets your players play fairly slowly without noticing that the song is slower than normal. As you will hear on the recording, the arrangement includes three times through the song. It is designed so that the first verse is played on recorder and the second verse is sung. For the third verse it gets a little bit sillier. This is the verse where the lyrics describe what each child wants for 12

14 Christmas. For the recording, we picked names of the kids performing, and suggest that you do the same, possibly rotating the names used each time you perform it. (Good luck figuring out which names to use in the concert! Maybe you could draw them from a hat or use the name usage as a reward for performance or deportment.) You will note that during this verse, the line will start, Justin wants a... followed by a under the next phrase. These notes are played on the recorder. The tune ends with a little extension of the song that also features a sung line followed by a final recorder answer. O Come Little Children In this unique setting of the traditional German carol, we have added a bit of Latin spice. The melody is actually sung, with recorders playing a complementary countermelody. Though you could have recorders play the melody, if you prefer. It is a bit more challenging than the regular recorder part and may be something older students would enjoy. The second vocal part is too low for a soprano recorder, but if you wanted to, you could have students play it up an octave on alto recorders. If you choose to perform the piece as is, you will notice that we have altered the words to make them secular and therefore usable in any situation, and for any event. (There is no mention of the holiday ostinato for mallets ostinato for non-pitched percussion season!) You can use the original sacred lyrics, however, if you want. If you use the vocal parts, we suggest that you use your youngest singers for part 1, and older students or adults for part 2, if you are using part 2, which is optional. The recorder part can be played by a soloist or by a whole ensemble. You can also use any C instrument on the recorder part you wish, such as handbells, xylos, flutes, etc. We have created brief harmonic and percussive ostinati for your performance as well. They are included here. The first is for mallets, such as xylos, glocks, and so forth. The second indicates the non-pitched percussion instruments suggested. Use as many instruments as you like, entering gradually, and exiting in reverse order. You could add other instruments, and/or let your students write their own parts. For the shakers/maracas, consider constant straight eighth notes instead of the written part. Both ostinati are optional, of course. Ode To Joy This grand and exciting arrangement for recorders is included in this collection as a special bonus from another one of our recorder resources, Recorder Karate.* Your more advanced students will love it. While the quantity of notes involved makes it a little more challenging, it is so familiar to most student that they should have no problem picking it up quickly. Besides, virtually all movement is step-wise, and it s easier for younger students than it looks. If you are combining players with different ability levels, there are several things you can try. For one thing, you could have your beginning students just play the last part of each phrase (bars 11, 12; 15, 16; 23, 24, 25; 28, 29). If you fear that there is too much stamina required for some players, have them rest from 17 through the second beat of 21. As always, you may adapt this (or any) arrangement freely to suit your needs. The real beauty of this song is the recording on the P/A CD, which you will need to perform it. Simple and elegant, it features piano, bass, drums, electric guitar, antique cymbals (playing the rhythmic pattern), trumpets, trombones, horns, clarinet, strings, and timpani. The rock anthem treatment is so fine, we think even Mr. Beethoven would enjoy it if he were celebrating with us today. *Note: Recorder Karate by Barb Philipak is published by Plank Road Publishing, Inc.
