You are invited to an informational meeting for the Middleton High School Band and Orchestra Association (MHS BOPA) on Thursday, September 13th at 7:00 pm in the PAC. This is the only general parent meeting that is held by BOPA each year. In addition to news from Mr. Kurr, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Ver Voort, this is where you learn what is happening in the band and orchestra programs for the school year. At the meeting, the group votes for and installs officers for the school year (see the slate on page 4). MHS BOPA is a very effective group of parents that organizes and energizes events for our young musicians. Please consider getting involved in one or more of the important initiatives: Fund Raising: Fruit Sale in the fall, Spring Supper in the spring Concert Receptions Special Concerts: Jazz Cabaret and Jazz Tracs Awards Reception & Program in May Piano Accompanying for student musicians For anyone who was unable to attend the meeting, the committee volunteer form can be accessed at mhsbopa.com. Immediately following the general meeting will be a meeting to share details about the spring break trip to New York City. Parents of any students considering attending should not miss this! Good Neighbor Fest 6 Text Reminders 6 Improving Performance 6 Thank You Volunteers 7 Winds of WI (WOW) 7 Please Volunteer 7 Volunteer Form 8 Band Dates 9 Orchestra Dates 10 Volunteer for BOPA The instrumental music program serves a great number of students at MHS. Offering much more than in-class curriculum, students are given individual and small-group instruction, performance and competition experiences, and travel opportunities. This first-class program would be impossible to execute without the assistance of dedicated parent volunteers. Show your support of the music program by volunteering with MHS BOPA. There are opportunities for every schedule and personality. Consider taking on an Executive Board position, serving on a committee, assisting with individual annual events, taking pictures or baking cookies for concert receptions. There is also the opportunity to provide program support by helping in the band or orchestra rooms. All volunteers are welcome and needed! Please complete the attached volunteer form and return it at the end of the general meeting. If you are unable to attend, you may return the form to school with your student, return it by mail or . For additional information, you can call the Band Office at (608)

Just as in the world, this describes MHS Orchestra this year. We will once again have our standard performances in November, March, and late May, Winter Teas in December, Spring Supper and Fine Arts Week, and so forth. We will be taking a tour to New York City over Spring Break, and that will be a new and exciting part of the year. Our repertoire will include music from Swan Lake, Barber of Seville, In The Hall of the Mountain King, and more. Orchestra News We will use Remind, a mass texting service, to send updates and reminders to students this year. If you would like to get in on that action, here is how: Send a text to the number and in the body of the text write "@mhs-so-par" [for Symphony] or "@mhs-co-par" [Cardinal]. If is better for you (or you want both), send a note to either mhs-so-par@mail.remind.com or mhs-copar@mail.remind.com. The itself can be totally blank. As a lover of all music, Mark wishes to share his musical interests and talents with his students. He is currently student teaching at both Shorewood Elementary School and Middleton High School to complete his certification in general and instrumental music education. While attending UW-Madison, Mark studied double bass under Professor Richard Davis, who continues to be a mentor and fantastic source of inspiration. Honored to be on board with the Middleton High School's music department, he is excited to work with Steve Kurr and his orchestras. The band has already been hard at work with a week and a half of all-day rehearsals over the past two weeks, and they performed at the first home football game on Friday, August 26 as well as the Good Neighbor Festival Parade on Sunday. Our remaining shows are as follows. - Friday, September 16 (Band Parent Night - all band parents get in free!) - Friday, September 23 (Homecoming) - Saturday, October 8 (Sauk Prairie Marching Invitational) - Friday, October 14 Arrival time is 5:30 pm for all games. The entire band will dress & rehearse before the pre-game activities, which start at 6:50 pm for all games. The halftime show is usually over around 8:15. After the show, the band has a break before returning with 7:00 left on the clock to play the remainder of the game. Band Parent Night is September 16 with free admission for all band parents and special recognition for parents of senior marching band members. Homecoming is Sept. 23. The Fall Field Show's Theme is "Angels and Demons." As a competitive-style show, this takes the band in a slightly new direction from previous years. You probably won't recognize any of the music, but be prepared for stage production and dramatic elements, along with some exciting drills.

3 Page 3 of 10 The Whole Note MHS Band Program Overview This year, there are five curricular concert ensembles during blocks 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 - plus an additional section of advanced percussion small group that meets during block 2. Mr. Brown and Mr. Ver Voort will once again be team teaching the bands this year. Cardinal Band: All freshman wind, brass, and percussion students are in Cardinal Band block 6 or 7. Sophomore Concert Band: All sophomores (with a few exceptions) are in the sophomore Concert Band during block 1. Junior Concert Band: This band is made up entirely of juniors (with a handful or sophomores) and meets during Block 2. Wind Ensemble: All seniors who have earned a "B" or better in Concert Band along with some juniors (by audition in the spring) are in Wind Ensemble during Block 3. Overview for the year: Highlights this year will include the marching band's Angels and Demons field show and the group's first competition in decades; concerts in December, March, and May; a visit from the Wisconsin Brass Quintet in late September; hosting the Solo and Ensemble Festival in March; the January Jazz Cabaret at Union South; and Jazz Tracs 2016 in May. Check out all the dates on the band calendar at the end of this newsletter. Small Group Instruction: With another year comes another rework of small group instruction. With enrollment much higher than it has ever been, Mr. Brown and Mr. Ver Voort will be crafting a schedule that allows all students to have contact time with a teacher on a regular basis. This direct contact time facilitates musical growth for each musician regardless of their current performance level. Instrumental Choirs: New this year will be like-instrument ensembles meeting on a regular basis (clarinet choir, trumpet ensemble, etc.). These groups will meet weekly and serve the dual purpose of providing enriching performance opportunities and facilitating the development of instrument-specific technique. Private Lessons: Students are highly encouraged to take private lessons with outside professionals. Roughly 1/3 of MHS band students studied privately last year. Mr. Ver Voort maintains an updated list of local professional teachers we recommend. Marching Band: The MHS Cardinal Marching Band is made up of students in grades 9-12 by enrollment. In addition to a summer "band camp" just before school starts, the band rehearses on Monday evenings during the football season. Each year, the band performs at the Good Neighbor Fest and Homecoming parades, at three or four home football games, and at Memorial Day observances. This year, the band is also taking their show to a regional competition. Jazz Band: All band students are eligible to audition for Jazz Ensemble. The audition material is available now, and auditions will be held the week of September 26th. The Jazz Ensembles rehearse at 6:00 and 7:30 PM on either Monday or Tuesday evenings. The two major performances include the Jazz Cabaret at the Union South in January and the Jazz Tracs Concert at the PAC in May. Pep Band: The MHS Cardinal Crew, or Pep Band, will play at a number of games for girls and boys sports this year. Each band student will need to sign up for several performances from November through March, though many students elect to attend additional games for fun and additional points toward band awards Calendar March 4 Solo & Ensemble Festival Middleton High School March 9 MHS Collage Concert March 14 Eine Kleine Kindermusik - Symphony March 16 Mike Dewey Concerto/Aria Showcase Symphony Orchestra & Wind Ensemble PAC March 21 Cardinal Showcase Concert Spring Break NYC Tour! The Parents Role in Music Education The band and orchestra directors would like to thank you in advance for supporting your kids in this valuable part of their education. Your support, through concert attendance, volunteering time to help with a music event, or simply complimenting your musician s improvement, is critical to your teen s music education. By noticing their challenges and successes, you are letting them know that you are interested and value their musical progress. In the current fiscal climate of annual budget cuts, it is crucial for parents who support the arts to stay informed about school policy, schedules, and curricula, and how these might affect fine arts instruction in our school district. Parents advocating for a strong fine arts program at MHS will continue to be an important voice as decisions are made in the future.

6 The Whole Note Page 6 of 10 Good Neighbor Fest Great job, MHS Marching Band representing Middleton High School in the annual Good Neighbor Fest parade! See more pictures at Text Reminders This year, the bands and orchestras will be making use of a free mass texting service to get announcements out to students and parents in yet another fashion. Remind is a web-based opt-in service that allows teachers to send out a text message to a large group of people at once. No phone numbers are shared, no privacy is compromised, and it is a simple task to enroll. Students will find out more about this in classes during the first few weeks of school. And, of course, this is an optional notification system, so nobody is required to join in. Improving Performance Years of achievement on his/her instrument have shown your student to have an interest, dedication, and love of music. Help your child take his/her performance to the next level by considering private lessons with one of the area s many professional musicians, or upgrading his/her instrument or mouthpiece to an intermediate or professional model. Contact your student s director for a list of private instructors as well as advice about new and used upgrade instruments for sale.

7 The Whole Note Page 7 of 11 Thank you! Special thanks to Lisa Cole, marching band color guard coach and Vanesa Meneses, assistant coach for their many hours of work helping to prepare the students for their marching band performances. You have really taken the guard to new heights this year! Thanks also to Cheryl Wagner-Stahnke for organizing the marching band tailgate party and to Connie Fagre, our Uniform Committee Chairperson. Finally, thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered your time to help shop, grill, fit uniforms and otherwise support the band so far this year. Winds of Wisconsin Winds of Wisconsin (WOW) is composed of a select group of Wisconsin high school wind and percussion instrumentalists who perform traditional and contemporary wind band literature on Sunday evenings on the UW-Madison campus. The program consists of two concerts with five rehearsals each, sectionals, an instrumental masterclass with UW- Madison School of Music faculty, and additional topics presented by the music education faculty. Both concerts are held in Mills Concert Hall. The November concert is combined with the UW Madison Wind Ensemble. Application deadline: September 26, 2016 Student auditions: October 2, 2016 from 4-8:00 p.m. Concerts: November 20, 2016, 5 pm and March 6, 2017, 6 pm For more information, see: continuingstudies.wisc.edu/wow/ Please contact Mr. Brown or Mr. VerVoort for an application. Volunteers Needed! We need you! Volunteers help the music program be able to provide the students of Middleton the high level of musical exposure and education that we have all come to enjoy. Volunteers assist in the Music Program in various ways such as assisting with administrative tasks, volunteering with the Fruit Sale and Spring Supper, Fine Arts Week, Jazz Tracs, Jazz Cabaret, and the list goes on. The directors would love to have your support in the band and orchestra rooms. Volunteers have been an integral part of our program and we thank everyone that has taken the time to assist in the Music Program! Please consider completing the Volunteer Form on the following page and become involved in your child s musical experience.
