2 SISTEMA AOTEAROA Term 1 2 New Website and Youtube Channel Our very own new Sistema Aotearoa website and YouTube channel are now up and running and we are all very excited about achieving another milestone for the programme and our charitable trust. It s a great website to show to family, friends and anyone interested in our Sistema Aotearoa activities. A group of students from the Kupe Orchestra were privileged to play at the Inaugural Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board meeting in front of Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, council members and officials. The Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board have been long standing supporters and a funder of our programme so it was great to be able to provide some music for them to enjoy. We had a lot of fun too! 3 Add Si debar Content SISTEMA AOTEAROA Term 1 3 SNAPSHOTS OF THE DAY Hui Taurima 2016 End of Year Concert At the end of last year 317 of our amazing tamariki performed in our 2016 Hui Taurima in the largest arena at Vodafone Events Centre and the students were amazing! On stage and off stage their behaviour was perfect, they played brilliantly and every single student did their very best. The concert included our largest single group orchestra (so far!) of 166 children what a sight and what a sound! Two students Gabrielle Tonu u and Esekia Taito co-presented the afternoon and confidently gave clear introductions before a packed crowd of over 700 parents, whanau and supporters. The concert was opened by the Octave Up chamber ensemble an ensemble consisting of our oldest Sistema Aotearoa tamariki who were joined by some friends from the Tironui Trust programme at Papatoetoe Intermediate. They played to a high standard and it was special to see their hard work and collaboration with each other. As a special ending to the concert all Sistema Aotearoa tamariki sang Maranga Ra a special waiata composed for Sistema New Zealand by Rob Ruha. Sistema Tiki Orchestra student Lola Loni was our amazing vocal soloist accompanied by fellow students Octavia and Kahnyell on guitar and double bass as well as all 317 tamariki in full voice. We really can sing with the power to move the highest mountain and play a symphony of a thousand stars. What a fabulous concert! We are looking forward to working our way towards this year s Hui Taurima! Our Pūoru Pīrere Programme is Growing We ve added three new Otara Early Learning Centres to our Ministry of Education Pūoru Pīrere Programme. This term we ve enjoyed meeting the new tamariki at Kinz East Tamaki, East Tamaki Child Care Center and Poetiare O Rongomai. We ve also been spending some time with the children at St Johns Evangelist Pre-School this term. These centres join the existing programme delivered at Akoteu Tenga i Musita (Mustard Seeds), Barnardos KidStart Childcare, Mayfield Kindergarten, Bairds Kindergarten and Kenese Aoga Niue. Our tutors go into the centres each week to deliver an exciting and fun music session. These special little people are learning about language, concentration, and self-expression. They are also getting to know all about the instruments of an orchestra, the sounds they make, and how to read music notation. We can t wait until they are part of the main Sistema programme in a few years!
4 SISTEMA AOTEAROA Term 1 4 Performance at Pakuranga Park Village A group of our older students and some of their younger brothers and sisters who are also in the programme had a great morning playing for the residents of Pakuranga Park Village. The tamariki performed in different ensemble formations quartets, chamber orchestras, duos and trios making a great sound in all their different combinations. Some of the residents spoke afterwards including an 85-year-old cellist who complimented their technique and told the group that she still enjoys playing quartets with her friends. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share their music with their community and they really enjoyed chatting to the lovely residents at the village who shared stories, advice and kind words and a tasty morning tea! We can t wait until our next community performance! Young Leaders night out at the APO! As a thank you for their hard work at our holiday courses in 2016 we took the Sistema Young Leaders on a night out to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra s Outraged concert at the Auckland Town Hall. Leaving Otara and travelling up the motorway, we arrived at the Auckland Town Hall and had a chat with APO music Librarian Robert Johnson. We then headed to the APO office staffroom for our pizza dinner and went for a walk in Aotea Square before joining the hosting in the balcony before the concert. The concert was riveting and the tamariki gave a stunning round of applause and standing ovation. Before going home, the tamariki got a chance to meet violin soloist Benjamin Baker to chat and have their tickets autographed. A great end to a great night out! We are very grateful to the APO for their support and inviting us to attend the concert. It was a fantastic opportunity and an amazing night out that surely won t be forgotten for many years to come! Our New Double Bass Players! This term the Kupe group has added a new section to their orchestra double bass! After a couple of weeks of the group all getting a turn to try out the double bass 8 new double bassists have been selected. After having added in the new viola section last year this completes the Kupe String Orchestra and it s exciting to hear them make such a big and full string sound!
5 SISTEMA AOTEAROA Term 1 5 King s College Student Volunteers This term we have been very lucky to have seven music students from King s College come to volunteer their time with us at our afterschool Tiki Orchestra sessions. They ve joined in our orchestra playing side by side with our students, played in our chamber groups and also started to do a little teaching themselves. It s great to have them around for our students to chat about what they are each doing at school and with their music. Congratulations Enyah! Scholarship to St. Cuthbert s College Sistema Aotearoa is full of amazing students and here is one we are very proud of Enyah Talamaivao. Enyah has been awarded a scholarship to go to St. Cuthbert s College this year! She s been in our programme since she was 6 years old and we have enjoyed watching her develop into a fine violinist, a good clarinet player, and an awesome young lady who is hard working, a great leader and lots of fun. She s learnt all her music through Sistema Aotearoa so we are excited that the school orchestra has already snapped her up! Congratulations Enyah we wish you every success and we are so pleased that you are still going to come to the Sistema Aotearoa afterschool sessions. Urbanesia Festival A group of 25 tamariki from our Tiki Orchestra donned their cultural dress and got their instruments ready to perform at the Urbanesia festival. The students wowed the crowd by playing a mix of different cultural tunes and crowd favourites and even managed to play above the sound of the roaring wind! It was fantastic to be part of such a special cultural day.
