4 About the Band & Director Founded in 1989 by Craig D. Northrup, the Saratoga Community Band is made up of wind musicians and percussionists of all ages from Saratoga, Los Gatos and the greater Silicon Valley. In Fall 2014 Becky L. Dugan became the band s next director. Ms. Dugan has been an active member of the South Bay musical community for many years. A trombonist and low brass specialist, Ms. Dugan has performed with the Mission Peak Brass Band, Messiah Brass Quintet, San Jose Wind Symphony, Ohlone Wind Orchestra and other community ensembles. In addition she has provided musical leadership for churches and schools, and has taught music at the elementary, high school, and community college levels. She holds an MM from Arizona State University, as well as a Master of Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. She is a familiar presence in the Saratoga community, currently serving as brass specialist for the Saratoga Union School District. She also teaches trombone, euphonium and tuba to beginning through advanced students in her private studio. We are proud to have Ms. Dugan lead the Saratoga Community Band forward into our next quarter-century. About Our Soloist Vocalist Florence Beckmann has performed with the Saratoga Community Band multiple times over the last fifteen years. She is from New York where she studied voice in college. She has performed and recorded with Dixieland and Modern Jazz, Big Band, Rock, and Christian music groups since she was 17 years old. She has lived in California since 1993, is married to the band percussionist, Tom, and has two children, Hope (14) and Kurt (11). If you are interested in joining the band visit or come sit in on a rehearsal with us. No audition is necessary. Rehearsals are Monday evenings September-May, 7:00-9:00 pm at Saratoga High School. The mission of LGS Recreation is to provide fee-based public recreation programs for Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga and the Los Gatos mountain communities, as well as to provide feebased supplemental education programs and child care services for Los Gatos Union School District, Saratoga Union School District and Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District.

6 Program Notes Where the Black Hawk Soars: Robert W. Smith (b. 1958) Our first piece was written for the dedication ceremonies of Brooke Point High School in Stafford VA and was inspired by the new school s mascot: the black hawk. The soaring melodies and powerful lines portray the black hawk beautifully. March of the Belgian Paratroopers: Pierre Leemans; arr. Chas. Wiley Born in 1897, Belgian composer Pierre Leemans ( ) studied piano, harmony, orchestration and composition and began teaching at the Etterbeek Music Academy in While serving his year of military duty in 1919, Leemans' regimental commander asked him to compose a march; it was begun, but never finished. Near the end of World War II, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. As the group commander drove him home that night, the march theme came back to his mind, and he wrote out all of the parts for the official March of the Belgian Paratroopers after reaching home. A quiet, unaggressive essay in the easy-paced European style, it is set in the form of a patrol ; the music marches on from the distance, plays, and passes. Symphonic Suite from Harry Potter: John Williams; arr. Robert Smith In the same way that J. K. Rowling masterful books fire her reader s imaginations both young and old John Williams film score takes the stories to new heights. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, from which the melodies in our arrangement are taken, was the very first in the Harry Potter series and just in case you have not read the books or seen the movies, a little background might be helpful. Harry Potter is being raised by his miserable aunt and uncle who are terrified that Harry will learn that he's really a wizard, just as his parents were. But everything changes when Harry is summoned to attend an infamous school for wizards, Hogwarts by name, and he begins to discover some clues about his illustrious birthright. And the story goes from there... The melodies you ll hear include Hedwig s Theme Hedwig is Harry s pet owl who lends certain magical powers of his own on occasion; Nimbus 2000 ; Hogwarts Forever, the wizard school song; Leaving Hogwarts ; and Harry s Wondrous World. If you ve read the books or seen the films, let these melodies take you back to some of your favorite scenes in the Harry Potter stories. El Curripiti from Three Dances of Mexico: William Rhoads The American composer William Rhoads ( ) served in the U.S. Signal Corps during World War II. After the war he became a band director in New Mexico public schools, eventually becoming the Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico. In addition to his involvement in education, Rhoads has composed extensively for large ensembles as well as for the alto and bass clarinet. El Curripiti, from the area of Vera Cruz is a folk song and dance, which celebrates the defeat of Maximilian. Bravura March: Charles Duble Charles Edward Duble ( ) was an American band musician and composer. He played for 23 years in circus bands, starting as trombonist with Sun Bros. Circus in He also played in bands such

7 as Gentry Brothers Dog & Pony Show, John Robinson's Ten Big Shows, Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, Russell Brothers Circus, and finally, under the baton of Merle Evans, with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Duble was a tall, lanky trombone player with a notable sense of humor. He was elected to the Windjammers Circus Musicians' Hall of Fame in You ll hear clearly the echoes of the sawdust trail in this exciting, brassy circus march. Root Beer Rag: Billy Joel; arr. Michael Sweeney One of my favorite pop artists is Billy Joel, the great American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer. Since releasing his first hit song, "Piano Man", in 1973, Joel has become one of the best-selling recording artists in the United States. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1992) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999). When asked how Root Beer Rag was composed, the composer gave this response: It was in the mid-70s when I got my first Moog synthesizer and I put it on every record. I said 'I have to write an instrumental where I can use this Moog Synthesizer. It kind of turned me off the synthesizers forever after. That's why I wrote that song. Just purely out of stupid self- indulgence. Whatever the reason, Billy Joel s homebrewed rag is great fun. Our arrangement features our sax section and we hope you enjoy. But Not For Me: George & Ira Gershwin; arr. Warren Barker From Billy Joel we take several steps back in time to the Swing Era. The next piece we d like to play for you was written by George and Ira Gershwin for their 1930 musical Girl Crazy and introduced in the original production by Ginger Rogers. It is also in the 1992 musical based on Girl Crazy--Crazy for You. It has been recorded by many, many artists and heard in many movies. Perhaps you have your own favorite interpreter of this wonderful song, but we think you ll enjoy today s soloists. Our vocalist this afternoon is Florence Beckmann, who has been featured soloist with the Saratoga Community Band many times over the years. You ll also hear our own Craig Northrup, take a chorus on clarinet. Swing s the Thing: arr. Warren Barker The Swing Era is also called The Big Band Era and our next medley includes songs made famous during the Big Band Era: Night Train was written by Jimmy Forrest and made famous by Duke Ellington. I ve Heard That Song Before by Jules Stein and Sammy Cahn was made famous by the trumpeter Harry James and his vocalist, Helen Forrest. It has also been recorded by many of the great stars, including Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme and Al Hirt. Don t Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington, has been recorded by dozens of artists as diverse as Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, Harry Connick, Jr, Etta James, B.B. King and of course Sinatra and Torme and the list goes on. No question! It s a great song! We have a GREAT TIME playing this medley. We hope you enjoy listening! On the Greenway: Ed Kimbrough Our final selection this afternoon, On the Greenway, by Ed Kimbrough, was written as part of the Bicentennial Celebration of Greensboro North Carolina in It turns out that this delightful march is the composer s first piece for concert band.
