Laird Middle School family s mission is to nurture the diversity of each of our student s social, emotional, academic, and physical needs in a safe and caring environment. Snap chat it can be so hard to keep up with your child on the technical edge. BEING 13 was a CNN documentary that you can access on the CNN website. We strongly encourage all parents to look into this. Our students are Virtual Natives they have grown up in a world saturated with technological options and have the world at their finger tips. While this can be super cool, and a great learning opportunity, it also leaves our children vulnerable and wise beyond their years on topics that you may or may not discuss at home. The website gives insight to parents. The one hour documentary was also very informative. Quick tekkie parent tip : #1 Create your own account and follow your child on their social media. #2 Routinely check your child s technology. #3 Don t just check photos, check screen shots too. #4 Have a neutral place, not a bedroom, to store technology at night. #5 Talk! Each month every grade 7, grade 8, and grade 9 interdisciplinary team of teachers nominates students deserving of Sabres of the Month award. Students are nominated on a number of criteria including effort, positive citizenship at school, improvement, perseverance, and commitment to the school and its students. 2 Library News SEARCH CONNECT COMMUNICATE CREATE Page 2 We had a transformative Library Week from October Across Saskatchewan, libraries celebrated and invited students and staff to take a fresh look at what libraries can offer. At our school, the library transformed from a book warehouse to a makerspace, where classes spent an hour making and inventing at a variety of stations, including LittleBits (circuit building), Sphero (coding), LEGO and catapultmaking (engineering), digital drawing tablets and grown-up colouring books (art), and more! Feedback from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive, so all the tech used in our Library Week Makerspace is now a permanent addition to our collection, so students can come and be creative and engaged in exciting new ways. This newsletter is one way to communicate home and provides a wide variety of information and/or links to information that is pertinent to the health and success of Middle Years students. 3 Page 3 Band Mrs. Jones Notes from the Band Room Thank you to all the Students and Parents who participated in the Seasons of Savings fundraiser! If you still have money owing, please make sure it gets handed in to Mrs. Jones ASAP. Remembrance Day Performance- Friday November 6 th the Grade 9 Concert Band will be performing as part of our Remembrance Day Service on November 6 th. As this is an important service, please make sure your student has all the required parts of their band uniform -black dress shoes, black pants or black skirt (below the knee), black collared shirt. Trumpet takes Pause- Thank you to Emman Artiga for fulfilling the honourable role of solo trumpet player for the Remembrance Day services at Jack Kemp Community School and E.S. Laird. Winter Concert Wednesday Dec. 2nd at the Vic Juba Theatre. Sound Check at 5:30pm, doors open at 6:45pm, concert begins at 7:00pm. All Students are expected to attend. Performances are worth 30% of student s band marks. Please ensure you have a ride, your instrument, uniform and music for this evening. Looking forward to a great evening of music! Tuba Christmas Tour- All of the Tubas and Baritones in LPSD are participating in the 1 st annual Tuba Christmas Tour on December 9 th. We will be touring and playing Christmas carols at each of the LPSD schools. Jazz Trip- Edmonton Jazzworks Festival. Both Jazz I and Jazz II bands have been registered to attend this great festival in Edmonton on February 3 rd and 4 th. Stay tuned for permission forms and info. Grade 7 Trip- is set for Edmonton on April 22 nd Grade 9 Trip is to beautiful Camp Cadicasu May 11 th -13 th. 4 Page 4 E.S. Laird Middle School Chess Club Chess Club officially starts Monday/Wednesdays for the actual lessons and score lunch in Mr. Manns chess room. Of course as always all students are welcome anytime of the day to practice and have fun. Soccer Great Work E.S Students!! We consistently had 50 plus students participate with soccer this year. The season wrapped up in Meadow Lake. Wrestling Wrestling starts in NOVEMBER and will run on Tuesdays at noon hour. More information to come. 9C Service Project Cross Country Running We had 5 meets Unity, Vermilion, Lloyd Catholic School Division, Lloyd Public and Districts in Glaslyn. Each race featured ES Laird Students Districts Grade 9 Carter Wall 4th qualified for provincials Grade 7 Olivia Mann won Bronze in Districts. The class of 9C will be collecting children's winter clothing and donating to various schools and groups in our city. They are also sewing fleece mitts with the help of Miss. Kolla in Home Ec. to donate to children in need. The class is collecting: winter jackets, snow pants, boots, mitts, scarves and touques. If you would like to donate any of these items please drop off in Rm. 19 or contact Mrs. Strelezki with any questions. Way to go Runners!! The wood working Club runs Mondays 3:30-5:00pm.
