If ye reak faith ith us ho die We shall not though poppies gro In Flanders Flanders, a former county on the North Sea, as the heart of economic and political development in the lo countries during the Middle Ages. It included the present Belgian provinces of West and East Flanders and parts of modern France and the Netherlands. With its favorale location on the sea, Flanders ecame a ealthy trading center ith numerous industrial tons, such as Bruges and Ghent. Flanders has een the scene of repeated arfare from the time of the Crusades in the 12th century through the Hundred Years War in the 1th century, and from the Spanish Wars in the 1600s and 1700s to extraordinary attles during World War I. In 1919 Dr. ohn McCrae rote the stirring poem entitled In Flanders Fields. In 15 short lines, McCrae captures the courage, valor, ae and stark reality of ar. The images he invokes of young people s lives, once so full of hope and eauty, vanquished y the ravages of arfare, are some of the most moving ever penned. To this day, it continues to e an emotional salute to the young men and omen ho have given their lives in arfare protecting the lands, the people and the dreams e cherish most. His challenge to take up the torch of the fallen arriors is as desperate a challenge to rememer as any e ill find in the English language. On Veterans or Rememrance Days in North America e often ear a poppy lossom on our lapel to salute our fallen arriors. This eautiful gesture as encouraged y the vivid ords of Dr. McCrae s poem. From the intrepid attle fields of Gettysurg and Bull Run, Europe and the Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and all of the attles efore and after, e do our est to rememer the sacrifice of others ho protected our dreams and realities.
