3 rogram Note ~ and then e ere let It as not the irst time that I had crated my on poetry or a piece o music, ut it as the irst time I had ever adapted a text ith such a poerul emotional perspective I rememer the moment hen I as reading through the text o hat ecame the irst song: "Bareoot" Joseph Jok Kuol Wel says "I as ith my rother I as our years old" At the time, my irst child, a son, had ust turned our, and I as dumounded y the strength and vitality that this young oy exhiited in the ace o extreme violence and starvation At that point the material came to lie in a hole ne ay and I as inspired to create music that as simplistic and naive, rought ith strong emotion and a sense o uncomprehensiility The suect matter made this piece a diicult one to compose ecause I had to take mysel into an emotionally draining artistic space I hope this song cycle transports the musicians and audience into a similar state ull o emotional extremes such as ear, loss, devastation and hope For cello and guitar parts to and then e ere let, contact Jocelyn Hagen via ocelyn@ocelynhagencom
