2 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR TEACHERS Alvin Morris Saxophone & Bass Guitar Instructor 1. Place of Birth: Los Angeles, California 2. Education or Professional Experience: Valley High School (Las Vegas, NV) Grad, 20 Years in the Army Band as a Saxophone & Bass Guitar player. 3. Hobbies: Playing Pinochle 4. Favorite Food: Gumbo 5. Favorite Vacation Spot: Hawaii 6. Place I Hope to Visit: Alaska 7. Instruments I Teach: Saxophone & Bass Guitar 8. Philosophy of Teaching: (Something that was shared with me) Music, in general and playing an instrument in particular, is very personal. After learning the basic techniques of playing an instrument, students must look inside themselves to find their expression and create their art. I believe in creating a safe and enthusiastic environment for my students to explore that part of themselves. Enabling a student to access that inner expression allows him to grow not only as a player but also as an artist. 9. Favorite Thing About Teaching: Watching students grow in their love for music and increasing their knowledge and abilities, thus achieving their musical goals, whatever they might be DRUM AWAY THE DOLDRUMS Playing the drums or simply tapping out a rhythm on a table is a fun way to improve your health. Studies show that drumming boosts mood, eases worry, and even lowers inflammation. And you don t need to read music to benefit. Drumming is incredibly accessible, since imitating a song s rhythm is easier than replicating its melody, says Shara Sand, director of counseling at Manhattan School of Music.
3 Director's Corner: Gaining Life Lessons Through Music Important Life Lessons You ll Learn In Music Lessons What we choose to do in our spare time determines the lessons that form our lives and values. For example, those who choose to invest their time in sports are bound to learn a thing or two about teamwork, trust in teammates, and how to handle pain, while those who choose to explore music expose themselves to a different subset of life lessons many of which will help mold them into a better person. From understanding the importance of hard work to always staying humble, here are a few life lessons your child will learn while enrolled in music lessons. Staying Humble If your child loves playing the guitar, for example, and dedicates a lot of time to perfecting the instrument, they might eventually become one of the best players around. A hard lesson learned for those who are constantly praised for how good they are is understanding that they didn t get there without the help of others. Whether it was their first guitar teacher who worked overtime to help them learn new chords and scales or their grandparents who skipped their annual vacation to help pay for lessons, they ll come across individuals during their time as a guitar player who helped them get where they are today. Some of the most loved guitarists today are highly regarded because they treat others with respect nobody likes a diva! The Importance of Hard Work It s no secret that hard work leads to success, and music students know this more than anyone. From the joy of finally getting that difficult passage right to the thrill of their first recital or live performance that went off without a hitch, hard work truly pays off in the world of music. If you really believe that hard work pays off, enrolling your child in music lessons is a great way to help your child learn this valuable life lesson. Studies have shown that music students tend to be more disciplined and motivated than their friends who don t take lessons. Instilling those values in your child is just one of the many benefits of music lessons. Plus, these lessons will carry on through their adult life. Success in business takes hard work, patience, and perseverance instill these values in your child now, rather than trying to do it later. Making Mistakes Is Okay Another important life lesson your child will learn while enrolled in music lessons is the idea that making mistakes is okay. Not only that, but that mistakes are an essential part of growth. As your child sees failures gradually turn into wins, they ll begin to realize that nobody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes. Perfection in any area of life is almost never achieved without facing bumps in the road, and learning this lesson will help your child become a better student, friend, and future employee. Ultimately, your child will be able to accept rough times in their personal life as something that must be experienced in order to experience joy and success a concept many adults still don t have a grasp on! Continued on page 4
4 Continued from page 3 Keeping an Open Mind How someone interprets something is one of the things that makes music so beautiful no two ears or minds are exactly alike, and what one person enjoys listening to, another might hate. This concept will help your child keep an open mind when it comes to respecting the opinions and ideas of others, as some of their classmates and friends will enjoy listening to and playing the same music as they do, and others won t. And guess what? Neither person is wrong. The importance of this concept is one that will extend into other areas of your child s life, from the lunchroom to the board room, molding them into a person who is a pleasure to work, live, and play with. Setting Goals Last but not least, enrolling your child in music lessons will help them learn how to set realistic goals, as most music teachers will encourage your child to set short-term and long-term goals during the course of their musical studies. At its core, music is very goal-oriented; in fact, it s almost impossible to succeed without setting goals of all sizes along the way. Exposing your child to the process of setting goals (and working towards them) early on in life is one of the best things you can do to set them up for long-term success. Plus, goal setting can also foster their time management and overall organizational skills, things that are valuable in all aspects of life. Gift Certificates are for Anytime! Looking for just the perfect gift to give to your loved ones? Why not surprise them with a Gift Certificate for Music Lessons from the Brill Music Academy! SPECIAL DISCOUNT (with this coupon) Four 30 minute lessons or Two 60 minute lessons - $ Call or see us for details! Brill Calendar The new calendar for the coming 12 months is available. If you haven t gotten one already, they are available at the front desk. Each year, we try to match our holiday closures as close to the public school s as possible. However, our overriding rule is that we provide the same number of lesson days (48) throughout the year for each day of the week (Monday - Saturday). This requirement for lesson number equality creates the need for a few changes. Some years, there are extra days around a single day holiday. Some years, there may be a Friday and/or Saturday that Brill is open and the schools aren t. Please be aware of the differences in the two calendar schedules and don t assume that just because the schools are closed, that we will be also. Keep your Brill Calendar handy (it s a great addition to your refrigerator door) and don t be afraid to call us if you re not certain. We also post signs on the door/counter/ bulletin board, our website contains the calendar, and most of the time we send a mass reminder to everyone. There shouldn t be any confusion as to when we are open or closed through the year.
5 When important events happen in the lives of our students, I depend a lot on our teachers to share the news. I also want to let you know what our teachers are doing. Please let us know when special things occur in your life. We want to be able to tell everyone the Good News! **************************************** Liz Kaupp, brass & piano teacher, will be performing on Thursday, Oct 5th with Oompoparama in the Marriot Hotel. On Oct 6,7,8, she will be in Laughlin with the Gingersnaps. On Oct 14 & 21, she will be at the German American Club, also with the Gingersnaps from 7-10pm, which is open to the public. Ava Choe (piano student of Tammy Jacobs) has graduated from Alfred s All-in-One Course Piano Book 3 and is now working hard in Book 4. Great job, Ava! Hayden Daly (former voice student of Marie Leatham-Davis), has written and co-produced his single, Sonja. It is available on itunes, AppleMusic and Spotify.
