4 progmmnous~~~~~- ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK ( )-"Dream Pantomime" from "Hansel and Gretel" In the second act of Humperdinck s famous opera the children. Hansel and Gretel, are walking through the woods looking for strawberries. As the daylight fades they become hopelessly lost. A "sandman" appears and. under his spell, the children drop off the sleep. During this scene the orchestra plays an interlude that has become known as the "Dream Pantomime". Although "Hansel and Gretel" is the most popular of Humperdinck"s works, he did write several other operas based on familiar fairy tales. One of these. "Die Koenigskinder" ("Children of the King"), had its American premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on December 28, Another. "[)omroeschen" ("Sleeping Beauo/") was based on a tale by Perrault which also formed the basis for a well-loved ballet by Tschaikovsky. Orchestral excerpts and orchestral suites from these Humperdinck operas have now become standard fare at symphony concerts. GEORGES BIZET ( )-Selections from L"Arliesienne Suite No. I-Overture. Carillon In 1872 French author Alphonse Daodet (best known for his 'Tartarin oftarascon") produced his play ''LArlesienne." The play involves a town vamp who seduces a young peasant away from his long-time girl friend. She then dumps him for someone else, very much lil<e Carmen in 4 Bizet's famous opera. The distraught young man commits suicide. Not a preto/ story, but the incidental music that Bizet wrote for the play is ~ pretry! The original incidental music was made up of twenry-seven short pieces. Bizet rescored five of these for his orchestral suite No.I: I. Overture, 2. Minuetto. 3. Adagietta, 4. Danse Provencale and 5. Carillon. After Bizet's untimely death. a friend, Ernest Guirand. selected four further pieces to form Orchestral Suite No.2: I. Pastorale. 2. Intermezzo, 3. Minuetto and 4. Farandole. Although the original play is almost forgotten, Bizet's wonderfully descriptive music is still very much alive. Judging from his main works, Bizet seems to have been obsessed with the "Femme Fatale"' even though he actual!y led a Quiet bourgeois life with his charming and devoted wife. Genevieve, daughter of JacQues Halery. composer of the opera, "La luive". ROBERT RUSSELL BENNETT ( ) This American orchestrator. conductor and composer. as a young man, studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Over a period of forry years he orchestrated some three hundred Broadway musicals. In 1935 he produced an opera based on the life of celebrated diva Maria Malibran ( ) ROBERT LAWSON SHAW This American conductor was born in Red Bluff. California in In 1948 he formed the Robert Shaw Chorale with which he toured international!y and produced many recordings. From 1967 up to his recent death he was Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
