2 Matrial for a programm not Born in Covntry (1947), Anthony Skilbck's coosing lif has bn supportd by work as a tachr, pianist, organist and choir trainr. Musical studis wr bgun during Skilbck's childhood in Bournmouth, whr his principal musical mntor was Michal Ptrson. First profssional qualifications wr obtaind whilst studying at th Royal Collg of Music and London Univrsity Institut of Education. Sinc 1977 h has rsidd in Nottinghamshir. In 2000, coosition studis with David Harold Cox and Gorg Nicholson culminatd in a Ph.D. dgr for original coosition bing awardd by Th Univrsity of Shffild. During his tim as a matur studnt, for a short priod, Skilbck also studid th intrprtation of organ music with Nicolas Kynaston. Of his coositional languag (usually atonal, but "listnr-frindly") Skilbck writs: Th pianofort music of Dbussy and works from Schonbrg's 1908 to 1912 priod hav had a particular influnc on my harmonic languag, which is not basd on and has not volvd into a txt-book schma. Only coarativly rarly dos my music find itslf in a ky, cration and rlas of tnsion in harmony and mlody holding a gratr intrst for m that th us of kys and thir rlationships. This givs ris to coositions oftn starting in on ara of harmony and nding in anothr. Justification for a languag nithr tonal nor srial was strngthnd on th discovry of Liszt's Bagatll without Tonality. Th triton, whol tons and th bittr-swt intrvals of minor and major svnths figur prominntly. Practical knowldg of contrapuntal organ works has bn signifcant, but I hav not bn drawn to ovrtly mathmatical procsss, though frquntly changing and unusual tim signaturs ar oftn loyd. Planning a structur, or ltting on volv, givs m much plasur, as dos finding that a passag of my music has an vocativ quality. Th xprssion of moods and human tramnts fascinats m. ***** From bar 1 - Looking up to th summit of Pic Blanc in th distanc. From bar 9 - Th cabin journy to th summit. From bar 26 - Th summit.
