This workshop can focus on all of these areas equally or on those of greatest interest. For competitive pipers and bands, the judging perspective could be included. Have pipes and practice chanter at the ready. WORKSHOP 3 (1:30-4:00) will take things covered in the previous workshop to a higher level. Although we may wish to narrow them down a bit, suggested areas for exploration and discussion are: What is musicality? This will look at what different types of listeners consider musical, and learning to prepare well for your intended audience judge, peers, folkies, pub-goers and inexperienced listeners. Advanced tuning techniques based on what top solo players and bands are currently doing around the world. What is expected of fingers, blowing and the instrument at higher levels - discussing possible ways of achieving it. We will look at what is considered current good practice. If sufficient interest, we could touch on current thinking about ensemble in pipe bands. How do you plan for a successful year? This will include goal setting and how to plan your year. This could focus on solo, band or both. In workshop 3 we can focus on solo or band playing, or a bit of each. We could look at how most techniques used for solo work can be used or adapted for band work. Pipes or practice chanter may be needed. Please Note: The instructors will be performing after the workshop at the OPS meeting at 7:30 pm that evening.
3 OPS NEWS Page 3 René Cusson Featured Performer & Piping Workshop Instructor A school teacher by profession, René (R P F) Cusson from Nanaimo, BC, on Vancouver Island, is in regular and popular demand as a piping teacher, recitalist, adjudicator, dance piper, and composer. René is one of the most widely travelled judges in North America which gives him a current and broad view of solo and band playing and tricks of the trade, at all levels. At present, René is piping with the Grade 2 City of Regina Pipe Band. He has many years of experience in teaching, organizing and heading piping workshops throughout Canada and the USA. In addition to teaching music on Vancouver Island, he travels extensively to teach bands and give workshops throughout North America. As a student of Jamie Troy Sr., René was a founding member of the City of Victoria Pipe Band. He is also an alumnus of the Simon Fraser University Band. René is also a folk musician who sings, plays, whistles, and pipes. René has performed with a variety of other musicians including renowned fiddler, Wendy MacIsaac and Beolach, The Cottars, folk icon, Eileen McGann, and the Cape Breton supergroup The Barra Mac- Neils. René had the good fortune to participate as a musician on Eileen McGann's Junonominated, 2002 album, Beyond the Storm. Currently, René is perhaps best known for his compositions. The first of many to gain international acclaim from the piping and Celtic music community was Bruce Gandy's Farewell to the Iron Horse (Gandy, Book 1). This has been one of the most popular 6/8 marches since it was published in 1989, widely recorded by pipe bands, soloists, and Celtic groups. Whether at the the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland or a gathering in South Africa or New Zealand, its unmistakable, haunting, powerful phrases captivate listeners. While many of his tunes are published in books written by other noteworthy pipers, such as Robert Worrall, Bruce Gandy, Robert MacNeil and Colin Magee, René is working on a collection of his own tunes. Throughout 2013 he will be focusing on these projects, as well as beginning recording projects in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The majority of René's background in Ceol Mor has come from Piobaireachd Society Past- President, Andrew Wright. René has also been fortunate to receive instruction in big and light music from Donald MacLeod, Robert G. Hardie, Donald Morrison, John Wilson, Sir James Campbell of Kilberry and Evan Macrae, amongst others. He credits Jamie Troy Sr. with the musical and philosophical underpinnings of his knowledge of pipe music, playing technique and sound production. In his competitive career, René has won several prizes for big and little music. He enjoys passing on his playing and composition skills to students of the craft. See page 3 for details about the piping workshop and for a workshop registration form. Rob McKendrick Featured Performer & Drum Workshop Instructor Rob s music education includes a Bachelor s degree in Music from Portland State University, and he is a graduate of the Percussion Institute of Technology. He has had nearly 40 years pipe band playing and teaching experience. He is a former member of the renowned City of Victoria Pipe Band (Grade 1) drum corps. He developed and presented the inaugural drumming program of the Coeur d Alene Summer School of Piping & Drumming, and has been on the teaching faculty there for over 15 years. Rob is an active session musician, arranger, and clinician. Happy Valentine s Day!

5 OPS NEWS Page 5 New Shilling Featured Musical Group for February Rob Barrick, Peter Yeates, Ken Larson, and Eddie Parente (from left to right) are the members of New Shilling, and they are four of the most soughtafter Celtic musicians in the Pacific Northwest. Known for their inventive, fun, and exceptional musicianship, all the members played in the fondly-recalled Full Shilling, and have played together in various combinations over the years. New Shilling has recorded two albums together. Rob Barrick moved from Canada to Portland in 1983 and played in several bands before collaborating with Peter, Ken, & Eddie in New Shilling. In addition to the numerous CDs he has recorded as part of these bands and his many guest recording spots, Rob has also recorded several solo CDs of popular pipe tunes, including one called The Standards. Jon Moritz Local Hero for February Jon Moritz has been piping since He is largely self-taught and is legally blind. Jon works from memory and has so many tunes trapped in his head that he is always going over them no matter where he is or what he is doing. He enjoys piping with Kell's Irish Pipes and Drums, the Patriot Guard Riders, and the 79th New York Volunteers (a Civil War Reenactment organization). As a piper for the Patriot Guard Riders, Jon volunteers his services to pipe for the Fallen Warriors who have died either in service for the Armed - continued on page 6 He is an approved adjudicator through the BCPA, is frequently in demand for dance competitions, and runs recording studio Barbarrick Music. Peter Yeates is a veteran singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Dublin Ireland, and he once toured as an opening act for the "Kingston Trio" and the "Limelighters". Peter has toured the United States and Canada extensively and has also performed in many venues throughout Europe, Mexico, and Asia. He was a featured artist on National Public Radio's Mountain Stage, has recorded 10 albums (three of which are solo), and several of his compositions have been recorded by other artists. Ken Larson, who moved to Oregon from Minnesota in the 1990s, began playing bodhrán in the early 1980s in Minnesota. He played there for 10 years with Gallowglass Irish Trio as lead singer & bodhrán player. One of the most sought-after bodhrán players in the Northwest because of his inventive and unique playing style, Ken has performed and recorded with some of the premier Celtic groups in the Portland area, as well as recording with many other groups and artists. Eddie Parente, originally from New Jersey, is an international composer and performer of many styles of music from Mexican Mariachi, Classical Indian, Folk, & Irish Traditional music to Swing, Classical, Jazz, and Celtic Rock music. Among the many albums he has recorded in guest spots, as band member, and as solo artist is a hit Folk album, original Swing music CDs, original and contemporary Celtic music CDs, Jazz CDs, and even multiple CDs with a Folk orchestra. Here at home, Eddie has played with the Portland State University Symphony Orchestra, has been Principle Violinist with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of multiple Jazz, Celtic, Swing, Country, and Celtic bands. For complete information about New Shilling and its CDs, or for complete information about individual band members and their recordings, view the New Shilling web site and band member pages at:

7 OPS NEWS Page 7 January OPS Meeting Recap Gordon Conn may be a man of few words (he said he tends to not like the sound of [his] own voice ), giving us little quotable info for this story, but his playing is all that and more! Highland Dance competitors are permitted to combine steps from several different National and Highland dances into a personal sequence having meaning to the dancer. It was beautiful, skillful, and amazing to watch! Gordon played numerous jigs and marches, among which were Arthur Bignold of Lochrosque, and Pretty Mary. He also played a couple Breton pieces that were lively and inventive (one had a phrase that changed each time he played it through), a Galician tune, a slow aire, and lastly, the very famous bagpipe version of the song, Thunderstruck. As we have come to expect from SFU pipers, his performance was fantastic! Photo 3: Libby Patterson Libby Patterson was our Local Hero this month, and together with our guest group of Portland Highland Dancers, performed a few solo dances one in particular that stood out for me, and that was her solo choreography dance where Photo 2: OPS Competitors Photo 1: Portland Highland Dances The Portland Highland dancers as individuals and as a group performed a number of dances, many of which were visually strong and stunning, and all, of course, were very entertaining. We were lucky to have them! We were treated to a performance of both Highland and National dances. A few among those performed were the Ghillie Chalum, the Seann Triubhas, and the Sailor s Hornpipe. The Ghillie Chalum, or Sword Dance, performed by the two youngest dancers, tells the story that before a battle, opposing sides would dance around two crossed swords. A dancer touching a blade meant that his/her army would lose the coming battle. In the Seann Triubhas, or Shedding of the Trousers, the dancer mimics Scotsmen kicking off the hated trousers they were made to wear by the English, and their joyful dancing once back in a kilt. The Sailor s Hornpipe, depicting the sailor at work, was a very powerful and unforgettable performance by the only male dancer in the group! View the evening s photos on our Picasa album, and watch the piping & dancing performances on our OPSINPDXVIDEOS YouTube channel!

We are an organized, voluntary association of people who share a love of Celtic piping, music, and dance, and our mission is not only to provide a venue where they may be shared, but also to provide a place where players can get competition practice to help improve their playing levels and skills. To advance that mission, we select monthly Local Heroes whose efforts to excel in their chosen area deserve our recognition, and we provide several scholarship gifts each year to piping and drumming players to help further develop their talents. OuOPS Membership & Competition Registration monthly meetings that provide opportunities for: 1) social interaction with others who also have a deep interest in Celtic traditions and music; 2) BCPA-standard competitions that challenge beginning and experienced pipers and drummers alike; and 3) musical entertainment that ranges from Professional grade piping to Celtic bands, folk singers, pipe bands, and dance troupes from both Scottish and Irish traditions We meet each month for competition and entertainment at The VFW Hall 825 Southeast Mill Street Portland, OR As a non-profit, mutual benefit corporation, we welcome the donations that help make our continuing mission possible. Please come and join us at our gatherings to support pipers and drummers, meet new friends, and enjoy an evening of great entertainment! Support Your Local Piper/Drummer! Thank you for your support of OPS and its scholarship recipients! OPS needs your help to get donations for the scholarship fund and to support the changes in our competition and membership fees. You can help by going out into the community and asking local businesses to donate to the OPS scholarship fund. All donations are tax deductible! The Oregon Pipers Society awarded 3 OPS and 3 PHGA scholarships last season. Pipers and drummers wanting to improve their chances for a scholarship should know that your name goes into the drawing pool once for each time you compete during the season! We would like to be able to give out at least 4 OPS scholarships for ABOUT OPS, plus the PHGA scholarships, so why not set an example like the Portland Highland Games Association, and show your support to the Pacific Northwest piping and Celtic community by giving generously to pipers and drummers young and old!
