Children participating in these programs routinely develop important life skills such as grit, stick-withit-ness, collaboration, and creativity. While some students are inspired to pursue a career in music, the vast majority of students will not. Regardless of career path, the pursuit of musical excellence can fuel their pursuit of excellence in all facets of their lives, which will benefits students as they make important choices about their future. This interactive discussion will explore how we can broaden the definition of college and career success through the lens of musical excellence, ways we can help our students realize the transferrable skills they develop when pursuing this beautiful art so deeply, and how tipping the scales towards musical excellence can help us create the social change through music we all desire. 9:40am National Orchestral Perspective. [OLAC Ballroom A/C] 11:00am Participants: Jesse Rosen, President and CEO, League of American Orchestras; Chris Jenkins, NTASF 2017 Viola Faculty; Joseph Soucy, Assistant Dean for Orchestral Studies, the Juilliard School There is an evolving national conversation amongst professional orchestras who understand that they could better serve their communities if the musicians on stage reflected the people who live there. Hear from leaders who are instrumental in leading this change and who want to explore the best ways to create a pathway to professional orchestras for students coming through El Sistema inspired programs. Share your insights on the needs of students and families in your communities and the barriers you perceive for our students interested in pursuing music as a profession. 9:40am Developing Artistry Through Purposeful Movement [OLAC Ballroom B/D] 11:00am Workshop Leader: Dr. Jeremy Dittus, Director of The Dalcroze School of the Rockies and Program, Director of the Dalcroze Academy Dalcroze Education is an experiential way of knowing music through the body. Alex Liang, NTASF 2017 Clarinet Faculty; Lecolion Washington, NTASF 2017 Bassoon Faculty Should the enjoyment that one receives from music-making be the only goal of music learning? Should we try to turn everyone into a high-quality performer? Who defines quality? In this session, we will explore how a healthy balance between effort and high-quality results can help our students navigate a cultural landscape, support the pursuit of goals they define for themselves and drive us toward the next generation of music performers, concertgoers, and arts philanthropists. We will illuminate the soft-bigotry of low expectations while acknowledging the importance of relevancy and flexibility in education. 12:00 pm - Lunch [OLAC Ballroom A/C] 1:30pm Boxed lunches provided at the Cathedral Center. 9

Is it the pursuit or achievement of musical excellence that changes the trajectory of our students, families and communities that we serve? After seven years of program adjustments, research, and implementation of 500 students from ages 5-21, Stanford Thompson examined key issues within Play On Philly's programmatic and organizational culture that needed immediate attention. He has challenged some long-held assumptions from his study of El Sistema through the Abreu Fellows Program and work with over 50 US Sistema-inspired programs and is leading his organization and staff in making some radical change. Learn from his case study in progress as Stanford discusses real-time challenges with with his colleague, Jessica Zweig, who is the Site Director of POP's largest and oldest program. What are the assumptions and challenges along the pathway to these golden opportunities? How can organizations and teachers support the students application and audition processes, and the festival experience itself?
