4 This year, on November 23, Krzysztof Penderecki will celebrate his 85 th birthday anniversary. Next year, 2019, will mark 60 years from his spectacular debut, when, after breaking the seals, the unknown artist was announced the laureate of first three prizes in the Competition for Young Composers, organised by the Union of Polish Composers. Now, this born in Debica, educated in Cracow, residing in Cracow and Lusławice world citizen, is considered one of the greatest composers of late 20 th century and, hopefully as long as possible, early 21 st century. For his artistic work, he has been awarded with the most prestigious national, not only Polish (Order of the White Eagle), but also European, Southern and Northern American, Near Eastern and Japanese honours, more than forty titles of Doctor honoris causa by major world universities and academies of music and numerous awards (e.g. four Grammy Awards). Most of his, almost 150 compositions, are played all around the world. Historic events are signalised by his works, for example Passion according to Lukas, written for the 700 th anniversary of consecration of the Münster Cathedral; Magnificat, for 1200 th anniversary of Salzburg Cathedral; Paradise Lost for 200 th anniversary of Declaration of Independence by the United States; Seven Gates of Jerusalem for a jubilee of 3000 years of Jerusalem, IV Symphony for National French Orchestra, for the 200 th anniversary of The Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of the Citizen, II Cello Concerto for a 100 th anniversary of Berliner Philharmonics, a Viola Concerto for the 200 th birthday anniversary of Simon Bolívar or a Hymn to St. Adalbert ordered by the city of Gdansk for its 1000 years. If I were to find words that define, what Krzysztof Penderecki is for musical culture of our times, I think that the most accurate would be path-setting. In the sixties, his radical language of music and innovative way of using classical instruments, opened concert halls for avant-garde. All protests of some critics or ensembles went to waste. The listeners were captivated by the expression of this unique music. They were also on the composer s side when he betrayed the avant- -garde and, not resigning from the innovative language, put a spiritual element to it. He was the first to have a courage, in times of negation of everything traditional, to say that the future has to have its grounds in the past, and that a process of creation is something much more than skillful arrangement of sounds. Equally surprising and though, innovative was his turn to a late romantic symphonics. In this area, he has continued, in his original, unique way, the ideas of the great artists of the turn of the 19 th and 20 th centuries, giving them new, vivid shape. However, Krzysztof Penderecki has set and is still setting the paths not only in the area of composition. In 1972 he took position of a rector of the Cracow Academy of Music and he
5 was leading it for 15 years, devoting all his time and effort to transform it into a modern academy and to introduce it to the world of music education that meets the needs of a changing world. He has educated several generations of, not only Polish, composers. Thinking of young musicians, near his own residence in Lusławice, Krzysztof Penderecki has founded a European Centre for Music, a unique in all Poland campus, consisting of a concert hall, recording studio, rehearsal rooms, a library and a residential-hotel area. Here, young musicians meet the masters of virtuosity, composers and prominent figures of the world of humanities at various master courses, workshops, concerts and lectures. Because the mission of The Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music is possibly the most thorough and cross-curricular development of young talents. It is hard not to mention the composer s passion for gardening. A nearly thirty-hectare park in Lusławice, where almost every tree was planted by him, is also something unique on the map of Poland. Krzysztof Penderecki finds many resemblances between the work of a gardener and of a composer. Let s have a look at a tree he says it teaches us, that the piece of art must have double roots one in the earth and one in the sky. Krzysztof Penderecki s music has also rooted in the hearts of the listeners, who are still curiously waiting for his new compositions. Hopefully, may it be a lot of them to come!
6 fot. Bruno Fidrych The Orchestra of Beethoven s Academy is one of the foremost and, at the same time, the youngest symphonic orchestra in Poland. It is formed by enthusiasts the most outstanding students and graduates of European music academies, such as Cracow Academy of Music, Hochschule Für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart, Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Royal Music Conservatoire in Brussels, Conservatoire International de Musique in Paris and Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz. The orchestra was founded in 2003, following the success at the 53 rd Jünger Künstler Festival in German Bayreuth. 10 ST. CATHERINE S. The church, whose construction was completed in the late 14th century, was founded by King Casimir the Great for the Augustian monks, brought here from Prague. Besides St. Mary s, St. Catherine s is the finest example of Kraków Gothic; the purest forms of gothic crystallized here. The presbytery with the spider web of flying buttresses, gives the church a light and slim air. The basilica interior features an elongated choir and an early baroque altar with the panel Mystical Nuptials of St. Catherine by the 17th-century Kraków-based artist Andrzej Wenesta. On the north the church is a abutted by a gothic cloister adorned with remarkable paintings (14th 16th c.), among which Entombed Christ and Madonna the Comforter with St. Nicholas of Tolentino and Augustine (in a separate chapel) are of note. transl.
