Revelations 12:10 Double Chorus and Orchestra The Résumés of our Seven Candidates Johann Sebastian Bach b. Eisenach, 31 March 1685 (37 years old) Bach learned to play violin and harpsichord with his father, Johann Ambrosius, a court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach. Orphaned at 9, young Johann sang in the boy s choir at the monastery at Lüneberg. After a brief stint in 1703 as a violinist in Weimar, Bach became organist at the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt. He then briefly served at St. Blasius in Mühlhausen as organist in He soon took a post for the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar, serving as court organist and playing in the orchestra, eventually becoming its leader in Bach left Weimar in December 1717 for a post as Kapellmeister for the court at Cöthen. Johann Friedrich Fasch - b. Weimar, 15 April 1688 (34 years old) Fasch began his musical studies singing in the boy s choirs at Suhl and Weissenfels. When his voice broke, Kuhnau recruited him for the Leipzig Thomasschule where he established a lifelong friendship with the older Telemann. While a student at the University of Leipzig he founded a very successful collegium musicum. He soon became so well known as a composer that the Duke of Saxe-Zeitz commissioned him to write a pair of operas. He continued his compositional studies with Graupner at Darmstadt. After holding several positions, including violinist in Bayreuth, court secretary and organist in Greiz and Kapellmeister to Count Morzin in Prague, early in 1722 Fasch accepted the position of court Kapellmeister in Zerbst. Christoph Graupner b. Kirchberg, January 13, 1683 (39 years old) Graupner received his first musical instruction from his organist uncle, Nicolaus Kuester. He went on to the University of Leipzig where he earned a degree in law (as had Kuhnau but unlike Telemann who never completed his.) He also studied music there with Kuhnau. In 1705 Graupner left Leipzig to play the harpsichord in the Hamburg Opera orchestra, alongside a young violinist named Handel. While there, Graupner composed three operas. In 1709 Graupner accepted a post at the court of Hesse-Darmstadt and in 1711 became the director of the court orchestra. Georg Friedrich Kauffmann b. Ostermondra, Thuringia, 14 Feb 1679 (43 years old) Studied keyboard and composition with Alberti in Merseburg. Kauffmann succeeded his teacher as organist at the court of Duke Christian I of Saxony and at the Merseburg Cathedral. He was later promoted to court Kapellmeister. Christian Friedrich Rolle b. Halle, 14 April 1681 (41 years old) Like Bach, Fasch and Graupner, Rolle was born into a musical family. He received his earliest training from his father Simon who played shawm in the town waits. In 1709 he became the cantor at the St. Benedicti church in Quedlinburger. By 1716 he was the organist at the Marienkirch in Halle. In 1721 he took a combined position in Magdeburg (similar to the job description in Leipzig); teaching at the Altstädtischen Gymnasium and directing music at the St. John Church. Georg Balthasar Schott b. Eisenach, 22 Oct 1686 (36 years old) After attending the Gotha Gymnasium, Schott studied at the Universities of Jena and Leipzig. In 1720 he became the organist at the Neukirche in Leipzig and director of the city's collegium musicum. Georg PhillippTelemann b. Magdeburg, 14 March 1681 (41 years old) Telemann began his music studies at age 10, composing his first opera by age 12. In 1701, he entered the Leipzig University intending to study law (at his mother s insistence.) It was not long before his musical talent was discovered, and soon he was commissioned to write music for two of the city s main churches. He subsequently founded a 40-member collegium musicum to give concerts of his music. The next year, Telemann became the director of Leipzig s opera house and kantor of one of its churches. His growing popularity began to threaten the elder Kuhnau. Telemann left Leipzig in 1705 to become Kapellmeister for the court of Count

4 Erdmann II in Sorau, Poland. He was later appointed as a leader of the singers at the court in Eisenach, where he met Bach. In 1721 he was appointed musical director of the five main churches in Hamburg. Here Telemann wrote two cantatas for each Sunday, as well as other sacred music for special occasions, all while teaching singing and music theory and directing another collegium musicum, which gave weekly or bi-weekly performances.
