3 GAPUWIYAK VAMP Festival The VAMP Festival in Gapuwiyak is where school groups come together to record their song. They also film to make a video clip. The song that gets recorded is an original song that the students have written themselves. How do you write an original song? An original song is one that has been created new, not copied. Original can also mean first, but for a song, it did not exist, then it got created, it becomes the original! There are many different ways a song can be created and no way is better than another. There are also many different parts to a song. These are called elements. The main elements are lyrics, melody, rhythm and harmony Lyrics = words of the song Melody = the tune you sing the words to rhythm = the repeated pattern of sounds (you could call it the Beat) harmony = other part of the song, not the tune. Could be the chord played on guitar Let s concentrate on the lyrics The songs that each group brought to VAMP Festival had to be written about the theme Wonder. So the lyrics had to be something about Wonder. Next year, the theme will be Rise, let s have a go at writing some lyrics about Rise! Song words use a structure. These are put together like building blocks! Verse The section that tells most of the story of the song. Each verse will have basically the same melody, but different lyrics. It leads to the chorus. It gets called part A Is the part that repeats. The lyrics are often simple and direct, perhaps the song tittle is included. This section can be called part B These are other parts that could be in a song too, but they are not essential, there can be a pre- chorus and a Bridge or Middle 8. 4 ORIGINAL SONG Look at the first verse of One People, one Voice Walking on the beach, early in the morning Feel the rhythm of the sea, nature s perfect harmony Every little detail, so unique Reflecting light on you and me, creating unity It has 4 lines and the 2nd and 4th line rhyme. So the next verse should go something like; Line 1 Blah blah blah blah blah Line 2 Blah blah blah blah RISE Line 3 Blah blah blah blah bla Line 4 Blah blah blah SUR- PRISE Now you need to work out what Rise means so you can write about it. You could use an online dictionary; You could use a Thesaurus to find out some other words that mean rise; Once you know what your song is about you can brainstorm ideas for the actual words. 5 VAMPing Ground Would you like to get the VAMPtv crew to your school? You can either take some exciting photos, make a video or write a pitch to impress the VAMP production team that your school will be the right one to come and film at! You could also do a mixture of any of these! A pitch is a piece of writing or talking that makes the puts forward your opinion or idea. It will make the audience believe your opinion. In this case, the purpose of the pitch is to bring the VAMPtv team to your school. A good pitch will quickly and briefly introduce the school and community and summarize the points about the school/community that you feel will make it attractive to VAMPtv producers (and audience). In writing, this could also be called a persuasive text a piece of writing that sets out to persuade someone, to make them believe what you say is right! To plan out your pitch you can use this guide: What are some good things about your school? for example, happy kids What are some good things about your community? for example, Beautiful location, What special talents or skills do students have? for example, backflips, art, Good things about your school Good things about your community Special skills or talents of students L L 3.1 Communication CrA3.1 Creating Arts ideas R L3.4 Learning- how- to- learn
