2 ACTIVITIES TO DO ON YOUR OWN (OR WITH A FRIEND!) Wanna B By the Lady Beats This song has a strong message, listen carefully and see if you can rap along with the song Chorus The choice is yours to be So be free, be what you wanna (want to) be Freedom is your destiny Be who you wanna be X 2 If you want to be free, follow me Be the river that flows free Like a waterfall crashing down, there is no better sound All my people gather round, now, gather round Freedom is the power, power from within Let s speak for our rights, come on let s begin Our past, our present, our future is what we have to build, together let s hold up the shield Of life, celebrate, make no mistake, take away the heartache, Replace, with love, descending above, be free as a dove, Lift the spirits up, resurrect the ancestors Embrace the life within, this is who we ll be, the land is ours, we ve been here for hours Never be cowards, Proud, original, aboriginal. Forever we stand on the red land. Where the rain hits the sand let s join hands, Do the culture dance, paint up our bodies, our beauty is unmatched Red Yellow Black, this is where we re at! Chorus Be free like a bird, fly through the earth, spread your wings, feel the wind Sing with the wind, standing on the ground, touch down with the sound Hear the heart beat, from the centre, see the red rock as we enter Recognise, respect, when the sun sets, the colours that you see We re there to be free, my people, we hold the key, to what we wanna be Chorus RL 3.1 Communication L L3.23Socio- cultural understanding
3 Wanna B By the Lady Beats (cont) Wanna B Word search Activity The language used in this song is strong. It matches the message of the song. Be strong and Proud, the song tells us. The message is made stronger because the singers use strong language themselves. Freedom is the power, power from within Never be cowards, Proud, original, aboriginal. This is called EMOTIVE language, as it is intended to stir up the emotions Here are some words that are considered EMOTIVE, see if you can put the word into the sentence to make it make sense! Vicious Furious Exciting Dreadful Ecstatic Ferocious The dog was To see the acrobat do a somersault was very The broken car made him She was so happy she felt The tiger was trapped. When the window broke he felt RL 3.1 Communication RL 3.2 Sociocultural understanding RL3.4 Learning- how- to- learn R L3.2 Socio- cultural understanding
4 Wanna B by the Lady Beats (cont) As well as strong or emotive language, the song also uses METAPHOR to give us the message. Metaphor is an old favourite in poetry and songs, it describes something as being like something else. Be free LIKE a BIRD. When we think of a bird flying through the air, it certainly is a good example of Freedom. No one tells the bird what to do, it doesn t have to go to school to learn how to be a bird! Here are some animals to use in your own metaphor. The first one is done for you Clues! Fish, train, eagle, He is STRONG like a BUFFALO lion, snake Swims, sneaky Fierce, powerful, Fly, slippery, silent, RL 3.1 Communication RL 3.2 Sociocultural understanding R L3.1 Language structures and features
5 Djuki Mala The dancers from Djuki Mala are now on their national tour, can you help them find their way to all their gigs!! Find these towns on the map and mark in the way they can go! (these are not ALL the gigs they are doing!) NT - Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, NSW Lismore Queensland - The Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Victoria - Geelong, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Melbourne, NSW - Orange, Sydney, Newcastle, Tamworth, Wollongong, South Australia - Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Pirie, Adelaide, Mt Gambier Victoria - Mildura! RL#3.1#Communication! WL3.4#Learning/how/to/learn!!! 6 BEAT OF THE WEEK Justin Bond is from Maningrida originally but he now attends Casuarina Senior College in Darwin. He learns the drums with a tutor from the NT Music School. In this first Beat of the Week he introduces the drumkit. When you learn something new, it is very useful to know what you are talking about! This is called the TERMINOLOGY it means the words (and terms) that describe a particular subject. This means that all drummers can talk to each other and know what they are talking about!! Activity Label the parts of the drumkit RL 3.1 Communication Cymbals High Hat Snare drum Floor Tom drum Rack Tom drums Kick (or Bass) drum As a bonus, can you label the CRASH and the RIDE cymbal?
