2 Welcome to the New Season We are delighted that all 6 concerts this season will be held in the Marryat Hall. As usual, we open with a string quartet, this time the outstanding young Castalian Quartet who played for us in March 2013 and who return with a new first violinist, Siri Simonen. Siri will be playing a Guadagnini violin from 1760 on loan from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. In November James Gilchrist (tenor) and Anna Tilbrook (piano), in their first visit to Dundee, perform a programme of songs by Grieg, Schubert, Schumann (including his Dichterliebe), Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Mendelssohn. Their recording of Schubert s Winterreise was declared recording of the month in the BBC Music Magazine. The Pro Musica String Trio, with the well-known pianist Benjamin Frith, returns as the Frith Quartet in December to play a programme of piano quartets. In January 2015 we welcome the Jubilee Quartet. This is the first visit of this young quartet, which has been gaining in international reputation since its formation in For our February concert six players from the wind section of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra bring a different sound to the platform with a delightful programme of works by Weber, Mozart, Poulenc and Beethoven. Our season ends with a cello and piano recital by Naomi Boole-Masterson and Fali Pavri with works by Brahms and Rachmaninov, and some more unusual pieces by Sally Beamish and John Mayer. 3 Tue 7th October Castalian Quartet Mozart Ravel Schubert String Quartet in E flat K428 String Quartet String Quartet in D minor Death and the Maiden Formed in 2010, the Castalian Quartet achieved success very early. In 2011 they won both a Royal Overseas League award and a Tunnell Trust award as an outstanding young chamber-music ensemble. In that year too they were chosen by the British Council to represent the UK in a concert tour of South China. Since their visit to Dundee in March 2013 the group have chosen a new first violinist, the outstanding young Finnish player Sini Simonen. Sini has won first prize at the International Violin Solo Competition in Cremona and has played solo with a number of European orchestras such as the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra. Sini plays a Guadagnini violin from 1760 on loan from the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

The Duncan McDonald Memorial Concert Heine, Byron and Shakespeare Three poets who inspired the world The versatility of the famous tenor James Gilchrist is astonishing. His concert appearances cover everything from Monteverdi s Vespers and the great Passions of Bach to Gilbert and Sullivan, and include the Dream of Gerontius, Britten s War Requiem and On Wenlock Edge. His operatic performances include Quint in Turn of the Screw and Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte. In song recitals his usual partner is Anna Tilbrook, a pianist who specialises in song recitals and chamber music. She has accompanied many of the finest singers, including Mark Padmore, Bryn Terfel, Barbara Bonney, Ian Bostridge and Christopher Maltman.

5 Wed 3rd December Frith Piano quartet Suk Dvořák Brahms Piano Quartet Piano Quartet no. 2 in E flat Piano Quartet no. 1 in G minor The Pro Musica String Trio return to Dundee with the well-known pianist Benjamin Frith, to play three piano quartets. The violinist Robert Heard played for both the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, where he was associate leader, before deciding to turn freelance. Louise Williams too played the violin, before switching to the viola when she joined the Chilingirian Quartet. She plays an Amati viola of Richard Jenkinson, who is principal cellist of the CBSO, plays a cello by Grancino of about Since 2000 these three string players have been playing piano quartets with Benjamin Frith, a pupil of Fanny Waterman, who won a gold medal at the 1989 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Masters Competition in Israel.

6 Tue 13th January Jubilee String Quartet Mozart String Quartet in B flat K589 Mendelssohn String Quartet no. 2 in A minor Beethoven String Quartet in F op The Jubilee Quartet was formed in London in After graduation they were able to benefit from masterclasses given by the Skampa, Wihan and Chilingirian quartets. They won first prize in the 2010 Val Tidone International Chamber Music Competition and the St Martin s Chamber Music Competition of The quartet held a Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music from 2012 to 2013, and have recently played in the Purcell Room and the Wigmore Hall. They have now performed quite widely throughout the UK, and their continental tours have included a performance in the presence of the former Czech president Vaclav Havel.

7 Wed 18th February SCO Winds Weber Mozart Mozart Poulenc Mozart Beethoven Adagio and Rondo Divertimento in B flat K270 Serenade in E flat K375 Sonata for Two Clarinets Divertimento in B flat K240 Sextet When the music critic of The Herald, Michael Tumelty, first heard this wind sextet from the SCO, he could not contain his excitement. He was, he said, mesmerised by some of the creamiest, most stylish wind sextet playing I have heard in 50 years of concert-going. Their playing was characterised by precision, subtlety, immaculate ensemble... and those miraculous qualities of listening, watching, concentration and super-alert responsiveness between colleagues. Describing them as one of the best ensembles in the world, he added their playing of Mozart s K375 Serenade was heart-stopping. All of the pieces Tumelty heard in Glasgow will be played for us in Dundee.

8 Wed 18th March Naomi Boole-Masterson (cello) Fali Pavri (Piano) Beamish Brahms John Mayer Rachmaninov Bridging the Day Sonata in E minor Prabhanda Sonata in G minor Music-lovers in Dundee are familiar with the exciting string-playing of the Scottish Ensemble. It was no surprise when one of their members, Naomi Boole- Masterson, proved such a success when playing the Elgar Cello Concerto with Dundee Symphony Orchestra in 2013 that she was asked by DSO to return this season to play the Dvořák. Her pianist-husband is Fali Pavri, professor of piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who studied in Moscow and London, and who, while still a student, was chosen by Mstislav Rostropovich to be his pianist on a tour of India. Pavri has recorded with the RSNO, and his CD featuring the work of Swiss composer Volkmar Andreae was judged outstanding by International Record Review.
