7 Rudy Van Gelder is responsible for the famous Blue Note sound, having recorded almost every session from 1953 to 1971 in his New Jersey studios. Fascinated with radio, sound, and electronics from an early age, Rudy Van Gelder was a self-taught audio engineer who was also operating his own optometry practice when a Gil Melle session he d recorded caught the ear of Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. For the Record is not only a towering achievement in Jazz, but it chronicles a milestone in American Culture. Van Gelder brought the art of jazz recording to a new level, capturing the full sound and power of the musicians with revealing clarity.
