13 Program Notes continued... and after a brief development section, the two themes recur in reverse order. Near the end, they are combined with a quotation (proclaimed by the ubiquitous trombones) from the Coronation Scene of Moussorgsky s Boris Goudonov, where the chorus sings the Russian word slava!, meaning, glory! In this way, the composer is paying homage to his friend Mistislav Rostropovich, called Slava by his friends and to whom the overture is fondly dedicated. The overture was written to celebrate Rostropovich s inauguration as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., in Leonard Bernstein, the son of a Russian immigrant, was born near Boston, Mass., and studied composition at Harvard. Called an authentic American hero, an arts hero, Bernstein had a distinguished career as composer and conductor. Someone to Watch Over Me / arranged by Warren Barker Someone to Watch Over Me is a song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin from the musical Oh, Kay! (1926), where it was introduced by Gertrude Lawrence. It has been performed by numerous artists since its debut and is a jazz standard as well as a key work in the Great American Songbook. Jurassic Park Soundtrack Highlights / arranged by Paul Lavender This long-awaited film from Stephen Spielberg was a huge hit. Once again, the majestic and memorable score from John Williams gives the film a bigger-than-life aura that brings the film s drama, emotion, and imagination to the forefront. Paul Lavender s adaptation for band includes many of the score s themes - a wonderful way to delight an audience. Songs include: End Credits, Journey To The Island, Opening Titles, Theme From Jurassic Park. Bohemian Rhapsody Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by the British rock band Queen. It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band s 1975 album A Night at the Opera. Bohemian Rhapsody is in the style of a stream-ofconsciousness nightmare that has unusual song structure, especially for popular music. The song has no chorus, instead consisting of seemingly disjointed sections including operatic segments, an a cappella passage, and a heavy rock solo. Although critical reaction was initially mixed, especially in America, Bohemian Rhapsody is often considered to be Queen s magnum opus and one of their alltime greatest songs. Mercury refused to explain his composition other than saying it was about relationships; the band is still protective of the song s secret. Following the single s release, Mercury said: It s one of those songs which has such a fantasy feel about it. I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them... Bohemian Rhapsody didn t just come out of thin air. Selections from Porgy and Bess arranged by Calvin Custer Porgy and Bess is an opera, first performed in 1935, with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. It was based on DuBose Heyward s novel Porgy and the play of the same name which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. All three works deal with African American life in the fictitious Catfish Row (based on the real-life Cabbage Row) in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s. Originally conceived by Gershwin as an American folk opera, Porgy and Bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers a daring and visionary artistic choice at the time. Gershwin chose African American Eva Jessye as the choral director for the opera. Incorporating a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into the classical art form of opera, Gershwin considered it his finest work. Young Person s Guide to John Williams arranged by Jay Bocook Young-at-heart moviegoers of all ages have been treated to the masterful movie themes of John Williams for decades. A magnificent collection of some of his most memorable melodies from the silver screen; Prologue from Hook, Theme from E.T., Hedwig s Theme, and Raiders March. Slava! by Leonard Bernstein transcribed by Clare Grundman The first theme of Slava! is a vaudevillian razz-matazz tune filled with side-slipping modulations and sliding trombones. The second theme is a canon,
15 Program Notes Technology This piece was written in 1998 by Jim Casella. He wanted to challenge the concert percussion ensemble with the techno style groove as well as give the studetns something they can relate to. Equinox Equinox is a piece inspired by the equal parts of dark and light that happen during an equinox. Its dark melodies and drum interludes make it an exciting piece that ends with incredible force. I m A Believer arranged by Johnnie Vinson I m a Believer is a song composed by Neil Diamond and recorded by the band The Monkees in 1966 with the lead vocals by Micky Dolenz. The single, produced by Jeff Barry, hit the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 31, 1966 and remained there for seven weeks, becoming the biggest-selling record for all of 1967, and one of the biggest of all time. This song was also covered by Smash Mouth and Eddie Murphy in 2001, as part of the soundtrack to the movie Shrek (the band also released the song on its self-titled album). Legend of Fort Apache by Jerry Williams Very bold and powerful, yet playable with young groups and with limited instrumentations, this overture-like piece is a perfect concert piece. Bands and audiences love the big, energetic sound - a truely tribal feel. Jerry Williams was blessed with delightful sense of humor which was reflected in many of his compositions. His first publication came in 1985 with his popular Free Spirit Overture. He was also co-writer of the Command Performance Band Book and he composed over 50 popular band compositions. Kokomo arranged by Michael Sweeney Kokomo is a song written by John Phillips, Scott McKenzie, Mike Love and Terry Melcher and recorded by The Beach Boys in It was released as a single in 1988 at Elektra Records and became a No. 1 Hit in the United States and Australia. The single was released to coincide with the release of the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail, and its subsequent soundtrack. Highlights from Beauty and The Beast arranged by John Moss composers Menken & Ashman Beauty and the Beast is a traditional French fairy tale, and the story was first published in The best-known written version was published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, and an English translation appeared in The story involves Belle (a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small, provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced affections of conceited Gaston), and the Beast (a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love). Highlights from Beauty and the Beast features songs from the 1991 Disney animated film includ Wind Ensemble Piccolo Taylor Weary Flute Shirin Bhagwagar * Young Wook Kang * Natasha Kohanzadeh * Lily Martinez * Andrew Ohanian Rebecca Steinberg Christina Tsai Taylor Weary Oboe Ben Deese Alex Frumkin Michael Kaplan Rachel Moore English Horn Rachel Moore Bassoon Elsie Doolan Claire Perelman Clarinet Garrett Cheung Karin Chung * David Cline Richard Dobeck * Steven Gordon Ali Kivnick Esme Levy Scott Operman Tyler Oyakawa * Katy Schorr * Shiori Takemori Roland Templeman Bass Clarinet Jonathon Berger Aaron Squier * Contra Alto Clarinet Thomas Nagata Soprano Saxophone Brody Danielson * Alto Saxophone Lily Bernstein * Gigi Lake Adriana Wong Tenor Saxophone Brody Danielson * Aaron Friedman * Baritone Saxophone Colin Rush Trumpet Zoe Billington Anthony Fertino * Omri Kuba * Drew Latzke * Aaron Rennell Jake Schmidt Greg Stearns Horn Julia Blanchard Sky Crane Melissa Kravets Steven Luis POPS Concert - June 6th 2009 Trombone Logan Born * Matthew France Jared Hammer Michael Masatani * Darren Morris * Bass Trombone Josh Harling * Robinson Schulze * Euphonium Ali Chamas Tuba Peter Bennion * Cameron Lampart Max Majdecki * Percussion Jack Cramer Mariam Kaddoura s Michael Lagerfelt * s Andrew Locke Jason Pitts Joseph Yu * Class of 2009 s Percussion Ensemble
