6 4 All About the Band Established in 1915, the SAMOHI Band is one of the oldest high school bands in California. It currently comprises four concert bands, two jazz bands*, the Viking Marching Band, Winter Percussion Unit and Winter Guard. The Viking Marching Band & Color Guard perform for home football games, compete in field tournaments and march in parades, including the annual Santa Monica Fourth of July Parade. This fall the Viking Band qualified for the Southern California Scholastic Band and Orchestra Assn. (SCSBOA) Marching Championships. The Winter Percussion Unit was formed in Under the direction of Jeremy Miller they scored so well that the American Drum Line Assn. promoted them through two levels to Scholastic A, the highest division in their tier. Led by Manager Kyle Miller and Technician Jody Anderson, the Winter Guard has also been very successful, qualifying for the 2010 Winter Guard Assn. Championships. Concert band instruction is offered at four levels. Concert Winds is the entry-level band, focusing on skills and rudiments that form the foundation for musical growth and participation in more advanced bands. The Concert Band is a mid-level ensemble, performing pieces written for intermediate to advanced high school ensembles. The second highest group, the Symphonic Student performers were treated to a special rate on formal wear rental at Phone: elitetuxedo@hotmail.com Winds, operates at a level comparable to that of the top ensemble at most high schools; students perform works written for advanced high school and college level bands. The Wind Ensemble is reserved for the most advanced music students. Members are selected through a highly competitive audition process and perform literature written for college and professional ensembles. All four ensembles study with two directors whose combined experience in music education totals over sixty years. Lead Director Michael J. Corrigan received his bachelor s degree in music from California State University, Long Beach and has been teaching music for over forty years. His bands have consistently received superior ratings in local competitions and festivals throughout the Western United States, Canada, and Europe, including Unanimous Gold recognitions at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Mr. Corrigan has served as president of both the SCSBOA and the California Band Directors Association (CBDA). He is currently an SCSBOA Head Judge, adjudicating festival and marching band events nationwide, and he is frequently called to conduct honor groups. Mr. Corrigan music education honors include the John Philip Sousa National Foundation s Legion of Honor Award, the California Music Educators Assn. Band Educator of the Year Award, and the CBDA Distinguished Service Award. Director Terry Sakow earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from UCLA and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois. During his 21-year tenure at SAMOHI, the number of Band students has grown from 80 to about 270. Many of his past students have themselves become professional musicians or music instructors, and his ensembles have received top honors at adjudicated performances. Under his direction, the SAMOHI Wind Ensemble performed in Carnegie Hall in Mr. Sakow is also the principal trumpet player of the Santa Monica College Orchestra and the Santa Monica College Concert Band. *See page 10 for Jazz Band information. 10 Program Notes James Swearingen is an American composer and arranger currently serving as Chair of the Music Education Department at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. A prolific composer of Concert Literature, he is one of the most frequently performed composers of band music in the world today. The Invicta Overture a tribute to Swearingen s mentor Mark S. Kelly, Director of Bands at Bowling Green State University embodies its name: unconquered. Jay Chattaway (b. 1946) is an American composer known primarily for his work on film and television, including scores for the Star Trek series from 1987 to He earned two degrees from West Virginia University and attended the Eastman School of Music, from which he was called to serve in the U.S. Navy Band. Excalibur s majestic, British tone reminds us of the mythical moment when young Arthur, as buoyant as the piece s trumpet solo, approaches the sword and draws it from the stone, proving himself to be the once and future king. Robert Sheldon (b. 1954) is an internationally recognized clinician, conductor and composer. He has taught in Florida and Illinois public schools, and has been a conductor and professor at Florida State University. Sheldon currently serves as the Concert Band Editor for the Alfred Publishing Company. Charleston Harbor Celebration was commissioned by the Charleston Community Band to honor its past conductors for their faithful service to education, music and musicians. The piece captures the beauty and energy of historic Charleston Harbor, the southernmost point of English settlement during the 17th century Great Migration to America. Michael Sweeney (b. 1952) is a graduate of Indiana University. He taught music in Ohio and Indiana and is currently Director of Band Publications for Hal Leonard Corp. On the Wings of Swallows was commissioned in 1999 by the North Syracuse Central School District in memory of Pat Hays, a ninth-grader and promising alto saxophone musician who died after a tragic snowmobiling accident, shortly before the band s winter concert. Then Band Director Holly Bossert called for the commission, stating, Where words fail, music speaks. A very dramatic piece, On the Wings of Swallows opens with a call and response, has a slow section featuring a haunting alto sax solo (played tonight by a trio), and ultimately builds to a climactic brass fanfare. The title was inspired by a couplet from Shakespeare s Richard III: True hope is swift, and flies with swallow's wings / Kings it makes gods, and meaner creatures kings. Karl L. King ( ) was a circus bandleader and composer. A native of Paintersville, Ohio, he was a self-taught musician with little schooling. Although he published more than 300 works, it was his 1913 march Barnum and Bailey s Favorite that made him famous worldwide. The Big Cage is a Circus Galop. It served to heighten the excitement of King s audiences, as wild animals were paraded around the Big Top. Composer J. Clifton Williams, Jr. ( ) began his musical career playing in the Little Rock High School Band. He later attended Louisiana State University and the Eastman School of Music. As a professional horn player, he performed with the New Orleans and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras. The latter commissioned Fiesta, one of five Symphonic Dances commemorating the Orchestra s 25th anniversary in Tonight the Symphonic Winds invite you to participate vicariously in a San Antonio Mexican fiesta and experience what Williams called, the pageantry of Latin American celebration street bands, bull fights, bright costumes... the colorful legacy of a proud people." 8 SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS
11 Steven Reineke (b. 1970) is a rising star from Cincinnati, Ohio, and the newly appointed Music Director of the New York Pops. He has published dozens of compositions, and over 100 arrangements. The Witch and the Saint tells the story of Helena and Sibylla, twin sisters born in Germany in The girls have the gift of foresight a blessing for Helena, raised in a convent and labeled a saint, but a curse on Sibylla, who is seen as a witch and imprisoned. Helena rescues Sibylla, but the pair are quickly pursued by angry villagers. The music, at times triumphant and hopeful, ultimately reflects the twins tragic fate: in desperation Helena drinks poison and dies; Sibylla rides off, never to be seen again. Happily, the same will not be said of the normally overshadowed instruments (tenor sax, bass clarinet, and horn) that are granted independence in Reineke s widely popular symphonic poem. Tonight s youngest featured composer John Mackey (b. 1973) hails from New Philadelphia, Ohio. He holds a masters degree from the Juilliard School and a B.A. from the Cleveland Institute of Music. For several years he focused on modern dance, and his works have been performed around the world. The first version of Strange Humors was a student piece for string quartet and djembe (a skin-covered hand drum shaped like a goblet). Mackey transcribed it for wind ensemble at the behest of the American Bandmasters Association. The piece merges the modal melodies and syncopated rhythms of middle Eastern music with African drumming. It has been described by music critics as awesome and rockin. Dmitry Shostakovich ( ) ranks among the most celebrated modern composers. Although his music was periodically banned by the Stalinist bureaucracy, Shostakovich achieved great fame in the Soviet Union. His style juxtaposed a wide variety of 20th century trends such as neo-classism, post-romanticism, and elements of the grotesque. His Prelude, Op. 34, No. 14 was published in H. Robert Reynolds, an important figure in the evolution of modern wind ensembles, transcribed the piece while he was Director of Bands at the University of Michigan. The Golden Age was Shostakovich s first ballet. The story of a team of virtuous Soviet athletes visiting the corrupt and decadent West, it may be the only classical work to include a game of soccer. During their sojourn the players are subjected to temptations, torments and, finally, unjust imprisonment by the evil bourgeoisie. They are released only after the local working classes join their Russian comrades in an uprising, culminating in the defiant Dance of Solidarity. The Polka, part of a lively series of dances from the Music Hall scene, is by far the most famous piece from the ballet. From Lewis All Music Guide (AMG, 2008): Once upon a time in America the distended, crooked melodic line in Shostakovich s Polka stood as the ne plus ultra of irreverent modernism. Quinto Maganini ( ) was a flautist, conductor, composer and arranger from Fairfield, California. James Barnes (b in Hobart, OK) is a composer of contemporary wind band music. Barnes composed his Third Symphony shortly after the death of his young daughter Natalie, later calling it the most emotionally draining work he d ever composed. The third movement, Barnes farewell to his daughter, is joyful and represents what his life would have been, had she lived. The Finale is built around the 18th century Lutheran hymn I Am Jesus Little Lamb, in which the lamb returns to the Shepherd, There within His arms to rest. Walter M. Kendall (early 1900s-late 1990s) was born in England. He served for over 20 years in England and India as a conductor/artist in the British Musician s Corps. He had three children and eventually followed two of them to the U.S., retiring with his wife to Chicago, IL. Tonight s finale is a thrilling surround sound performance of his classic Glorious Victory. WINTER CONCERT
12 Essayist Gerald Early once said, "When they study our civilization two thousand years from now, there will only be three things that Americans will be known for: the Constitution, baseball, and jazz music." Samohi s jazz program proudly passes the torch to the next generation. This year a total of fifty students enrolled in the program, with Jazz Band 2 directed by Lead Band Director Michael Corrigan and Jazz Band 1 directed by Tom Whaley, the school district's Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. Student musicians also perform in the Jazz Combo, a small group that raises funds for the program. Jazz Band Director Tom Whaley s ensembles have won many awards throughout the state. He has been featured in the Los Angeles Times and has received both the Burbank Mayor's Commendation and NBC s Crystal Apple Award. He earned a B.A. in Music Education from Boston's Berklee College of Music, an M.A. from the University of Miami in Traditional Performance and an M.A. in Educational Administration from CSULA. He is also a professional trombonist, and has performed in numerous motion picture, television, and recording sessions promises to be a great year for the Samohi Jazz Bands. The season began on January 10th with a Guest Artist Concert featuring renowned trumpet player Wayne Bergeron. This Spring, Jazz Band 1 will travel to Boston to compete at the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival, the largest high school jazz festival in the world. SAMOHI was also recently informed that senior Steven Gordon has been selected as the pianist for the Grammy High School Jazz Band, made up of the twenty finest high school musicians in the nation. Steven will be performing at the Grammy after-party and jazz clubs in the L.A. area. 10 SAMO Band: All That and JAZZ! SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS

19 R G C Coda 2010 The California Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) was founded in 1975 for the purpose of enriching school orchestra programs. CODA Honor Orchestras are designed to provide an opportunity for talented musicians throughout California to perform challenging literature as a part of a select concert ensemble, gain experience that they can share with their own school groups, and realize the inherent value in working with peers from other areas. All told, Samohi sent 71 musicians to take part in this year s String and Symphony Orchestras, by far the largest contingent from a single high school.
