V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R Greetings to all of you in Area 7! My name is Darcy Reich and I am your new Chair for Area 7. As I ve been pondering the beginning of my term of office and with Thanksgiving on the horizon, one thing that keeps coming to mind is gratitude. My first thanks go out to Sandy Mullaney, my predecessor. She has been a wonderful mentor to me and to so many others in our Area. Sandy will continue on the Area 7 Board as Past Chair for the next two years, so her work isn t quite over yet. Her focus will be the grant and scholarship programs, as well as continuing the wonderful work she has done with the service projects at all of our events. I also want to thank the rest of the Area 7 board for all of the work they provide for the Area. The main reason I was compelled to serve as Chair was because of the teamwork I have witnessed and the friendships I have made over the years at Area 7 events. Some of you may recall Bill Alexander s Christmas in September workshops in the 1970s and 1980s. Others will remember the Mid-Winter reading sessions and workshops held at North Heights Lutheran Church in the Twin Cities some years ago. Those were wonderful ways for me, as a new ringer and director, to network with others in order to hear new music, gather new ideas and carry my enthusiasm back to my own choirs. The Area 7 board with the leadership of Alanna Teragawa, our Events Coordinator, has continued that fine tradition by offering a number of opportunities for both ringers and directors. Check out the Area 7 website for a list of events for I m especially excited about the addition of a second Anthornis event taking place on Nov. 7-8 at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND under the direction of Michael Glasgow, our original Anthornis conductor. I encourage you to seek out others in your community or surrounding area to talk shop. Meet occasionally for coffee during the weekend or after work. Maybe breakfast before heading out for your day would fit into your schedule. Even a phone call can be an easy and quick way to touch base with one another. Every director or choir may not be able to attend events far from home, but the connections you make with others near you are also very valuable. Did you know grants are available for small, local events? The Twin Ports festival in Duluth and the Eau Claire Area Ring are two examples of groups who have made use of this financial assistance. It s another way to provide additional ringing experiences for your own ringers and others in your neighborhood. Information for grants is available on the Area 7 website. Our out-going Area 7 board members have made valuable contributions to our organization. Many thanks to Lori Potter, Past Chair; Judi Morton, Secretary; Bonnie Tranby, Youth Events Planner; and Pat Penn, South Dakota Sub Area Chair. Welcome to our newest board members: Karen Van Wert, Chair Elect; Deb Madel, Secretary; Michelle Finlon, Youth Events Planner; and Barbara Babs Elving, South Dakota Sub Area Chair. Please contact any of us on the board if we can assist you in your handbell endeavors. We are happy to serve all of you in Area 7! Best wishes to you throughout your ringing year!

V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R P A G E 2 Music is the social act of communication among people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest there is. -Malcolm Arnold In the past year, Area 7 has added a service component to each of our events. Partnering with local non-profit organizations and supporting the communities near our event venues has been a privilege. Our members have enthusiastically joined in to reach out with Helping Hands from Handbells to bring hope and help to our neighbors. Looking ahead, Area 7 continues its commitment to service projects for the coming year. Please check this list to see the ways we are connecting and plan to join in on these efforts: Anthornis North, Nov 7-8, 2014 Partnering with Churches United for the Homeless in Moorhead MN; receiving donations of new or gently used winter gloves, mittens, warm stocking hats, and full face masks for their Free Thrift Store. Anthornis Central, Feb 6-7, 2015 Partnering with PROP (People Reaching Out to People) to stock their food shelf with non-perishable food donations. AdventuRing, Feb 28, 2015 Partnering with Bridge for Youth to support teens who have nowhere else to go. Donations will include clothes, gift cards, hand written card of encouragement and other items. KidsRing, April 25, 2015 Kids Against Hunger food packing Young Ringers Camp, June 19-21, 2015 Creating sets of rhythm instruments to donate to low income daycares and shelters

V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R P A G E 3 Ruth Immerfall, CHIME Committee Chair Autumn greetings to all! We hope your ringing season is off to a fabulous start! The Committee for Handbells/ Handchimes in Music Education is very excited to let you know that all four of our Area 7's handbell and handchime sets were granted out for this school year!! * One set of bells is being used by the students in grades 3-8 at St. James Catholic School in Duluth, MN. * The second set of Area 7's bells are at Family of Christ Church in Chanhassen, MN. * One set of chimes are being incorporated into the music program for the students at St. John the Baptist School in Excelsior, MN. * The second set of chimes went to Milwaukee, WI to be used by the students in grades 3-8 at St. Anthony School. Please look for future articles in the Clapper Chatter telling about the experiences these groups had with the handbells and handchimes during this school year. Thank you for spreading the word about Area 7's C.H.I.M.E. grant program! Happy ringing everyone! Thank you, Area 7. This was so much fun, commented one of these life-long learners. We were truly blessed by this gift. Thanks to the Area 7 C.H.I.M.E. Grant program, these seniors at Walker Methodist Plaza (Anoka, MN) had the joy of creating music together for nine months. They met weekly to learn basic music and handchime skills under the direction of their activities director Malcolm Anderson, a talented organist and director. The group performed in several holiday programs to the delight of their fellow residents as well as children and grandchildren. -K.W. This is Synod School handbells, a group of Presbyterian ringers from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin who met at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa for Synod School. As part of our classes we rang handbells and even played for the closing worship service.

V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R P A G E 4 Mark Bloedow, Southern Wisconsin Sub-Area Chair Fall certainly is a beautiful time of transition the change of the seasons, but also the return to regular handbell rehearsals, playing for worship/events, and reaching out to others with the beauty of our ringing. It would be easy to take all of this for granted and accept it all as a regular routine. It is much more than that, and truly we recognize the importance of being grateful for our fellow ringers and the special gifts we share within our groups, community, and in Area 7. Here are a few highlights from Southern, WI: Maestro s Ringing Badgers, founded and directed by Mark Bloedow, are now officially Wisconsin s newest community handbell ensemble. Previously the group gathered in preparation for Area 7 Festivals. Regular weekly rehearsals started in September, and the group recently was gifted with their 5 th Octave of Malmark Handbells to arrive in time for their Christmas performances. In December the group will perform with Madison s Choral Arts Society Chorale, and also for Maestro Productions Madison Area Community Christmas Festival at the Middleton Performing Arts Center on December 20 & 21. Auditions remain open for new candidates and subs. For more information, please musicdirectormeb@gmail.com or visit Maestro on Facebook or The Milwaukee Handbell Ensemble, directed by Dr. John Behnke, will present their eighth Annual Christmas Bellfest on Monday, December 8, 7:30pm at Concordia University of Wisconsin, Mequon, in the Chapel of Christ Triumphant. Local church handbell choirs join MHE to perform mass and solo pieces. Christmas hymn singing, bells, and organ will be featured with Dr. John Behnke, organist. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The group is also joining the Milwaukee Children's Chorus for two Christmas performances on Saturday, December 13, 7:00 pm, at Cathedral Church of All Saints in Milwaukee, and Sunday, December 14, 3:30 pm, in the Chapel of Christ Triumphant at Concordia. More information on both events and more at Madison Area Concert Handbells, directed by Brad Schultz, also presents a Christmas Concert. Please visit for complete details when available. And Save the Date! Sinsinawa Mound Center, Sinsinawa, WI, will host a handbell festival, Bells, Bells, & More Bells! presented by Maestro Productions, Inc. on Saturday, March 7. Massed ringing, classes, and an afternoon concert are planned. More details available soon at Happy ringing to one and all! Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.

V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R P A G E 5 Douglas E. Wagner in his Scoring for English Handbells, a Practical Guide for Composers, (1986) provides us with the following insight: In handbell scoring, as with any other medium, the voicing of chords is an important consideration. Because of the unique acoustical characteristics of the handbell, the arrangement of notes in a chord can mean the difference between a mediocre and a highly successful endeavor. This very simple concept should be kept in mind: Thicker textures (notes very close together) will be most effective in the middle to upper register, while chord notes in the lower register should have more space between them. (Page 5) This is how the overtone series looks, more space between the lower notes and closer spacing between higher notes. When a chord is scored in this manner with wider spaces between lower notes and closer spaces between higher notes, the overtone series is aiding in the confirmation of the vibrations. Our ears find this pleasing. The vibrations are in sync and sounding consonant. He goes on to say,... chords with thicker textures (notes closer together) sound more effective in the upper register. Chords using the lowest bells available should have more space between the notes. A listener would find it a much easier task to differentiate individual chord tones when listening to figure 2 rather than figure 1, because of the additional space between the notes. (Pages 9-10) When scoring the above chord simply take the 3 rd of the chord in Figure 1, and move it up an octave, as in Figure 2. Please notice that this scoring replicates partial numbers 2, 3 and 5 in the given overtone series. These, along with the octave, are the overtones most audible in an overtone series. When a chord is scored replicating the arrangement of overtones in a given series it creates a pleasing sound, one where vibrations are working together rather than vying with each other. Look for music written in this manner, and score your own music in this way. Until next time, Dr. P Ona.Pinsonneault@normandale.edu November 2014

V O L U M E 2 8 I S S U E 4 N O V E M B E R P A G E 6 Bells & Bonding! The twelve members of my youth bell choir who attended YRC came to camp as individuals and left as a TEAM. They loved all the activities - horseback riding, zip line, challenge course, swimming, games, the petting zoo (they especially loved the baby bunnies!) They really enjoyed taking part in the Service Project, where we made rhythm instruments to donate to low income daycares and shelters. They thought the food was great (adults agreed too - they do a nice job with the meals). And their ringing came together in ways I had never seen at home - they had enough rehearsal time to bring their ringing to the next level, and they were very proud of themselves. One camper summed it up when she told me I'm glad I came to Camp - I love bells, and I really GET IT now. -S.M. After jumping back into the bell ringing community after 15+ years, I had heard a few things about Anthornis. I stuck my toe in and subbed for a practice but then dove in head first the next year. A bit apprehensive not sure I m good enough and will I be able to keep up with everyone?, but it was great! I loved that I got to meet new people in the choir I joined but still a few familiar faces too. I really liked the idea of 1 full day (possibly Friday evening if I wanted to do sight reading clinic) that fit into my busy family schedule easily. Everyone at the event was just like us frustrated with certain parts of the pieces we were playing or loving other aspects of the songs. With all the challenging pieces that are available to handbell choirs, I think this is just the type of event that ringers need! Fun experience while learning & exceeding our own expectations when it comes to ringing! -S.N. Want to attend an Area 7 event FREE? Read on for details 1. 17 Area 7 Wisconsin South Dakota North Dakota Minnesota Manitoba 2015 AdventuRing On a Journey Area 7 is pleased to announce the preliminary details for the 2015 AdventuRing event. This event is for ringers in 9 th through 12 th grade (and beyond), or other ages at the discretion of their conductor. The ringing repertoire has an International flavor, taking us on a musical journey through many cultures. The AdventuRing event has a dual purpose: to challenge high school aged ringers and to acquaint them with college life. College aged ringers are encouraged to attend, ring and share their experiences. High school ringers will work on challenging music and have the opportunity to learn about ringing at the college level while spending time with current college students. DATE: Saturday, February 28, 2015 Location: Gustavus Adolphus College, Bjorling Recital Hall, St. Peter, MN Clinician: Dr. Chad Winterfeldt see bio below The event will start at approx. 8:30AM and conclude with a closing concert about 4:00PM. College aged ringers are encouraged to attend as mentors and ringers. Contact the Youth Events Planner listed below for more information The repertoire list for 2015 AdventuRing is listed below. Title Composer Octaves Level Publisher Pub Code Instr I Wonder as I Wander Helman Lorenz L Just a Closer Walk with Thee Greer 3 3 Ringing Word RW8036 Clarinet Just a Closer Walk with Thee Greer Ringing Word RW8211 Clarinet Jubilant Procession McFadden AGEHR AG36033 Sherekea Usafari Moklebust Choristers Guild CGB514 Percussion HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EVENT: 1. Purchase enough copies for your choir of each of the pieces listed above. *Note that Just a Closer Walk with Thee is available in either a 3 octave version or 3 5 octave version. 2. Rehearse these pieces throughout the year, so your ringers are familiar with the pieces before arriving. 3. It is not necessary for your whole choir to attend. Even though this is a great group bonding experience, you are welcome to register with a less than full choir. SERVICE PROJECT: All Area 7 Events include a Service Project of some kind, to give back to our community. The AdventuRing Service Project will involve collecting donations for Bridge for Youth in Minneapolis. SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of scholarships are available for this event. More information will follow. 18 AdventuRing Clinician Dr. Chad Winterfeldt is Cantor of Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. In this role, he is responsible for all music in the chapel, as performer, teacher, administrator, and scholar. Since 2006, he has been on the music faculty at Gustavus as Director of Handbells. He leads two full ensembles (5 octaves bells and 4 octaves chimes) and one small group (4 8 ringers) that devotes itself to practicing extended techniques. Each ensemble participates regularly in Daily Sabbath services in Christ Chapel, performing anthems and leading liturgical music. The Christ Chapel Ringers perform each year in the Christmas in Christ Chapel festival, and in the spring all handbell ensembles present a concert and short regional tour. The handbell ensembles engage in community outreach through performances at hospitals, churches and unusual locations on the Gustavus campus. Dr. Winterfeldt has directed handbell ensembles since 1994, when he began working with a group of dedicated ringers using a 2 octave set in Houston, Texas. He is a member of Handbell Musicians of America. A lifelong church musician, he has served Lutheran churches in Minnesota, Connecticut, Texas and Nebraska. In 2004 he earned his doctorate in organ performance from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He is married to Beth, a professional pianist and teacher; together they raise three children, Quentin, Eleanor, and Cecily. When he can, he likes to read, backpack, bicycle, and travel.
