1 Special Anniversary Bell Blitz February 2015 Always friendly personalized service! In This Issue Greetings Singing Bell Ideas Tip for directors Upcoming Events 20 th Anniversary Sale Web page Ave NW Edmonton, Alberta T6J6V BELL (780) Greetings All! At Handbells etc. we are excited to be celebrating our 20 th anniversary! It has been exciting for us to see handbell ringing advance in Canada. Can you believe how much bell ringing has changed? Our church handbell choirs are ringing better than ever! We have more bell choirs in schools and seniors centers. We have more community choirs. Bell ringers are now considered to be real musicians! Audiences are impressed with the diversity of handbells. Bells are not only ringing sacred and original music but also rock and roll and themes from movies. Bell choirs are playing national anthems at sports events and at High Tea at the Lieutenant Governor s!!! Twenty years ago, who would think we would be going the Home Depot to buy dowel so we could get our bells to sing! We are excited to offer our biggest music sale ever! For our 20 th anniversary, we have chosen 20 excellent titles for special sale prices. We thank you for your continued enthusiasm and commitment to advancing the art of handbell ringing in Canada and your support to Handbells etc. We continue to be excited and passionate about handbell ringing and will continue to work hard to meet your handbell needs. Thanks! Susan Galloway and Camille Ream Us! Does Your Bell Choir Need a Coaching Session? Both Susan and Camille have received their Handbell Musicians of American Level 2 Director s Certification. They have just returned from working with Dr. William Payn at the Master Conducting Class hosted by the Handbell Musicians of America. If you are looking for a clinician/director to coach your ringers, give us a call! We are interested in coming to your rehearsal to work with your choir (fees to be discussed). We will get both ringers and directors energized and enthusiastic about ringing!
2 Singing Bell Ideas Are you looking for some creative ideas to add to your worship services or your concerts? Something easy something to WOW your listener yet be meaningful? Something that will work in schools, churches and community settings? You will need some dowels, some bells and some singers! You can even have the singers do the singing bell technique. You will need to practice it because if you go too fast, then it chatters, if you go to slow, it doesn t sing, if you press inconsistently, it squeals. The pressure of the dowel on the bell and the speed of it needs to be JUST RIGHT. Start singing the bells (HINT: Don t rush the vocal singing - wait until you hear all the bells), then start the singing and see what happens! Dona Nobis Amazing Grace How Can I Keep from Singing F3 G3 A3 C4 F4 G4 A4 C5 F5 G3 A3 B3 D4 G4 A4 B4 D5 G5 F3 G3 A3 C4 F4 G4 A4 C5 F5 If you don t have fourth octave, just have the lowest pitch as the tonic. Singing bell pitches can be doubled on a borrowed set of bells. Ringers/singers can surround the audience or congregation the sound will surround the listener. Ringer/singers can even be sitting in the pews so the listener hears the sound coming from somewhere. I encourage you to take a look at some of the music already in your handbell library to see which pieces you might be able to use this technique. We can offer you some suggestions if you like! Give us a call! Servicing, Polishing and Maintenance Want your bells or chimes serviced? Handbells etc. is happy to do this for you.imagine how wonderful it would be to be able ring polished and serviced handbells at your upcoming Spring Concerts! Please give us a call and we can give you a quote! We will be in Calgary in April for a few days - book a time to bring your troubled bells in for a tune up! Tip for Conductors Handbells etc challenges all directors to start to memorize your music! This will allow you to know the score inside and out, smile at your ringers and focus on making music instead of where you are in the score! If this is a new idea to you, start by directing one of your concert or worship pieces from memory. You will be surprised at how well your ringers perform!
