It is part of the requirements for Handbell Musicians of America Level 1 Certification; those seeking certification should plan to attend, though non- certificationseeking people are welcome to attend the class, too! (Those seeking certification who wish to attempt to "test out" of Basic Music Theory may attend the third session only.) Please note that this course is fast-paced and requires participants to possess a working knowledge of basic music reading (i.e., lines and spaces in treble and bass clef, sharps and flats, time signatures, etc.). Pre-registration is required. For more information, including course syllabus and content, please visit handbellmusicians.org/music+resources/handbell-musician-certification. Theory Track: Basic Theory Certification I Theory Track: Basic Theory Certification II Michael Glasgow Michael Glasgow Early Bird Session: Personalities and Dealing with Conflict Performing groups realize their goals in social settings where personalities can often become challenging and can keep groups from reaching their potential. This class explores personality types and ways of working with interpersonal conflict that can arise within groups.
7 Session 1: How to Deal with Negative Self-Talk (for Directors and for Ringers) This class focuses on the debilitating habit of negative self-talk and how this can prevent us from maximizing our talents. Session 2: Choice A: Ringing to a Higher Level Everyone wants to improve their skill and confidence in ringing. This class explores ways to build on current skills, realistically assess current levels of ability, and develop strategies to improve overall ringing skill and musicality. Session 2: Choice B: Where Does a New Director Start? Ann Y. Schmidt In this class we will try to answer all the questions that new directors have before and following their first rehearsal. How do I get enough ringers? What do I do if someone doesn t show up? How do I know how to assign what bell to what person? Where can I get music? Since this will be inter-active, come with your own questions. We will try to solve them! Session 3: Choice A: Mindfulness Ringing and Conducting Mindfulness psychology is currently a technique that has been utilized successfully in a myriad of areas, and offers unique applications for ringers and conductors. Learn about mindfulness and how these techniques can provide you with a more rewarding and fulfilling ringing/conducting experience. Session 3: Choice B: Bass Bell Techniques Lynn Bogovich All bass bells are not created equal. This class will concentrate on mallets, weights, and how not to injure yourself and the bells in the process of ringing. Saturday 7 Session 4: Reading Session Theory Track: Basic Theory Certification III Michael Glasgow Session 5: Choice A: Approaching Rehearsals from a Whole to Part Perspective (Primarily for conductors) This session is designed to re-think our rehearsal strategies to maximize musicality and sensitivity in the performance of handbell music. Session 5: Choice B: Basic Ringing Skills and Techniques Ann Y. Schmidt There are so many techniques for bell ringers that are new to anyone who reads music. The martellato and thumb damp are peculiar to bell ringers, as are many of the techniques employed in English handbell music. Come ready to learn how to play the techniques musically, so that they add beauty to the musical integrity. Session 6: Choice A: Teaching Strategies for Rehearsals Every conductor longs for more rehearsal time with all members present. The reality is we are usually working with little time and sporadic attendance. This class discusses ways to maximize rehearsal time and explores strategies to keep ringers focused and motivated. Tips for maximizing learning are also discussed. Session 6: Choice B: Beginning Conducting for New Directors Ann Y. Schmidt You have been singing, marching in bands, playing an instrument for years. Can you direct? Not until you learn the basics. We will explore conducting patterns that beginning directors will need to elicit a musical result from a choir.
8 Session 7: Choice A: Performance Anxiety Many musicians, in fact most, cope with performance anxiety to some degree. This class explores the reasons for performance anxiety and offers ideas and suggestions to alleviate anxiety and enjoy the opportunity to share our music in public settings. Session 7: Choice B: High Bell Techniques Debbie Henning Participants will learn and practice using high bell techniques in a traditional way. This includes using shelley and four-in-hand to double up bells in order to cover more bells. When applied, these techniques will help make tricky passages less difficult. We will also examine scores to determine how to best use these skills. Bring your gloves and be amazed at how well you will be able to handle multiple bells! 8 Where to Stay HOTEL: Fredericksburg Hospitality House and Conference Center at Central Park Fredericksburg Hospitality House and Conference Center 2801 Plank Rd, Central Park, Fredericksburg, VA Reservations must be made on your own by calling Special seminar rate is $89 (plus tax) Reservations should be received by the Hotel by August 15, Reservations received after that date will be accepted on a space and rate available basis.
