In short order, he composed the score for the cult film The Return of Captain Invincible, the admittedly woeful comedy Stanley - Every Home Should Have One, the under-appreciated story of Berlei bras in Australia, Undercover, John Duigan's One Night Stand, and Silver City. The score for Silver City is one of Motzing's better ones, and he manages to match up in the underscore to the gentle melancholy of the Henryk Wars song, sung by Hanka Ordonòwna, which appears in the body of the film, and turns up over the end credits. During his career as a professional trombonist Bill performed with Kai Winding Septet, Jon Eardley Quintet, Gerry Mulligan Big Band,Bill Russo Big Band, Sal Salvador Big Band, Eastman-Rochester Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony. His diverse career has also included being the sound designer for Blood,Sweat and Tears for three years. In the classical arena Bill has conducted major symphony orchestras including the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras. In Europe he has conducted the BBC Radio Orchestra,the Irish Radio/Television Concert Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Budapest Opera Orchestra and the Babelsberg Film Studio Orchestra in Berlin. Bill has composed, arranged, produced and conducted stage productions including Academy Award presentations and over 100 albums and CDs in the USA, Australia and Europe. As a composer/arranger his film credits include The Quiet American, Soul Food and the Simpsons. In Australia he is well represented via filmscores and television series including Mother and Son, Come in Spinner, Brides of Christ and Young Einstein. He currently teaches theory, arranging, modern jazz history, improvisation and ensembles at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Bill continues to perform his works regularly in Sydney and inspires all musicians he comes in contact with. 3 The theme song for the film, which was composed by Henryk Wars, with the title version sung by the late Hanka Ordonówna. It is something of a Polish classic. As neither of these two have much further to do with Australian films, anyone interested in their careers can pursue them via their wikis. Henryk Wars, a Polish turned American composer, has a relatively detailed wiki here, while Hanka Ordonòwna has a much shorter wiki here. Most spellings of her name place the accent as Ordonówna, but the film insists on the spelling used in this listing. There are many fan sites and pages dedicated to Ordonówna memory, as for example here, with links to her songs. Incidentally, while the film's credits attribute the song's lyrics to M. Oldlen, that site attributes them to Polish poet Julian Tuwim. That apparent contradiction is resolved by heading off to Tuwim's wiki listing here, where it is revealed that he wrote under the pseudonym Oldlen when crafting song lyrics. The song originally featured in the 1933 film Szpieg w masce/a Spy in the Mask, and it can be found on YouTube here - a number of other songs performed by her can also be found on the site. The song is also performed in the film by Teresa Haremza, during a dance sequence in the hostel, though the small band working behind her aren't identified, except as Curly - they also do a musical number, and are on hand smiling broadly when the crowd turns their performance of the then Australian national anthem God Save the King into a chance to sing the Polish national anthem.
